Frida Sigurdardottir, Cristina Payne named NAIA Volleyball All-Americans

Wednesday, December 6, 2006
By Michael MacEachern
Sports Information Director

OLATHE, Kan. – Savannah College of Art and Design’s Frida Sigurdardottir and Cristina Payne were both named to the 2006 NAIA Volleyball All-America team. Sigurdardottir was a second-team selection while Payne was tabbed to the third team.

Sigurdardottir, a 6-foot-0 senior middle hitter from Reykjavik, Iceland, and Payne, a 5-11 outside hitter/middle blocker from Seattle, Wash., helped the Bees to a 26-13 overall record, to a No. 21 national ranking, to their third consecutive Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Tournament titles and to their third consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championship.

“Frida and Cristina have both had outstanding years and are definitely two of the NAIA’s premier players,” said three-time NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year Glenn Cox. “I am proud of both of them for the honors they have earned.”

Sigurdardottir, who was named the all-conference and all-region teams for the second consecutive time, led SCAD with a .263 hitting percentage and 165 total blocks — 38 assist, 127 solo — as she was named the Player of the Year in the Florida Sun and NAIA Region XIV. Her 1.22 blocks per game average is 21st best in the NAIA and contributed to the Bees being ranked 15th as a team in that category (2.92). She was second on the squad with 395 kills (2.93 kpg) and fourth with 257 digs (1.90 dpg).

Payne, who was named to the all-conference and all-region teams for the third consecutive season, led the Bees with 424 kills (3.53 kpg), 339digs (2.83 dpg) and 74 service aces. Her 0.62 service aces per game average is ranked 17th best in the NAIA. Payne, who set the college’s five-game kill record with 34 earlier this season against Biola University, holds the college’s all-time marks in kills (1,302) and service aces (252).

Sigurdardottir and Payne are the college’s first volleyball players named to an All-America team since the Bees rejoined the NAIA in 2003.

Julie Oleson is Rankend No 13 in The Nation

LIMESTONE VOLLEYBALL LEADS NCAA IN DIGS PER GAME

In the most recent statistics released by the NCAA, Limestone College is No. 1 in the nation in digs per game among Division II schools, as the Lady Saints are averaging nearly 24 digs each contest. Other CVAC schools listed high in digs are Converse at No. 6, Anderson at No. 8 and St. Andrews at No. 14.

Julie Oleson (Seattle, Wash.) leads the Limestone defense, averaging 6.3 digs per game and is ranked No. 13 in the nation in the same category. She is getting a lot of help from Alison Hamilton (Purcellville, Va.), Chelsea Anthony (Pickens, S.C.), Courtney Taotoai (Norwalk, Calif.) and Amber Wise (Brownsville, Texas) who are all averaging over three digs per game.

Limestone head coach Tim Loesch commented, “Improving our team defense is a goal we talked about during pre-season and the young ladies have worked hard at it so far this year. We have had good blocking, which helps our diggers. Everyone else is playing disciplined defense behind the blockers, taking care of their areas of responsibility. In addition to good positioning and the techniques we use for digging, I really love our determination – everyone wants to dig a ball to help the team. When we make a spectacular dig it becomes contagious, someone else wants to make an even better play.”

Volleyball Finishes 6th at MIT Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After finishing 1-1 on the first day of the MIT Invitational, Wellesley Volleyball entered the second day in the Silver bracket, hoping to earn a fifth-place in one of the New England’s strongest Division III tournaments.  A 3-1 win over Colby College advanced them to the Silver bracket finals, but they fell to conference rival Springfield, 3-2.  The Blue finished in 6th place in the 14-team tournament.

Wellesley relied on a strong middle attack in both Silver bracket matches, with Laura Ackerman and Tracy Waldman accounting for a total of 27 and 29 kills, respectively.  Waldman also led all players with 10 blocks.  Outside hitters Jessica Duff and Robina Verbeek tallied 21 and 15 kills each to help the Blue offense.  Wellesley’s defense was anchored on the day by Emily Peters (44 digs), Naomi Itawa (29 digs), and Sarah Boone (26 digs).  Setter Billie Briones chipped in 28 digs and distributed 93 assists in today’s matches.

Wellesley, 4-3, travels to cross-town rival Babson on Tuesday night for its fourth conference match.
