ONE VS GOALIE (MLS STYLE

Place your athletes in the middle of the field in a single file line 30-50 yards (depending on age group) away from the goal. Each player should have their own ball at their feet standing one player in front of the next. The first player begins to dribble towards goal at a moderate pace. As he/she gets near the 18yd. box they must make a decision;do they shoot from this point or try and beat the goalie by dribbling by him/her. When practicing this drill it is important to make your athletes try both options. For the first few times make it mandatory for them to shoot from the 18 yd. box. Then, the next few times make it mandatory for them to try and dribble past the goalie. Eventually you should allow them to make their own mind and use which ever method they feel most comfortable with. After the athlete shoots the ball they should retrieve it and go to the back of the line. The next player begins when the goalie is set and ready.

What to look for Coaches: Although this is an offensive shooting drill, the first person I would like to mention is the goalie. It is extremely important that the goalie comes off of his/her line and cuts down the shooters angle. As the offensive player begins to dribble towards the goal, the goalie should be slowly coming out, in a crouched position with both of their hands out to their sides trying to be as BIG as they possibly can. The goalie should be no less than at the 15 yd. line (17-18 yds. would be perfect) when the offensive player is at the 18 yd line.By coming out of the goal, the goalie shrinks the goal and makes it much more difficult for a goal to be scored. It is also very important for the goalie to stay on his/her feet unless they are absolutely positive that they can slide and steal the ball from the offensive player. If the goalie goes down and can not get the ball, it’s an easy goal. The offensive players should be trying to literally pass the ball directly under one of the arms of the goalie. If they decide to dribble around the goalie, it is important that keep the ball on their outside foot, away from the goalie, not allowing him to swipe it.
