From the MIAA
by Derek ToneyMany Baltimore Ravens’ die-hard fans have been worrying about the defensive unit’s uncharacteristic showing in the first few weeks of the National Football League season. There’s no consternation about defense around the Boys’ Latin School. Stealing a page from the Ravens’ playbook of a few years ago, the Lakers used a smothering defense along with a smash-mouth run attack to hammer Archbishop Spalding, 20-0, in a battle of MIAA B Conference unbeatens Friday afternoon on Lake Avenue. Now the lone unbeaten remaining in the MIAA, Boys’ Latin (8-0, 7-0 B) pretty much secured itself a spot in the conference title game Nov. 14 at Mount St. Joseph. Senior running back Patrick Steele rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns for the Lakers , who won their ninth consecutive contest, dating bak to last season. Mike Kantz, Joey Weidner and Michael Turner each recorded an interception as Boys’ Latin posted its first shutout since week two of the 2007 campaign. “The players win games, but we get them in the right position,” said Boys’ Latin coach Richie Schell. “We had them in the right position before last year and we didn’t make the plays. We’ve made a committed effort to get stronger and we have some good players.” “There were no weak links, everybody just did their job,” said Lakers’ senior linebacker Garrett Steele, who is Patrick's brother. “The first guy hold them, the second guy take him down. Take out legs, stripped the ball, whatever we could to get their offense off the field.” Led by Garrett Steele (seven tackles), Boys’ Latin practically brought a Cavalier offensive unit, averaging nearly 37 points a game, to a grinding halt. Spalding (7-1, 6-1) managed 137 yards as K.K. Smith, the Cavaliers’ leading rusher and main offensive catalyst, finished with a tough 66 yards on 14 carries. Steele said the Lakers moved nose guard Brian Rubenstein over Spalding’s offensive guard to negate any back-side runs. The Cavaliers only had three runs of 10 yards or more and finished with six first downs. Boys’ Latin once again relied on Patrick Steele to wear down the opposing defense. He had 96 yards in the second half, including a 15-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. The Lakers were successfully able to establish the pass to set up their running game. Boys’ Latin threw for 71 yards in the game’s opening drive including a 42-yard completion from senior Kevin O’Neill (12-of-19, 167 yards) to Turner (seven receptions for 112 yards), leading to a one-yard score by Steele. Spalding’s first drive ended with a fumble and Kantz recovering. The Lakers extended their advantage to 13-0 with a five-play, 72-yard drive late in the opening half, capped by Steele’s two-yard score with 1:58 left. The drive started with O’Neill completing passes of 33 and 22 yards to Turner and Jack Durkee, respectively. Spalding made its best assault against the Lakers’ defense on the ensuing possession, reaching Boys’ Latin’s 16-yard line, but Smith was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-three. The frustration continued for the Cavaliers at the start of the second half as Kantz intercepted Donnie Abey. The Lakers’ defense produced its fourth turnover with Weidner’s interception in the fourth quarter. Four plays later, Steele barreled his way into the end zone for the game’s final touchdown, with 8:57 to play. “We didn’t seem to be able to get into sync, but Boys’ Latin kept us from doing that,” said Spalding coach Mike Whittles, who got interceptions from Smith and Julian Washington. “We haven’t played a perfect game.” For the first time since 1963, Boys’ Latin is undefeated through its first eight games. The Lakers have a road trip to Archbishop Curley next weekend before closing the regular season with archrival St. Paul’s in Brooklandville on Nov. 6. “We never been this close to a championship,” said Garrett Steele, whose team lost to Spalding in the 2005 title game at Johnny Unitas Stadium. “No one knows how to feel, but we’re not going to let up.” Boys' Latin 20, Archbishop Spalding 0 AS - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 BL - 6 - 7 - 0 - 7 - 20 BL-Steele 1 run (kick failed) BL-Steele 2 run (Keenan kick) BL-Steele 15 run (Keenan kick) |
