MIDGET PHILLIES 2011 INT'L CLASSIC CHAMPS

The South Interlake Phillies Midgets claimed Gold at the 2011 International Classic on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over the Smittys Terminators in the Gold Medal Final. Smittys scored 1 in the 1st, and Interlake tied it in the 2nd as Beckett singled and then scored on a RBI from Sam Anderson. In the 3rd Phillies went up 2-1, as Korrie Watt singled, stole 2nd and then scored on a RBI single from Taylor Studler. In the 4th Smittys threatened but stranded a runner at 3rd as a strikeout ended the inning. In the 5th Bre Marcon - Lajeunesse added an insurance run as she singled, stole 2nd and scored on a RBI from the bat of Brooke Beckett. Phillies had 7 hits and 2 walks, while on the mound for the Phillies, Lawrence allowed 3 hits, one walk, and fanned 4. In the semifinal vs Lightning, Sam Anderson broke up a 0-0 tie in the 5th with a solo blast to left to score the only run in a 1-0 victory. Phillies had 2 hits and a walk in the game. Jennie Van Doellen and Lindsey Dixon handled the pitching duties for the Phillies. Van Doellen allowed 1 hit and a walk over 3 innings and fanned 3. Dixon finished up allowing 1 hit and fanned 3. In the 3 preliminary games, Phillies dropped the opener 5-1 to Smittys and then crushed Eastman 24-1 in 2 1/2 innings. Phillies then squeaked by Westman 2-1 to finish 4th in the round robin. This is the 4th time in 5 years and the 5th time in 9 years that members of this Phillies age group have won the International Classic, with past wins including 2003 as Squirts, (where 3 members were still Mite age) 2007 as Peewees, 2008 and 2009 as Bantams and 2011 as Midgets. Even more remarkable is the fact that there was no Squirt Category for the team to play in 2004, and in 2005 the Squirt team played in the Peewee bracket and still made the playoff round. Congratulations PHILLIES!!!!!!

PHILLIES TURN HEADS IN VEGAS

Dreams of getting a scholarship to attend College and play fastpitch just got a whole lot closer for 6 girls from the South Interlake Phillies. Regan Lawrence, Lindsey Dixon, Taylor Studler, Morgan Dyregrov, Sam Anderson, and Bréanne Marcon all attended the City of Lights College Showcase Tournament in Las Vegas Nevada this past weekend as members of the Manitoba Selects. The Selects are an all-star team selected from across the province that practiced and played through the fall in preparation for this showcase event. The Showcase had over 80 College Coaches in attendance looking to recruit talented athletes for their teams. The girls played a total of 5 games over 2 days with their own team and then were split up and combined with other girls to form 24 new teams that worked out and played another 4 games under the direct guidance of College Coaches.  On Friday the girls were at the diamond by 7AM for testing which included throwing speed and timed baserunning. The girls were also rated on outfield and infield throws and fielding and individual positional skills. The afternoon saw the Selects play 3 games, which included a come from behind 8-4 win over a Phoenix Arizona team and a 5-1 win over Alta Lomas California. In the final game they lost 8-4 to another Arizona team. Saturday morning the girls broke off into their College coached teams for 2 games and then played 2 more with the Selects in the afternoon. Travel, jet lag, and playing rust took their toll as Manitoba dropped both games in the afternoon, but they did keep them within reach. Saturday night the girls had a break from the diamonds and caught some of Las Vegas night life and sights but were back at the diamond by 7AM. Sunday saw 2 more games with their College coached teams and then some quick goodbyes and off to catch a flight home. The team certainly turned some heads as all girls on the team garnered recognition. In fact one College Coach from Washington was heard to say he would like to take the entire team. Interest was widespread over the US, as College offers and proposals came from Florida to Washington and California to North Dakota. The players were in agreement that the facility was the nicest they had ever played on and the weekend was thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile. Any self doubts that the Phillie girls may have had, were cast aside and they came back with the belief that they can play with anyone and that they truly are capable of competing at the US College level. In fact, a number of the Phillie girls were formally recognized as standout athletes at the tournament and were invited to New York City in July for a “Best of The Best Tournament.” Manitoba Select Coach Wayne Dixon remarked that he believes that the trip was a rewarding experience both for him and the girls and that the communication regarding the recruitment and scholarship process between the College coaches and athletes was excellent. He also said that although the American girls play 150 games per year whereas Manitobans play 60, the quality and caliber of the Phillie organization has prepared Interlake girls with an exemplary program to develop. “Our girls are on par with the Americans.”

