This webpage is dedicated to the South Gate Youth Football Player and the Cheerleader student-athlete. The SGYF Program is commited to education and rewarding its student-athletes for their academic achievements throughout the season. The SGYF SCHOLASTIC RECOGNITION and ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAM is written into our By-Laws and copied into our Player and Cheerleader Handbooks.
JOHN C. ASTON, SGYF Scholastic Director
"The SGYF organization is commited to the student-athlete and the promotion of academic achievement. Thus, in 1994, the organization designed its Scholastic Recognition and Academic Support Program. This program shall continue to develop with each New Year and shall be supervised by a Scholastic Director, an elected position on the Board of Directors. The goal and objective of this Program is to provide encouragement for academics and to keep the student-athlete [players and cheerleaders] interested and successful in school."

PARENTS:
We recognize the importance we must place on school and academics. Because we are an "extracurricular" program---something outside of school---we know that we must encourage and motivate our players and cheerleaders to maintain a "sound scholastic" record throughout our season together. The SGYF Program is designed to include scholastic recognition and rewards to its player-cheerleader athletes. Your child could be the recipient of scholastic patches, stickers, plaques, and other rewards of recognition we have planned and budgeted for.
How does my child participate? We ask that every player and cheerleader provide a monthly report on grades. Initially, at registration, we ask for a copy of your child's most recent report card. For each month thereafter, you will receive a form that you must sign and provide to your child's teacher to notify us of their current academic status. The first Wednesday of each month, beginning August, we will gather our teams together on the football field to give recognition and rewards to our student athletes. Players and cheerleaders who participate will be eligible for a free raffle to win great school-related prizes. Finally, at our year-end awards ceremony (December), we will recognize the player and cheerleader from each team with the highest GPA with an OCJAAF Scholastic Plaque, to be also named on the OCJAAF All American Scholastic Team.
This program does not work without your help and support to provide us your child's academic records. Good or bad, we want to start somewhere and to encourage our players and cheerleaders to stay motivated in school and to obtain scholastic achievement.
We look forward to our season together in 2008!

From the Desk of...
Bill Alford,
OCJAAF Scholarship Director
"OCJAAF initiated the Scholarship Program so that our youth will be encouraged to perform well on the football field and more importantly to perform well in the classroom. By the organization investing more people, time and money toward the student side of our student-athlete, we will be helping our young people to be better prepared as they enter high school, college, and ultimately the workforce."
"While in our youth program our greatest importance is to challenge the youth to make them well-rounded and assets to society. We must take the challenge to encourage our youth to keep their grades up, maintain high classroom attendance, and to get involved in school and community activities. They will carry this foundation throughout their lives."
"In OCJAAF there is the commitment to ENCOURAGE SCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE. The leadership of the OCJAAF staff and the executive council is encouraging everyone to put their support behind this noble cause."
