SP Jr. Softball Team State Runner Up
In a semi-final game South Portage defeated East Jordan Tuesday, August 2nd 14-2 at the State tournament in Tecumseh.

In the championship game, South Portage faced District 9: Georgetown on Wednesday August 3rd. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and softball is no exception. South Portage lost to Georgetown 7-1. But what a run for South Portage! Good job girls!

7-8 Year Old "B" Team Takes 3rd

South Portage B defeated Dowagiac 16-13 in the second game of a double-header to take third place in a machine pitch tournament at Dowagiac Little League.

The first game of the double header was a semi-final match against Eastwood LL. South Portage B led Eastwood the first 5 innings but a big 6th inning from Eastwood was too much for South Portage. South Portage fell to Eastwood by a score of 13-8.

South Portage B now sets it sights on the D15 machine pitch tournament championship where they are 1-0 in pool play. South Portage resumes play in the D15 tournament Wednesday when they face Vicksburg at Niles FOP LL.

SP 11 Year Old Softball State Runner Up!
South Portage 11 year old softball team got some sweet revenge on District 8: West Branch Tuesday defeating West Branch 12-1 at the state tournamnet in Tecumseh. The win put South Portage just one game away from the championship game. South Portage was beat earlier in the Tounament by West Branch and had to get past St. Clair and Dowagiac to set up the grudge match.

Wednesday South Portage defeated District 9: Rockford 11-9.

South Portage lost to District 16: Tecumseh in the state championship game Thursday in Tecumseh 15-1. South Portage made a great run and had a fantastic season.

Great job girls - were all very proud of you.

7-8 Year Old All-Stars Undefeated after Quarter-Finals
Both of South Portage's 7-8 year old baseball All-Star teams are undefeated after pool play and the quarter-finals. It appears the teams are on a collision course with each other and will meet in the championship game Friday, August 12 in Three Rivers. If they both make it to the championship: the game will be a re-match of a quarter-final game in another tournament earlier this month. That game ended with "South Portage B" beating "South Portage A" 23-22 in the bottom of the sixth after "South Portage A" scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead 22-21.

To get to Friday's game though "South Portage B" or "White" must defeat a good Vicksburg team Thursday in Mattawan. Tuesday "South Portage B" defeated "Mattawan B" in a quarter-final game 15-5.

"South Portage A" or "Blue" went through their pool with little difficulty and isn't expected to meet much resistance. They played Milwood in a quarter-final game on Wednesday at Niles and won 14-4. They now move on to the semi-finals Thursday and play "Mattawan A".

our girls beat Georgetown by a score of 3-2.....

7-8 Year Old All-Stars in Action
South Portage has two 7-8 year old "All-Star" teams competing in a District 15 machine pitch tournament. "South Portage A" wearing Navy Jerseys are led by manager Jeff Merasco and "South Portage B" wearing white are led by manager Jim Lloyd.

Last year our "South Portage B" team was undefeated in the tournament and was crowned tournament champions. This year a very good showing is expected from both teams.

In addition to regular practices, both teams entered a machine pitch tournamnet put on by Dowagiac Little League. Both teams did very well in the tournament: "South Portage B" took 3rd place and "South Portage A" was just edged out 23-22 Saturday in the tournament quarter finals by "South Portage B".

7-8s End Wonderful Season
Both South Portage 7-8 year old All-Star teams concluded their season tonight at Mattawan Little League. In somewhat of a shocking conclusion to the season both teams lost for the first time in the tournament.

South Portage A wearing Navy jerseys lost to Mattawan A 12-4 and South Portage B wearing Gold lost to Vicksburg 14-8. Until tonight SPLL A never scored fewer than 10 runs and never gave up more than 6. Similairly SPLL B never scored below 12 runs and and only allowed more than 7 runs once - to West Portage.

Both teams had a wonderful post-season and represented SPLL very well all the way to the end.

11 Year Olds WIN District 2 Baseball Championship!
The South Portage 11 year old All-Star team cruised through district play winning four straight games by outscoring opponents 33-14. Jared VanderBor and Wolf Schafer shared the pitching duties during District 2 play each winning 2 games.

The Championship game against West Portage was a great one to watch as South Portage found itself down going into the 6th inning. But a timely double from Jared Vanderbor knocked in two runs (Jackson Schelb and Brandon West) putting South Portage ahead for good 6-5. The one run lead proved enough as the 11 year olds shut down West Portage in the bottom of the 6th. Wolf Schafer pitched the entire 6 innings for South Portage.

