Umpiring in the British Baseball Federation
Every sport needs an official baseball is no exception.
At present there are only enough umpires in the UK to officiate National League and Premier Division Games. The British Baseball Federation (BBF) and the Amateur Baseball Umpires Association of Great Britain (ABUA-GB) seek to increase the number of umpires in the UK.
The ABUA-GB runs clinics every year to train umpires, the 2007 Clinic is at Upper Heyford the National Training Center for baseball on March 3rd & 4th. The Saturday is for Level 1 & 2, and Sunday Level 3 & 4. If you are completely new to umpiring or even the game the Level 1 and 2 course will prepare you to umpire BBF games.
At the Division 1 and Division 2 level the home team must supply the umpire from within their team, umpires are often also players or coaches but are also certified ABUA umpires.
All ABUA umpires are paid to umpire. For a Premier Division game the fee is £25 (1 umpire 9 inning game, fees vary for more than 1 umpire per game and 7 inning games) plus £0.20 a mile for travel. As an umpire if you progress to the National League level you can receive £30 a game plus travel. After that you can obtain European selection or even be asked to umpire in the Little League World Series in Williamsport PA.
