From the MIAA
Spalding controls the ball and John Carroll, 30-19

10/31/2009

Shelly White rushed for two touchdowns in Spalding's 30-19 win over John Carroll, clinching a place in the MIAA B Conference Championship Game for the Cavaliers.

Archbishop Spalding found a way to slow streaking John Carroll and its prolific quarterback Stephen St. Clair, last night in Bel Air, and the Cavalier offensive got back on track in a 30-19 MIAA B Conference victory over the Patriots.
The Spalding win clinched a trip to the MIAA B Conference Championship Game for coach Mike Whittles' team, while ending John Carroll's title hopes. After closing its regular season next Friday at home against St. John's Catholic Prep, Spalding will get a rematch with Boys' Latin, which humbled the Cavaliers, 20-0, last week, in the title game at Mount St. Joseph (Nov. 14 - 1:00 p.m.)

St. Clair, who has been racking up all-purpose yards with the best in the state, had John Carroll (6-3, 5-3) on a five game winning streak and he did his best to extend that last night as he rushed for two scores and threw for another to stake the Patriots to a 19-17 halftime lead. Spalding, however, got its running game in gear in the second half and limited John Carroll to just three possessions as it controlled the ball for more than 19 of the game's final 24 minutes.

Spalding moved in front, 20-19, on a 32 yard field goal by Wade Korvin, who had three field goals in the contest. Shelly White added his second rushing touchdown of the night, on a four yard fourth quarter run, and Korvin capped the scoring with another 32 yard field goal.

St. Clair was paid so much attention by the Spalding defense that he probably now knows them all on a first name basis. They pursued him relentlessly and limited him to a season-low 24 yards rushing and intercepted two of his passes. Despite this, he found a way to be productive early.

St. Clair scored the game's first touchdown, on a two yard first quarter run and he connected with Brian Butler for a 78 yard touchdown toss, later in the period. St. Clair also added a one yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

J.D. Izon got Spalding's offense rolling with a liberating 40 yard TD sprint in the first quarter. The Cavaliers, usually an explosive group, were frustrated by last week's shutout at BL and came in determined to bounce back. Izon led that effort with 107 yards on the ground.

White's first touchdown of the night came on a 10 yard run, early in the third quarter, and Korvin booted a 39 yard field goal just before the half.

John Carroll will look to end its season on a high note when it travels to Archbishop Curley next Friday.

Spalding and Boys' Latin played in the first MIAA B Conference Game in 2005. That year Boys' Latin won the regular season meeting and came in as the favorite, but the Cavaliers rolled to a big win. Spalding would return to defeat Cardinal Gibbons in the 2006 championship game and then made a third consecutive trip in 2007, falling to St. Mary's. Last year, St. Mary's repeated as champion, as it defeated St. Paul's in the title game.
