South River Volleyball Club Annapolis Anne Arundel Maryland: FAQs

What is SRVC?

South River Volleyball Club is a group of players, parents and coaches committed to promoting the sport of volleyball through the “club” experience. It was founded by a group of parents who felt the need to offer an option to young players interested in advancing their skills and playing high school volleyball. We would like to draw players from Anne Arundel and northern Calvert counties.

What is “club” volleyball?

Club volleyball is an advanced, more competitive level of play beyond the traditional “rec” season or high school season. Most players are either playing for their high school or interested in playing for their high school so the skill set taught at a club level should match that of a sound high school team. Most high school teams have a solid number of players that continue getting better after the high school season by playing “club”. For those players that have the goal of playing in college, club ball is the best way to maximize your potential and get the most exposure to college coaches.

What does it cost?

For the 2012/2013 club season, the fees are as follows:

  • 13U - approximately $1,000
  • 14U -  approximately $1,200
  • 15U -  approximately $1,350

SRVC offers two payment options:

  1. Cash/check to be mailed to SRVC
  2. Pay online with credit card during registration (credit card fees will be added to tuition)

Who will the SRVC teams play against this year?

Club ball centers on weekend tournaments hosted by other clubs. SRVC will apply to play in at least 6 - 9 regional tournaments depending on the age group. A great resource for learning more about the tournaments is the CHRVA website, www.chrva.org. A complete listing of all clubs, tournaments, results, rules, etc., can be found here. We post all tournament schedules on our website calendar.

Where and when does SRVC practice?

SRVC practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Truxtun Park Recreation Center. Before our season begins, players will be provided their final practice schedule. The schedule will also be posted on our website.

How long does the season last?

We start practicing the first week of December and end mid to late April with the regional championships. Players will be expected to play the entire season, attend all practices and prioritize volleyball over any other Spring sport commitment.

Does SRVC have a philosophy about coaching volleyball?

Yes. Our coaches believe in aggressive, intense, focused and fun volleyball. It starts with a firm grasp of the fundamental skills of the game learned through quality instruction and player repetition. Practices should not be boring. We believe most girls have a strong desire to be really good and it’s up to us to help them maximize their potential both as a player and a teammate. Volleyball is the ultimate “team” game and no single player is bigger than the team.

Does SRVC have plans to grow?

Yes. We expect to have 13U, 14U, and 15U teams this year. In subsequent years, we will enter teams in other age groups with the goal of covering all age groups form 12u to 18u.

If there are two teams in the same age group, will the teams be equally skilled?

In an effort to provide more competitive play for more experienced players, SRVC will group the teams by experience and overall ability. The maximum number of players on a team is 9. Team placement is based on a player's tryout rating. However, if a player makes significant improvement during the season, they may be given the option to move to the more competitive team. All teams learn the same basic offense and defense which allows such transitions with minimal impact to the players and the team.
