ASK HARKESY - SEPTEMBER 2000

Q: What drills would you recommend to help players learn to play with their head up?
Harkesy: It is a fact of the game that some players play better with their heads up than others. At every level you can see those players that take advantage of clearly seeing the field. Often times they roam the midfield. Simply stated, the best way to help players get better at keeping their head up, is to constantly remind them to get their eyes on their next move- i.e. off of the ground!
Passing and dribbling drills should be run entirely with the players’ heads up. Emphasize a one look rule: Watch the ball into possession, and then their head comes immediately up to see the field and recognize their options. Combine this rule into other drills as a simple way of reminding them of good habits. Please remember that it isn’t just drills that make a player better. Sure, they help, but constant work in game situations will help the player become more confident and comfortable on the field. Let the players play, while emphasizing the need to see the field. When a player gets more and more comfortable controlling the ball, they will truly recognize the value of seeing the field. Coaches, try to keep a good balance, of fun with hard work and concentration.
Good Luck,
Harkesy
