ASK HARKESY - AUGUST 2000

Q: Is there a way to coach players on anticipation?
Harkesy: Coaching player’s anticipation is very hard to do. It is something inside the player and some naturally anticipate better than others. This doesn’t mean that you don’t work on it everyday. For instance, try to anticipate the next play, such as a ball dropping down in the midfield... work on playing the second ball. Run through it many times, with a great deal of emphasis on timing. Strikers can gain great advantage over defenders by anticipating the ball coming into the box.
This means that a player must first have their timing down correctly, but also know their teammates tendencies and talents. All these skills come easier after you learn to read the game and how it flows, and recognize the skills of teammates and opponents.
Really, the only way to truly coach anticipation is to have your players play: PRACTICE. Experience will build anticipation better than any drill or exercise.
