PENALTY SHOTS FOR ACCURACY

Set one cone exactly two yards inside the right goal post. Now set another cone exactly two yards inside the left goal post. Place your athletes in a line along the edge of the penalty box, with their soccer ball at their feet. One at a time have a player place his/her ball on the penalty spot (12 yds from the center of the goal mouth) and take a shot. Their goal is to place the ball between one of the cones indicated and corresponding post. After all of your athletes have gone through one time, add a goal keeper to the try and save their shots. It’s easy to place a ball in an empty net. Putting a goalie inside changes everything. Make everyone shoot a couple of times then make a competition out of it. See who can score the most goals. One point for a goal and an extra point if they score between the cones and goal posts.
COACHES EMPHASIS: Coaches should be looking for solid strikes of the ball. Athletes do not have to hit the ball as hard as they can but the ball must be hit firmly and placed in a corner. To increase the pressure of each shot and to make it more realistic, have a whistle handy and make them go through the entire routine of waiting for the whistle and then shooting. Also, you should emphasize the fact that each shooter should have their shots location picked out well before they make their run at the ball. To increase difficulty, make the athletes tell the goalie where they are shooting the ball. A proper shot can not be saved by a goalie even if he/she knows the direction of the kick. NOTE: Obviously the goalie will know the direction of the ball, so don’t let him/her cheat to one side or the other to much for this part.
