Solar '92 Girls Assigned New Coaches

David Ringer
May 9, 2006

Effective immediately, Fleur Benatar and Nick Stavrou have assumed coaching responsibilities for the Solar ’92 Girls. Fleur is returning to coaching with Solar after the graduation of the Solar ’87 Girls. Coach Benetar is the head coach of women’s soccer at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. Coach Stavrou currently co-coaches the ’89 Girls and the ’95 Boys. Both of these coaches had successful collegiate careers and bring a wealth of experience to the ’92 Girls as they prepare for and begin their U-15 season.

Coach Kioumars Rezaie still coaches the ’90 Girls and ’93 Girls teams and has assumed other duties within the Solar Club. In coaching this team since its formation at U-11, “Q” started and continued this great team in Division I and worked tirelessly for its success. In accepting the new position and in helping with this change of assignments, Coach Rezaie worked just as hard for the good of the girls. The players on this team appreciate all that work and send their thanks for his dedication to the team. Everyone is excited about the upcoming year!

At UNT, she assisted with several duties including on-field coaching, practices, travel, the spring season, recruiting, and many other administrative tasks.

Benatar joined the UNT staff prior to the 2000 season after a year of coaching in the high school ranks in California, where she served as the head coach of the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at La Jolla (Calif.) High School. In her one season at La Jolla, Benatar led the team to a first-place finish in its district with a 8-1-1 record. Benatar also served as the coach of the Nomads Soccer Club, a boys' club team, and was a youth coach for the girls in La Jolla.

Challenge Game Format

Under 14 Challenge

In the first round, D’Feeters advanced over Andromeda in a 2-0 elimination game.

In the second round, Solar and FC Texas tied 1-1 for 4 points each. D'Feeters and Tejanos tied 2-2 for five points each.

Format review
Round 2 is round-robin games with D'Feeters, FC Texas, Tejanos and Solar. Round robin games may end in a tie.  Points are accumulated according to the following 10-point system:

6 points for a win               1 point for each goal scored, up to a maximum of 3
3 points for a tie                1 point for a shutout
0 points for a loss              A 0-0 tie is 4 points to each team

At the end of the round robin, teams are ranked one through four based on their point totals. The top two teams with the highest point total qualify for Division I in Fall 2006, provided they keep their N+1. The third and fourth place teams have a bye in Division II, provided they keep their N+1. Should any team with a Division I bye for Fall 2006 fail to keep their N+1, the third place team automatically moves to Division I, provided they keep their N+1. If two teams lose their bye, both the third and fourth place teams move into Division I, provided they keep their N+1.

Solar to Quarterfinals in Sereno
Solar advanced to the quarterfinals in the Sereno tournament, with a 2-2-0 record. We were beat in the quarterfinals by the Texans, who advanced to the finals, losing only in a shoot-out with the Slammers, the #1-ranked 92 team in the nation. Solar played the Slammers first up, and though the California girls pulled ahead 3-1, we were the only team in the tournament to score on them. The second game was against the Divas, which Solar won 2-1. It was an exciting match, start to finish. In the consolation game, we played Inter Blue, also winning 2-1. Some good competition -- and some hard work from our girls!
