The number of teams at each level in a given area is dependent on the number of qualified players. A typical Starz team consists of 17-20 players. All teams are chosen through tryouts where athletes are evaluated by coaches and/or advisors.
Starz has two playing sessions during the year. The summer session begins in early June and concludes in late July and the fall session begins around October 1st and runs until mid-December. Each team is scheduled 3-5 playing weekends during the session and each playing weekend includes 1-3 games. Teams practice 1-2 times per week during the session. Each session participates in a variety of tournaments/jamborees.
A session begins with a local weekend training camp. This is an opportunity for players to meet and begin the bonding/teambuilding process. The weekend consists of educational/instructional programs, workouts, drills and scrimmages. A personal trainer will be provided on one of the days to help with conditioning programs for each team/player. Also included in the weekend is a team barbeque, including families, and a presentation by the director to the team parents. Many clubs will have special guest instructors included in the weekend.
Regular session games are considered Starz Cup games and are used to determine the power rankings throughout the west. At the end of each session the top team has its name engraved on the Starz Cup. Additionally, MVP and sportsmanship awards are presented by the league at the conclusion of each session.
