Southside Wrestling : Coach Chris Winningham as Head Coach.
Although I am new to the sport of wrestling, I am not new to the wrestling tradition at Southside High School. Our wrestling team was State Champions during 2 out of the 4 years I was at Southside. I am honored with this opportunity to lead this program. I know that the coaches that came before me set the bar very high. I will do all I can to help keep this high standard of tradition. However, this tradition does not fall solely upon me. It will take a unified team of athletes, parents, coaches, and community working together to give us the highest success. I believe we have had that in the past, and I hope it continues.
To the wrestlers: You are on the brink of what could be one of the best seasons in the history of this program. The problem is that we know that, but so do the other teams. Expect to get the best out of each wrestler you face. Also, the preparation we take prior to the season is crucial. Participating in the summer wrestling program, as well as the strength and conditioning programs, could be the edge we need. If you set the highest goals, then you must be willing to pay the highest price to reach them.

To the parents: You serve a crucial role in this upcoming season. As you know, the wrestling parent probably is asked to do more than in any other sport. There will be travel, fundraising, tournaments, and other needs throughout this season. However, I ask for something which I feel is even more important: support the team. We are going to push your kids to be unselfish for this team. Even though wrestling has a very strong individual aspect, our goal is TEAM SUCCESS. We need you, the parent, to help promote this concept as well. Coach Abernathy told me that one of the best things about this program is the parents, and I can’t tell you how important that is to a coach. I look forward to working with your kids this season. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to me. My door will always be open.
To the community: I encourage the fans to come out and support this program. The level of competition and excitement is second to none. If you are unable to support them with your attendance, please support them with our fundraising opportunities. You will be proud of these young men, who proudly represent this great school and community. They sacrifice so much to compete at the highest level. However, what should make you swell with pride is that on the front of the uniform is not the school name, or their name, but simply: Southside.
I look forward to this year and the chance to serve as your coach.