Next stop for the Champions won't be Disney World they must play a sectional with District 15 Champion Mattawan. The best of three sectional series is scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (if necessary) at Milwood Little League. All games begin at 6PM. Good Luck Boys - Go Get 'Em.

Monday, July 24
Senior Softball State Runner-Up
The South Portage Senior Girls worked their way into the State Championship by defeating Mattawan 8-2 in the 2nd Chance Bracket. South Portage started the tournament on fire defeating D9 Georgetown 5-1 and D15 Mattawan 9-0 before running into a stingy D5 Taylor team and losing 2-7.

South Portage needed to turn the tables on Taylor and beat them twice to claim the State Championship. Taylor would have none of it though and continued their exceptional defense not letting South Portage score while getting 9 runs themselves.

Great job girls, you made all of us at South Portage proud!

Senior Baseball Wins D2 CHAMPIONSHIP!
South Portage Senior Boys won the District 2 Championship Thursday night. They did things the hard way coming into the championship from the losers bracket and having to win two in a row (15-1 and 12-4)against an undefeated Northwood-Plainwell.

Our seniors are on a roll now though. The first two games they trailed early and had to come back from behind to secure one run wins: 10-9 against Milwood and 12-11 against Eastwood. Then they lost soundly to Northwood-Plainwell 3-9. That's when things started clicking and the boys started playing. A decisive win against Gull Lake (9-6) put South Portage into the D2 championship.

Great job boys! Good Luck at the State Tournament in Macomb Township next weekend.

Caleb Mergener then came to the plate and hit the first pitch delivered to him over the fence too. Not wanting to be outdone Caleb Lloyd hit the team's fourth home run of the night - a huge shot that may be still orbiting the Earth had a tree not been in the way.

10-11, Major, Junior and Senior Baseball All-Stars Win Districts
2010 Major Baseball Champions

South Portage is just one age-group away from a Baseball All-Star sweep. The 9-10 tournament is still playing out and it features a classic showdown between West and South Portage Little Leagues in the final game of the winners bracket. SPLL also played a big part on the District 2 Big League Baseball team that won the State title with both coaches and players from SPLL on the team.

Our 11 YO team took one on the chin Friday, but the Major Baseball team defeated D1 shepherd 10-5. Both our Junior and Senior teams play a sectional best 2 out ot 3 Saturday, July 24th at 2pm against the D15 champion which happens to be Schoolcradt for both divisions.

South Portage's Major Baseball Team joined it's 11 year old team as District 2 Champions. It took the second game of the championship series with Milwood to secure the title, but the boys in blue came out on top with a 2-0 win. Our Majors now move on to Gladstone for the Michign tournament where they play D1: Shepherd on Friday, D14 Bay City on Saturday and SWD4 Birmingham  on Sunday.

All-Stars Move on to State Tournament

SPLL's Senior Baseball All-Star team is another step closer to the World Series after defeating District 15's champion - Schoolcraft. A Saturday afternoon sweep of the Eagles (9-2 and 9-3) in a sectional gives our Senior boys a berth in the State tournament in Midland at Northwood University.

SPLL's 9-10 Softball All-Stars are also headed to the Michigan State LL tournament after sweeping the District 15 Champions (Constantine) in a best two out of three sectional 4-0 and 7-2. Both games were close played games that kept the fans in their seats and chewing on their nails. In game two a big 5 run 6th gave SP some breathing room but Constantine never quit and fought hard to the end. Good luck in Lac St Clair girls!

Our Junior Baseball team also played Schoolcraft in a sectional this weekend. Our Juniors fought hard to overcome a 0-6 deficit late in the first game to eventually win the game in the 9th inning. Unfortunately Schoolcraft ended up winning the next two to win the series and move on to the State tournament.

South Portage's 9-10 softball team had an incredible 10-1 run through Distict 2, a District 2 versus District 15 sectional and the State tournament. In the end just 2 runs seperated our fastpitchers from their ultimate goal. A lot of hard work, determination and effort paid high dividends for our very talented girls as they earned a second place finish in Michigan: out of all the Little Leagues in Michigan these 12 girls beat out all but one team.

Great Job Girls - We are ALL Proud of You!