REGAN LAWRENCE TOP 2009 BANTAM

Congratulations to Phillie pitcher Regan Lawrence who was selected as Softball Manitoba's top Bantam Player for 2009. Regan's Phillie Bantam team captured Gold at the Bantam Provincials going undefeated. Highlights of Regan's season include a season ERA of .71, and a batting average of .304.  Regan faced 574 batters striking out 225 and walking 26, while allowing 36 runs.  At Nationals she pitched a total of 29.7 innings fanning 30 and walking 3. Defensively she was a rock as she only committed 1 error for the season. Regan never lost a game to any Manitoba opponent for the entire season, which included several games to Midget and Open Teams. At the High School Provincials she was selected MVP of the tournament pitching in 4 of 5 games going undefeated and not allowing an earned run.

2009 BANTAM SUMMARY

The 2009 season for the Phillie Bantams is now closed. The Bantams played 52 games finishing with a record of 42 wins and 10 losses. They did not lose a single game to a Manitoba Bantam team the entire year. The only games that they lost to a Bantam 16U team were at Nationals where they dropped 5 games. The other 5 losses were to a combination of American 17U teams, the Phillies Open team, and the Smittys ’92 Midget team. There were many highlights to the season with the top one being a Gold Medal at Provincials where they swept the opposition outscoring them 49-5 with 4 mercy calls.  The Bantams also went undefeated in the MLSSL with a record of 18-0. They placed leading players in all categories for offence in the league and swept the top 2 spots in all categories for pitching statistics. Memorable milestones were winning the International Classic for the 3rd straight year in a 6 game sweep outscoring the opposition 34-5, with 4 shutouts. The Phillies also won the Earl McNichol tournament in a 5 game sweep, with 4 shutouts and a 46-3 run differential. Other moments were defeating Smittys ‘91 Midgets 3-1, the Lightning Midgets 2-0 in a no hitter, and defeating the Phillies Open team 2 out of 3 times. The Phillies shut out the opposition 19 times but were only shut out themselves 4 times. They outscored the opposition 339-84. The Bantam pitching was very dominant with a team ERA of .94 and an average of 11 strikeouts per game. Lindsey Dixon threw 3 perfect games not allowing a runner, and Regan Lawrence threw one. The 3 Phillie pitchers threw a total of 10 no hitters, 9 one hit games and 8 two hit games. The Phillies mercied the opposition 17 times during the year.

At Nationals some cold bats and too many uncharacteristic errors cost Interlake as they went 2 and 5, losing out to Quebec 4-3 in a tiebreaker. To their credit they competed very evenly and were in every game losing one 1 run game, two 2 run games and one 3 run game. The highlights were the pitching of Regan Lawrence and Lindsey Dixon and the batting of Taylor Studler (.391AVG). At the Ringneck Tournament in Sioux Falls the Phillies went 2 and 3, losing two 2-0 games and a 3-2 loss.

Perhaps the most signifigant and exciting event of the year for the team and the organization as a whole, was the selection of Courtney Kwasnitza to the 16U Team Canada squad. Kwasnitza was the lone Manitoban selected on a team of 17. Courtney participated in the World 16U tournament in Prague Czech Republic and though they failed to come back with a medal, they made a great showing and Courtney contributed with your bat, glove, and base running.

Special thanks to Wayne Dixon for his tireless efforts in preparing the girls for competition throughout the winter and during the season, for running the clinics, and the pitching school, and the hundreds of other things that he does that go unnoticed. To Scott Kwasnitza, Pat Beckett, and Uncle Ed Pull, Thank you for all your help, support, and knowledge, you guys make it so worthwhile and rewarding. Thanks to the team members of the 2009 Bantam Phillies, congratulations on yet another wonderful and rewarding year. You are indeed a very special group of young ladies it has been a privilege to be involved with you. Thanks to June McMahon for all your help with the scorekeeping and tending to the girls injuries and all the little things you do on the bench. Thanks to Sherry Beckett, Monica Kwasnitza, Sabine Dyregrov, Sue Anderson, and Colleen Cowie, for all the help in your organizing and running the many fundraisers and travel events, and tournaments. To all the other parents, and grandparents (Barry and Shirley PHILLIE) who helped and supported the team thankyou. Lastly a special thank you to Brett and Sabine Dyregrov for the generosity and support you have given to this team in so many and on so many occasions.

1995 Bantam Phillies
1995 saw the start of the Phillie organization. This Bantam team struggled in that first year going 5 wins and 25 losses, but come Provincials they played with heart and tenacity and to their credit they did not finish last as they were in every game but one. The coach Larry Klimpke remembers the highlight as being after the Provincial game vs Brandon when the Brandon coach congratulated him and the team on how much they had improved from the start of the year. Two original players Dan Dalton and Erin Klimpke are still members of the Phillies as members of the Open team.
