WVBA SPRING SKILL WORKOUTS
BEGIN APRIL 1ST
 
WVBA spring skill workouts will begin this coming Monday, April 1 from 6:30-8pm at the Lane Community College gym.  We will have twelve workouts between April 1st and May 16th.  A complete list of workouts can be found on the news page at the left hand menu.  Workouts are included in the spring and summer team fees, for other girls 7th grade-high school the cost is $165 for all twelve sessions or $85 for six sessions.  Individual session $20.  If you need any further information text to 541-521-6729 or send an email to :  speedcats1@aol.com.
 
 These workouts will concentrate on individual development and stress shooting, ball handling, footwork, variety of offensive movements and defense.  These sessions will prepare a player for the upcoming spring and summer seasons plus additional prepare them for the winter high school season.
 
 
EMERALD CITY SUMMER CLASSIC
SCHEDULED FOR JULY 26-28, 2013
 
The WVBA's semi-annual summer tournament has been scheduled for July 26-28, 2013.   There will be at least two divisions, all-star and elite.  Additional information along with registration pages will be available online soon.  The tournament entry fee is the most reasonable in the Northwest at $595. This tournament will be NCAA Certified and allow all NCAA & NAIA coaches to attend.  It also has been in the past a viable alternative to Oregon, Washington and Idaho coaches to cut down on summer expenses.  No need to travel to Southern California after a long month.  We will have a large contingent of college coaches in attendance. Morris, Foust & Paschal Lead Mazama
to 4A State Title; Wright Helps Willamette Win 5A State Title 
 
Megan Morris scored 13 pts and grabbed 5 rebounds and was selected 1st team All-Tournament to help Mazama HS win their first 4A State Girls basketball title.  Morris was helped by WVBA Selects Black teammate Karena Foust who scored 9 pts and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Also playing in the game WVBA Selects Silver player Mercedez Paschall and former WVBA Selects player Hannah Reynolds who was also selected to the 1st team All-Tournament squad.  Congratulations girls!
 
Carmen Wright, WVBA Selects Silver player whose high school career has been troubled by two knee injuries helped Willamette HS upset # 1 Springfield HS in the 5A State title game.  Wright's team defeated several former WVBA Selects players, Tennessee bound Mercedes Russell, Niki Duncan, Ashley Richey and Chloe Cummins.  SELECTED PREP ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
 
Two WVBA Selects Black players from last summer's team have been selected as TV station KMTR's prep athletes of the week this month.  January 10th selection was Sheldon senior Leah Nicklason and January 17th's selection was Springfield senior Niki Duncan.  I've posted links below so you can see the video footage about these great student athletes!  Congratulations Leah & Niki!!!!

Lane Stars Earn Honors
 
Kersey Wilcox and Megan Shields, both former WVBA Selects, earned some special honors over the holiday weekend for the undefeated Lane CC Titans.  Kersey Wilcox (Mountain View HS/Lane CC) was named MVP of the Chemeketa Holiday Classic in Salem.  Kersey averaged 18.4 pts , 9.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 steals for the tournament.  She was also today named NWAACC Player of the Week for her performance.  Megan Shields (Sherwood HS/Lane CC) was also named All-Tournament, as she had another outstanding performance including in the semi-final win against Columbia Basin College.  She had triple-double, 17 pts, 10 rebounds and a school record 11 blocks.  Megan on holds career records for blocks in individual game, single season and career, even though she has 18 more games in her sophomore season.  This was the fourth consecutive pre-season tournament that Megan has earned All-Tournament or MVP honors this season.

Megan Shields (Sherwood HS) had 19 pts & 9 rebs, and was named MVP of the Pierce Holiday Tourament, in Lane CC's 72-68 win over Clackamas CC in the championship game, Kersey Wilcox (Mountain View HS) had 16 pts was also named All-Tournament team, Tori Mahaffie (Willamette HS) had 11 pts & 9 reb for Lane CC. . . . . Sheldon HS Pair Commit
 
Former 2-yr WVBA Selects Silver teammates & Sheldon HS teammates, Hannah Rodrigues and Ashley Land have committed for the 2013-2014 college season.  Rodrigues has committed to Division II power Seattle Pacific University and Land has committed to NAIA Division I power Vanguard University (CA.).  These two, along with Mercedes Russell make three early commitments from Coach Kenya Wilkins' WVBA Selects Silver team from 2010-2011.  This is the second season in a row that we have had early signees in the November signing period.  Congrats Hannah & Ashley!!!  As I tweeted last week, after the Russell commitment, we'd have more early commitments and hopefully we'll have one or two more!
 
 
Russell Chooses Tennessee
 
 Mercedes Russell, former WVBA Selects star and two-time Oregon 5A Player of the Year chose University of Tennessee to play her collegiate basketball.  Russell, also a two-time USA National team star and the #1 ranked player in the class of 2013 by ESPN, had whittled her choices to University of Louisville and University of Tennessee but chose the Volunteers in the end.  Russell played for Coach Kenya Wilkins' WVBA Selects Silver team during her freshman and sophomore years.  Good Luck Mercedes we're all proud of your accomplishments!!
 
This will mark the second consecutive season a former WVBA Selects player will sign in the early signing period.  Last season, Hanna Mack (Eastern Washington Univ.) and Ellen Ferrenburg (Northwest Nazarene Univ.) signed early.  A couple additional signings could happen next month for Selects players.

Former WVBA Star Helps Lead USA to
FIBA World U-17 Championship
 
Mercedes Russell (Springfield HS), who played two seasons with Coach Wilkins WVBA Selects Silver team, scored 8 pts and pulled down 4 rebounds in the US U-17 National team's 75-62 win.  Russell was also a member of last year's U-16 World Championship team.  Russell, ranked #1 in the ESPN Class of 2013 rankings will return to Springfield HS to try and lead her team to a third consecutive OSAA Class 5A state title.  Congratulations on another great showing in the World Championships!
