Southern Maine Flame U-23 Black
Welcome to the 2011 Southern Maine Flame U-23 web page. We're a group of dedicated College softball players from throughout Maine. We travel throughout the Northeast, seeking high quality Pony, NSA and ASA-Junior Olympic Tournament opponents. This year's schedule will include attendance at 3-4 events. The desire is to maintain the skills required for Collegiate play. The 2011 team is mostly comprised of former players from the Southern Maine Flame U-18 Black. Players from UMaine, Niagara, Babson, Bowdoin, Endicott, Gettysburg, Merrimac & Swarthmore are presently interested. The Flame organization has over 40 past & former players on College teams currently.
At present, the team is still looking for a few more position players so if you have interest, contact Steve Martin at smarti14@maine.rr.com
This year, the Flame will sponsor 2 teams at the U-23 level. The U-23 Red should also be highly competitive so we look forward to some interesting battles. Their web site can be found at: http://www.eteamz.com/SouthernMaineflame18URed/index.cfm?
We'll once again host our very popular Southern Maine Diamond Challenge. Over 40 teams participated this past June with most age groups full by early February. June 10-12 will be the weekend for U-10, U-12 & U-14 with U-16 and U-18 held June 17-19. We are considering a small U-23 component on June 18-19. If you have interest, again, contact Steve Martin at the e-mail address shown above.

2010 Southern Maine Flame 18 Black
Welcome to the 2010 Southern Maine Flame U-18 web page. We're a group of dedicated High School & College softball players from throughout Maine. We travel throughout the Northeast, seeking high quality Pony, NSA and ASA-Junior Olympic Tournament opponents. This year's schedule will include attendance at 3-4 College Showcase events. We welcome back 11 players from the 2009 team & 1 player who returns to the team after a 1 year absence. The team finished 2009 with a 22-10 record while playing in some of the most prestigious and competitive tournaments in the Northeast. The highlight of the year was being runner-up at the Tradition College Showcase, going 7-1 on the weekend.
This group still has 6 from our original U12 team. Since that time, the team has compiled a 144-73 record despite playing in 4 National events & 7 showcases.
In the last 2 years, we've sent 11 players on to play College ball and will add to that list in September.
UMaine, Niagara, Wheaton, USM, Babson, Bowdoin, Endicott, Gettysburg, Merrimac & Swarthmore. The Flame organization has 33 past & former players on College teams currently.
This year, the Flame will sponsor 2 teams at the U-18 level. The U-18 Red should also be highly competitive so we look forward to some interesting battles. Their web site can be found at: http://www.eteamz.com/SouthernMaineflame18URed/index.cfm?

U-18 say goodbye to many
Each year, the Flame must say good-bye to graduating players. This year was especially emotional as 7 of these athletes, go back to the 2003 season. No stats are available for that U-11 team as Coach Lang & Martin didn't take over until U-12. Since that 2004, the team compiled a record of 163 wins - 69 losses & 2 ties. Barring the formation of a U23 team we say good bye & thank you to:
Melissa Dellatorre----Bowdoin College
Catie Funk----Babson College
Helen Gillis---Merrimack College
Katie Lang---Gettysburg College
Colleen Martin---Endicott College
Emily Richardson---Swarthmore University
Tricia Thibodeau--Bowdoin College
Joining us for the last 2 years, we also must say goodbye to:
Stephanie Thibeault---Curry College

U-18 Black finish in style
The U-18 Black team finished the season in style by going 4-0 @ it's finale in Waterville. After competing for many years against it's sister team, the Flame Red, it was only fitting that the 2 teams would meet in the all Flame final. Many from these 2 teams aged out after this season so it was great to see the championship picture taken with both team's players and coaches are in arm.
The Black outscored their opponents 31-6 in the 4 games and finish it's season with a 23-9-2 record.

U-18 Black wins Bracket at Devens Showcase
The Flame continued to pound the ball in event 2, going 4 & 1 at the highly competitive showcase. Friday night brought a 5-2 win over the Stratford Breakers. The 1st game of the day on Saturday is usually not a good sign when followed by a late evening team dinner. After 4 batters, the Flame were down 3-0 on a 3 run homer. Down 4-1 in the 7th, with the tying run at the plate, the game was stopped by the 90 "drop-dead" rule. With 2 games to go that day, at the main complex, the ladies decided to flex some muscles, beginning with a 8-0 run rule over the Boston Batbusters. The onslaught continued in the next game with a 12-3 win over the Firecracker Brats. Sunday morning saw our last opponent, the Brewster Rockets. The Flame got a quick 4 runs in the 1st inning but quickly gave 2 back in the bottom half. Things went quiet after that and the Flame held on for a 5-2 win. The 4 & 1 record, while outscoring our opponents 31-11, was solid enough to win our bracket and qualify for the 2011 World Series.

U-18 Black off and running
The U18 opened their 2010 season over Father's Day weekend, going 3-1-1 in the SMDC. In the opener Friday night, runs were scored early in often while the pitching staff combined for a 2-hitter in the 10-0 win over the Riptide. Things went no better for the opponents in game 2 as the Flame scored 14 while allowing their 1st run of the season to the Mass Mayhem. In game 3, Frozen Ropes got a 2 out, last inning Home Run to tie the Flame 2-2 in this pitching duel. Gaining the 2 seed, the fully staffed Flame scored 5 in the 1st and that was all that was needed in a 5-1 win over the Heat. Losing 2 players to work, 1 to injury, 1 to an awards banquet and 2 to prior comittments, the undermaned Flame went down 7-0 in the semi's.
