From the MIAA
A wet night did not dampen homecoming festivities at Archbishop Spalding, as the Cavaliers celebrated the opening of their new stadium in grand fashion, with five different players scoring touchdowns in a 36-0 MIAA B Conference win over St. Frances, Friday evening. The victory allowed Spalding to improve to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in the league. The No. 25 team in the state now prepares for a Friday afternoon visit to Boys' Latin (3:45 p.m.) to battle a Laker squad which is also unbeaten. The Cavalier defense forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and senior linebacker Brian Cooper recovered to set up Spalding's first score of the game, a 15 yard run by Taylor Schulden. Following a three and out for St. Frances (2-5, 2-4), Spalding took over at the Panther 40 yard line and needed just two plays to get back in the end zone. Junior K.K. Smith ripped off 35 yards on the first play and then scored on a run from the five yard line. Smith, who is putting together an All-Metro caliber season, finished with 121 yards on 10 carries. Spalding took a 19-0 lead to the half, following a two yard touchdown run by Shelley White, in the second quarter. The Cavs then tacked on 17 points in the third quarter to complete their scoring. Junior J.D. Izon made the most of his only carry of the evening, as he raced 45 yards for a third quarter score. Junior quarterback Donnie Abey added a four yard touchdown pass to senior Kyle Edwards, and Wade Korvin booted a 36 yard field goal. St. Frances, which opened the season in a pro style offense designed to make big plays in the passing game, surprised Spalding by converting to a single wing in order to compensate for numerous key injuries on the squad. The Cavaliers, however, adjusted to all of the misdirection and limited the Panthers to just five yards of total offense in the opening quarter. Junior linebacker Scott Saine led the team with 10 tackles, followed by junior linebacker Zach Waller, sophomore cornerback Jeremiah Johnson, senior defensive tackle Terrell Johnson and Cooper, all with five tackles. Sophomore linebacker Steve Manders also had a fumble recovery in the third quarter. "The offensive line was outstanding," said Spalding head coach Mike Whittles. "Matt Wicklein, Justin Klymczyk, Nick Allen, Chris Neutzling, Luke Caldwell, Mike Blimmel and Eric Garland deserve a lot of credit for their performance."
