WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!
We are pleased to introduce you to programs offered under the wings of the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center and the Special Diabetes Program. The Special Diabetes Program has various programs such as the Hopi Tobacco Education and Prevention Project, Health Activities Program and the Hopi Wellness Center. Information contained in the website will introduce you to various programs offered by the programs as well as dates for upcoming events and activities. Programs highlighted are housed in Kykotsmovi, Arizona off highway 264 near mile post 279.5,please sign our guest book.
HEALTH ACTIVITIES PROGRAM: The health activities department is actively involved in teaching healthy behaviors at a young age. Behavior that involves physical activity and nutrition, in other words a healthy lifestyle change. Due to the rise in obesity rates and diabetes among youth not only here on the Hopi reservation, but across the United States we are continually looking to educate the youth with programs like the Hopi gardening project which involves the local elementary schools in planting a garden. Also getting involved with local elementary schools in promoting and rewarding youth that participate in activities that the department sets up in conjuction with the school administrators.
HOPI SPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM : The Hopi Special Diabetes Program actively promotes a healthy lifestyle for the residents and non-residents of the Hopi reservation, through presentations done in communities, schools, and villages. The outreach presentations the program currently offers are: 100 mile club, The Hopi Tribal Employee Wellness Program, Diabetes Awareness Conference, Diabetes Awareness Youth Camp,Youth in Motion, providing healthy cooking demonstrations and helping those individuals that are just beginning to exercise. THE HOPI TRIBE TOBACCO EDUCATION AND PREVENTION PROJECT: The Hopi Tobacco Education and Prevention Program provides prevention education to all the local schools on the Hopi Reservation. There are 8 elementary schools and one High School on the Hopi reservation. The tobacco education and prevention program provides commercial tobacco prevention to the community and also provides cessation information to adults who want to quit smoking. The tobacco education and prevention program is also involved with the special diabetes program. The program also does presentations on the dangers of commercial tobacco, and the benefits of traditional tobacco.
HOPI WELLNESS CENTER : The Hopi Wellness Center has been in operation since May 5, 2005. The Hopi Wellness Center offers cardio equipment (4 elliptical machines, 4 recumbant bikes, and 7 treadmills), PRECOR cable strength training equipment, free weights, outdoor trails (2mile, 5k, and 10k), and the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center for basketball, volleyball and any other physical activities. The Hopi Wellness Center is open to individuals 12 years and older, the center also offers a daycare center which is free to the people that visit the center for their workouts. The Hopi Wellness Center is staffed by employees that have been certified in various aspects of the health and fitness industry. Group fitness classes are also offered monthly during the lunch hour and in the evening.
