attitude counts
The SouthBay Lightning Basketball Team is a girl's travel Amatuer Athletic Union (AAU) team based in San Pedro, California. We have a terrific coach and a great group of girls (grades 4 through 8) and are committed to building an organization and basketball environment that we can all be proud of. Our goal is to give all players enough basketball knowledge and skill to allow them to walk on the floor of any high school and be able to compete immediately at the Varsity level. To this end, we are looking for athletes committed to hard work, improving individual and team skills, mastering fundamentals, putting the team first, sportsmanship and loving the game. We are currently recruiting additional players for the upcoming AAU season in the 10u, 11u, 12u and 13u divisions. For detailed information about the team, please read the SouthBay Lightning Information and Rules documents found in the "Handouts" section or call (310) 544-1054. Coach McCollum's coaching resume can be found by double clicking on his name on the ROSTER page.

SouthBay Lightning & MB Tidal Waves To Merge

Coach Byron McCollum is pleased to announce that the SouthBay Lightning Girls Basketball organization has combined with the Manhattan Beach Tidal Waves to form the SOUTHBAY WAVES. The immediate merging of these two organizations will allow us to play more competitively as well as enable us to reach more potential basketball players throughout the entire south bay area. At the moment, arrangements are being made to acquire practice times at various gyms in the south bay. We anticipate practicing in Manhattan Beach (Aviation Gym complex, American Martyrs Gym, Mira Costa High School) as well as in San Pedro (Dana Middle School and possibly Harbor College). All players will be kept informed as to practice times and practice locations via email. At this time we are planning to have 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams. Coach McCollum will serve as program director as well as coach the 8th grade team, and possibly a 7th/8th grade combination team.

Anyone visiting this site for the first time that would like more information on the new SOUTHBAY WAVES, please call:

In addition, a new website for the SOUTHBAY WAVES is in development and will be up and running in the near future. Until then, please check this website for all WAVES announcements, news, practice times, etc.

We are very excited about what the future will bring for this new organization and are confident that the merging of these two teams will offer new challenges to SouthBay Lightning players.

Santa Monica 10u Tournament Results

SouthBay Lightning 10u Team

Congratulations to the SouthBay Lightning 10u team for doing well in the Santa Monica Surf tournament held June 15-16 at Santa Monica College. The Surf put on a terrific tournament that included 5 guaranteed games (that's almost unheard of!!) and also attracted some very competitive teams from SoCal as well as from the Bay Area. Lightning fans were treated to some very close and exciting games - for many of our newer players, this was their first experience playing non-recreational level basketball.

Here's a brief rundown of the games:

Game #1 was the team's first introduction to a different pace of basketball - compliments of the East Bay Xplosion. The Lightning hung in with EBX for the first half, but ended up losing by by approximately 15 points.

Game #2 against the Santa Monica Surf was a fast-paced, exciting game that was decided at the buzzer. The Lightning missed two shots in the last minute that would have put them ahead in the score - and Santa Monica took advantage of that by putting up a last second basket to win the game by 2 points.

In Game #3, the Lightning and the Encanto Lady Bulls played another exciting game that ended with the Lady Bulls over the Lightning by one point.

As if all these close games weren't enough, Game #4 went into overtime with the Boyle Heights Wildcats! SouthBay supporters got their money's worth as they cheered the Lightning on to a three point win over the Wildcats.

The Lightning faced the Orange County Quakes in the final game of the tournament. Southbay had an 18-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, but the Quakes came roaring back after the half and caught up, setting the stage for another nail-biting finish. This game also went right down to the last few seconds, but the Lightning held on and ended up beating the OC Quakes by one point.

Thanks again to the Surf for putting together an outstanding tournament and congratulations to all the teams for playing such competitive basketball!
