INDIRECT KICK- THROUGH THE LEGS

Description of Set Piece:

This set piece takes the work of 4 players. Two players stand next to the ball, one on each side, with their legs spread open. These players should be standing sideways or parallel to the sidelines. They should be a foot or two away from the ball. The third player should be lined up 5-10 yards behind the ball as if he/she were going to take the kick. The fourth player should be set up much the same as player three. For the purpose of this instruction lets say player three is left footed and player four is right footed. If you want your right footed player to take the shot (player 4) you are going to have player one (standing along side the ball with his/her legs open) lightly pass the ball through player twos legs allowing player four to run onto the slowly moving ball and taking the shot. To increase this plays deceptiveness, still using the right footed shooter, have player three (the lefty) make a run on the opposite side of the actual pass as if he/she were going to shoot the ball. This slight bit of deception may be what you need to throw the goalie off and score. In full speed this play should have both shooters running to each side of the ball at the same time. One of the two players standing along side the ball passes it through the others legs, resulting in a nice slow pass and an open shot for one of your two shooters.

What to look for Coaches:

It is very important that the players passing the ball actually make it through the others legs. This may sound simple but practice, practice, practice. It is also very important that the passers don't hit the ball too hard or too far. The passes should be slow and only go 2 or 3 yards beyond the open legged player that they are passing through. This set piece can be very effective when executed properly. Remember to practice this drill over and over again. You only need to work with four players so you may want to have the rest of your team either doing something else, or creating a defensive wall as if it were a real game.
