MIAA Article Spalding 42 - Curley 15
Spalding remains undefeated with a 42-15 win over Curley.

10/10/2009

Trailing 8-7 entering the second quarter, Archbishop Spalding outscored visiting Archbishop Curley 21-7 in the quarter and charged forward from there, as they defeated the Friars, 42-15, in a MIAA B Conference football game, Friday night at Spalding, to remain undefeated.
K’Vaunte Smith put Spalding (6-0, 5-0) on the board first, as he busted loose for a 64 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game, but Curley answered with a defensive strip and a 80 yard fumble return for a touchdown. The Friars also added a two-point conversion and led, 8-7, at the end of one quarter.

Spalding moved in front in the second quarter on a pair Donnie Abey touchdown passes, as he connected with Chris Piccirilli, for 52 yards, and Chad Wilkerson, for 25 yards. Curley battled back within one score with 13 yard touchdown pass from Vinny Vendetti to Gary Wade, but Spalding broke things open with a big kick return.

Junior J.D.Izon, who rushed for 40 yards on four carries, returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a Spalding touchdown, building the lead to 28-15 at the break.

Smith added another TD early in the third quarter, when he scored on a 48 yard run. Sophomore Steven Manders completed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a two yard run.

On the night, Abey completed 7-of-8 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Scott Sharik had two receptions for 22 yards as Spalding rushed for 269 yards and passed for 154 yards.

Defensively, linebackers Brian Cooper, Scott Saine and Zach Waller played very well against the Curley running attack, while senior defensive tackle Terrell Johnson and sophomore Malik Johnson battled to stop the inside game. Curley had 150 yards rushing for the game and 116 yards passing.

Both teams will be celebrating Homecoming next week, as Curley (2-5, 2-3) welcomes St. Mary's to East Baltimore and Spalding will host St. Frances on Friday night. Adding to the festivities for the Cavaliers, they will play their first game in their new stadium with its new synthetic turf field.
