SAYING GOOD-BYE TO BEING A RAM!
A Personal Message from SGYFC President, Lora L. Gonzalez

At the conclusion of 2008, we will say good-bye to being a South Gate Ram.  No one is more disappointed nor saddened by this change than myself.  For I am in my heart a true Ram Fan and shall always remain one.  South Gate High School is where I grew up, where I met some of the best friends in my life, where I met the love of my life (as a head cheerleader and he was the quarterback), where I raised my four children as Ram athletes in softball, volleyball, basketball and of course, football and in cheerleading.  And even when the score was not in our favor, or how I have watched with disappointment and heartache the many changes affecting our high school, its Ram Football program and its disappointing seasons of no wins, the loss of so many great mentor-teachers who gave so much of themselves to our students, I continued to believe in the Ram traditions and of course in Ram Pride!

The South Gate Youth Football & Cheerleading Program was initially designed as a "support" program to SGHS.  This was established in 1989, and we came out onto the fields of youth competition as South Gate Rams in 1990.  For 19 years we have identified ourselves as members of the great Ram Family at SGHS.  "We are South Gate---We are Ram Pride," I believed would go on forever.

In recent years we have been fighting a silent, behind-the-scenes battle with current SGHS administration who does not share in the same beliefs of support to our community and mostly in support of what we have accomplished as a youth sport program.  Because of this, we have encountered many changes which have adversely affected our program.  All of which has consummed more time and energy than I have ever dedicated to any one cause in my entire life.

But throughout all of the conflict, this adversity, and mostly the realization that our once shared relationship with SGHS administration and its coaching leadership is no longer a reality, came a true sense of where the South Gate Youth Football & Cheerleading Program needed to be....

We need to be our own true self, our own separate identity...to be disconnected from a family to which we are no longer welcomed as a South Gate Ram.

So this is our new direction as we enter a New Year and a new season of youth football and cheerleading in 2009....We will become the AZTECS of SOUTH GATE...the fighting Aztec Warriors.  A name which is indicative of our Latin community, and the best opportunity for us to "re-new" and "re-dedicate" ourselves as we continue in our goals and our objectives as a youth sport program....to bring our youth closer together through the means of a common interest in sportsmanship, fair play, and fellowship.

This will be a positive move for our program, and as we celebrate 20-years in the South Gate community in 2009, we will do so in support of both high schools; to teach and to nurture our student-athletes to compete in one of the greatest sports programs ever....FOOTBALL!  (And, of course to be a high school cheerleader).

Having been a leader of the SGYFC organization since 1994, for me personally, I am filled with excitement as we approach this new endeavor.  I am also heartbroken to say good-bye to the Ram Program, my alma mater, and hope someday to see SGHS regain its pride, its spirit and  the traditions which have always made SGHS athletics number one---win or lose---we were a program (and a school) to be proud of!!!  I will never forget what it has given me or to my children...in my heart I know that my South Gate Pride came from Ram Pride.

So with South Gate Pride, I say to you, we hope to see you all back again with us in 2009 as we celebrate 20-years of youth football and cheerleading and as we become a "new" program of AZTEC WARRIORS....let's do this....let's make this the year to remember!

Sincerely,

Lora L. Gonzalez

To the Ram Players, Cheerleaders, Family and Friends:
It has been my sincere pleasure to be a part of the SOUTH GATE RAM family, to have been president of SGYF since 1994.  To establish the traditions which has made the South Gate Ram Football Program outstanding and number one, even if it has not been reflective on the scoreboard this season.  Do not take away or diminish the hard work of our young student-athletes in the name of South Gate Ram Football.  For we have undergone extraordinary changes that have impacted our program, more negative, some positive.  Yet, nothing can take away our pride for who we are and what we represent in the name of South Gate Rams.

In the past 19 years of youth Ram Football (and cheerleading) we have had many successes, and we have also faced adversity, and the rebuilding of our program.  This is our past, this is how we got here, this is who we are today.  And in face of these adversities, the one thing that stays consistent is the “heart” of the Ram Football Program through its board, coaches, players and cheerleaders. From the soles of your feet to every ounce of blood in your body, you have laid it on the line until the whistles blows—and because of this we cannot lose.  We may be behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game, but when we play like this, we cannot be defeated.  How you played the game is how you will be remembered.  This is our opportunity to rise from adversity and grab glory.  We are—SOUTH GATE!  We are—RAM PRIDE!

It has been through this ADVERSITY, through these bad times that we learn to build character and to find out how tough you are.  But we overcome it and we fight our way through it.  We knew there is not going to be instant success on the scoreboard in the rebuilding of our Program.  The greatest lesson in athletics is to face adversity, get back up off the ground and go into success.  This is what we do.  Rebuilding the Program...while we may not have many victories on the scoreboard, our victories will come again in the near future and we will share in those victories in knowing we had some small part of rebuilding the foundation of our teams.  It is a team thing— coaches—players, it is our goal.  You have represented and exemplified hope, perseverance, dedication, loyalty and camaraderie, and as a by-product, we have all become a part of those core values as well.   In the end, it is my hope and my dedication that you come out of the South Gate Youth Football Program a better player/cheerleader, academically complete and with a very deep realization that there is more to life than just football and a job…

Best wishes and continued success of each of our teams, coaches, players and cheerleaders and I look forward to the future success of the South Gate Youth Football and Cheerleading Program.

A SEASON OF RAM FOOTBALL COMES TO AN END...

Thanks for an enjoyable 2008!

On behalf of the entire 2008 Board of Directors, thank you to everyone who made this such a successful year.

Thank you to all the football players for giving it your all, for showing up to practice, even when you were tired, sore or would rather have been doing something else.  For playing whatever position the coaches put you in, even though you wanted to play somewhere else.  For showing up an hour and a half before your game to get ready and for oftentimes staying around after your game to root on another Ram team.

Thank you to the cheerleaders for being there for every game.  For pumping up the players and the crowd.  Thank you for all the hours of practice in the cold, even though you had a ton of school work.  Thank you for coming to cheer competition and "bringing it!"  Thank you for the generosity you showed each other by performing your routines for one another.  Thank you for not only competing at Magic Mountain, but also for doing so well in front of so many.

Thank you to all the football coaches, cheer coaches and trainers for all the personal time you gave up to help these boys and girls.  Thank you for all the leadership skills and life skills you passed on to our kids.  Thank you for your patience.  Thank you for conducting yourself with such class when representing yourself, your team, your chapter and your city.

Thank you to all the team moms and dads who stepped up to volunteer in the program, for making the games, the competitions, and the extracurricular activities possible.  Thank you for helping to make this a fun experience!

Thank you to the parents for the enormous faith you demonstrated in the program when you registered your child.  Thank you for being there not only for your own kids, but the others as well.  Thank you for being crazy positive, even when things could have been better.  Thank you for taking time out of your own life to show your kids that they are important to you and that you are genuinely interested in them and their activities.

Thank you everyone for allowing me to continue to serve as your President.  I look forward to being at your service in the 2009 season, and I hope to see everyone back again in the New Year!

Thank you, THANK YOU!
