SIDE TO SIDE PASSING

Separate your athletes into groups of three. Two athletes should be directly across from eachother approximately 20 yards apart. The third athlete should be in the middle of the two. Each of the first two athletes identified should have a ball at their feet. When the coach gives the command, the player in the middle must run towards one of his teammates, calling for the ball and showing him/herself. The end player passes the ball to the middleman’s feet. The middle man traps it and then passes it back. As soon as he/she has passed the ball back the middleman must turn and run towards his/her other teammate. When they get six or so yards away they should be receiving a pass from that end player, trapping it and then passing it back. The middle person must continue running back and forth, receiving and passing balls for 30 seconds. He/she should be running at a quick pace and trying to maintain good speed and quality touches throughout the entire drill. When the thirty seconds is up, he/she switches with one of the end players and recovers. Continue this drill until all three players have been the middle person.
What to look for Coaches: It is very important that the middle person works hard. They should be really fatigued towards the end of their session and should really have to concentrate to make good traps and quality passes. To increase the difficulty of this drill make the middle person use only one touch. This way he/she must concentrate even more. Another variation to this drill would be to have the end players hold and toss the balls into the middle person. The middle person can either bring the ball down to his/her feet or directly volley pass the ball back to their teammate.
