INDIRECT KICK- BLOCK THE GOALIES VIEW

Description of Set Piece:
This set piece takes the work of four players. Two players should stand shoulder to shoulder in front of the ball, with their backs to the goal, blocking the goalies view. The other two players in this set piece are the potential shooters. For the purpose of instruction, lets call them players 3 and 4 and consider player 3 as a left-footed player while player 4 will be a right-footed player. These two athletes should be 5 - 10 yards behind the ball, ready to run on to it and take a shot. Let's say that you want your left-footed player (player 3) to take the shot. Both player 3 and player 4 should begin their runs at exactly the same time. They should be headed towards the goal, player 3 on the left side of the ball and the player 4 on the right side. As they get close to the ball, approximately 5 more steps and they are ready to take the shot, one of the two players shielding the ball from the goalies sight lightly passes the ball to one of the sides. In this case the left-footed player is taking the shot, so the pass should go to the left footed players side. The shot is taken and the goalie has very little time to react.
What to look for Coaches:
The two players shielding the ball must always stay together. If they separate at all the goalie may be able to see just enough of the ball to get an early jump on it and make the save. It is also very important that the four players get together before the shot and decide who is actually going to take the shot. If the passers just surprise the shooters, the shooters won't be ready and the shots will not be successful. It is good to practice this drill with a defensive wall in the shooters way. This increases the reality of the situation and makes the shooters feel like they are actually in a game
