ONE ON ONE WITH GOALIE

Description of drill:
Separate your team into two groups. Place one group, in a single file line just to the outside right of the goal post. Place the second group of athletes approximately 25 yards. away from the middle of the goal mouth. All of the balls should be with the first group. The first player in group one knocks a ball out to the first player in group two. As the ball is in the air the player from group one charges after his pass and gets ready to defend the player that he passed to. The player in group two must trap and collect the ball and then try and beat the defender in a one on one battle. As soon as the offensive player gets an open shot, he/she is to take it and try and score on the goalie. Repeat the drill again with the next two players in line one and two. This drill can be modified to create 2 vs 1 or 3 vs 2 very easily.

What to look for Coaches: This drill is great because it incorporates a lot of different things. If you want to work on chipping the ball you can have the player from group one chip it to the player in group two. If you want to work on driving the ball you can have him drive it. If you want to work on firm passing or throw-ins you can have the player in group one do whatever you want to work on to get player two the ball. This drill also increases players ability to perform when it’s only them and an opponent (1 vs. 1). Defensively and offensively this is a benefit. Finally and most importantly this drill helps with shooting. It is important to get good quick shots off right after beating a defender. The offensive players are encouraged to
shoot as soon as they see the light of day. For a successful drill, make sure that everyone is going all out and playing at game speed. If a one on one battle takes to long and no shot or steal results, end it. Tell the players to practice this like it were a game, and they will only have about 5 seconds to actually beat someone and get a shot off before some other defender comes over to help.
