Final Countdown
Donnels Steps Down From Manager Post
Dennis Donnels, who has managed the Cubs to a 20-13 record over the past three seasons, has decided to take a break from running the team.
"There's no better group of guys to ball with on the weekend's, but I need a break," stated Donnels. "This past season took a lot out of me," he added.
The announcement by Donnels had been expected since the beginning of the season, and now leaves the door open for a new manager to take the reigns.
"Somebody else can run the show for a while - or maybe we'll just take a short break and come back for the next season."
Cubs Battle Into Semifinals In Wood Bat Tourney
The South Bay Cubs, stricken by injuries and a few rostered no-shows, made an impressive run through pool play and into the semifinals of last weekend's NABA Holly"wood" Bat Tournament. However, the Cubs' luck (and pitching) ran out in the semi's as they lost to a tough Norwalk Blues team by a final score of 8-5.
"These guys played their asses off," stated Cubs' manager Dennis Donnels. "Considering that we were down to 10 players and only three pitchers throughout the tournament, I'd say we made a pretty good showing. These teams definitely don't want to see 'South Bay Cubs' in their pool for next year's tourney."
Here's a few brief highlights:
** Game 1 - Sat. 1/17/04 9:00 am vs. Stockton Red Raiders
The Cubs fell behind early giving up four runs in the first inning and never really caught up. Carl Abramson went the distance for the Cubs and picked up the loss. Outfielders Ruben Olmos (2-4, 3 RBI's) and Gil Gamboa (3-4, 2 RBI's) were the offensive leaders for the Cubs, who lost by a final score of 10-6.
** Game 2 - Sat. 1/17/04 1:00 pm vs. L.A. City Blaze
The Cubbies battled back in a must-win game Saturday afternoon at Artesia High School. Lefty Dennis Donnels gave up three first inning runs to the Blaze, but shut the Blaze down for a complete game win. Donnels allowed four runs, walked two and struck out six. Carl Abramson (3-5, 3 RBI's, 2 SB), Pat Perry (1-4, 2 RBI's), and Donnels (2-4, run scored) led the Cubs' offense to a 6-4 victory.
** Game 3 - Sun. 1/18/04 9:00 vs. Las Vegas Boomers
Josh Castlen took the mound in another must-win situation and led the Cubs into the playoff picture. The Cubs dominated this one in every area of the game as Castlen cruised to a seven inning, two hit shutout of the Boomers. Castlen was nearly perfect, walking only two and striking out seven. Nine of the ten Cubs batters had a hit as the Cubs amassed a 16-0 romp. Ruben Olmos (3-4, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI's) had another solid game with the lumber, while Castlen and Dennis Donnels each added two RBI's.
** Game 4 - Sun. 1/18/04 1:30 pm vs. Norwalk Blues
After going 2-1 in their pool and advancing to the semifinals, the shorthanded Cubs faced the undefeated Norwalk Blues. One day removed from a nine inning outing Dennis Donnels took the mound again, lasting into the sixth inning down by a score of 6-3. Josh Castlen, who had thrown seven impressive innings in the morning was solid again in relief, but the Cubs were unable to get the timely hits to overcome the Blues. The Cubs had several opportunities, but left runners on base and were kept at bay by a tough Norwalk defense. Catcher Anthony Lopez, Castlen, and Gil Gamboa each had three hits for the Cubs.
