League Background
The Southern Senior Baseball League can trace its beginnings to the Spring/Summer of 1990. Steve Parker placed an ad in the Huntsville Times instructing anyone Over-40 interested in forming a baseball league to report to the Johnson High School for an organizational meeting. This nucleus of players gathered on successive weekends to practice and play baseball. After a couple of weeks their numbers had swelled to enough to form four teams. These teams started with a 12 game season and then added another 10 games to complete our initial season of Over-40 baseball in Huntsville. The first couple of seasons had unique rules; no single individual could pitch over three innings in a game, and teams used four outfielders on defense. In 1992 our league joined the MABL/MSBL organization. At the time our league was one of only two stand alone Over-40 leagues in the nation. 1993 saw our rules modified in that the innings pitched limitation was removed and teams could only use three outfielders on defense.
Our league continued to grow and by 1997 we allowed Over-30 teams to participate in our league. Last year we reorganized our divisions so we had four Over-25 teams in one division and eight Over-40 teams in another division. Inter-division games were played as requested by participating teams. Members and teams from our league have participated in the MSBL Arizona World Series, the MSBL Fall Classic in Tampa, regional tournaments in Atlanta and Puerto Rico, and the Roy Hobbs tournament in Fort Myers. Our league also hosts a Labor Day Tournament each year that attracts teams from throughout the Southeast.
