Grady Sain - Varsity Head Coach

Head Coach Grady Sain is enterring his 6th season at South in 2012.   The Spartans are 80-65-2 in the last five years and have made it to the CIF playoffs 4 of the 5 years under his leadership.

Coach Sain was a 3 year varsity letterman and earned all-league honors while playing shortstop for West Torrance High.  His baseball career continued at El Camino JC, Chico State and Azusa Pacific University.  Coach Sain holds an MA from CSU Dominguez Hills and teaches Health Education when not on the field.  Coach Sain and his wife of 8 years Denise have 2 children, a 4 year old boy Logan and a 2 year old girl, Isabella.

Prior to South, Coach Sain was head coach at San Pedro High from 2004-2006 compiling a 72-24-2 record and 2 Marine League championships.  He earned Daily Breeze Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after leading San Pedro to a 31-4 record and the LA City championship game at Dodger Stadium.



Tom Sain - Varsity Assistant Coach, Hitting

Coach Tom Sain has been playing and coaching baseball for over 4 decades.  He was a 3 year starter at Mira Costa High and went on to play at Arizona State University.  Tom played professionally with the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros.  Coach Sain focuses on hitting and has developed many outstanding hitters in the South Bay.  In addition to coaching with his son Grady at San Pedro High form 2004-06, Tom has also coached at Peninsula High, El Camino JC and professionally at the AA level.  Tom and his wife Marie have 2 sons, Grady and Greg (who played professionally) and 1 daughter Michelle.

Bobby Summers - Varsity Assistant Coach, Pitching
Coach Bobby Summers enters the 2013 season as his first year at South. He has been a Varsity Assistant Coach at El Segundo High School for three years. An assistant at Cerro Coso College for a year, and one year as the Head Coach at Bishop Montgomery. Summers graduated from El Segundo High School in 2002 and played football and baseball. He went on to play baseball at Harbor College and then went on to play at Upper Iowa University where he also received his degree in Sports Management. He has a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University and a teaching credential in PE. Summers and his wife Gianna, have a two year old daughter, Kate.


Dale St. John - JV Head Coach

Coach St. John graduated from South High in 1964.  He played under South legend, Coach Jerry MacIllvain, where he was  a 1st Team All-Bay League pitcher ('64 ).  Dale played 2 years for the SF Giants rookie team (Semi-Pro).   He has played Men's Senior Baseball (over 55) for the last 25 years and won the Men's Senior Baseball World Series in 2007.  Prior to his high school coaching experience, he was Manager of the NorthTorrance Little League Senior All-Stars (15-16) that went to the State Finals.   Dale began his high school coaching career with 4 years at North High - 2 years with the Frosh/Soph team, 1 year as Varsity Pitching Coach and 1 year as JV Head Coach where his team went 17-4-1.  His next 7 years were at Morningside High as either the JV Coach or  Assistant Varsity Coach.   Dale was the Morningside High Head Coach for the 2009 and 2010 seasons with a record of 12-38.  Coach St. John has been happily married for the last 33 years.  He and his wife Barbara have raised 3 children: Tiffany 28, Matthew 27 and Jamie 22.



Tom Kirshy - Freshmen Head Coach
Tom Kirshy is our new coach of the Frosh squad.  Tom has extensive varsity head coaching experience at Inglewood (2010) and Huntington Park (2011) High Schools.  We're excited to have Tom join the Spartan coaching staff for the 2012 season.
