ASK HARKESY - JULY 2000

Q: What drill would you recommend to help players increase their foot speed?

Harkesy: Placing players in close, tight situations usually helps the players increase foot speed, by forcing them to play the ball quicker with one or two touch passes. High-pressure situations enable the player to play quicker, thus increase foot speed. Play small-sided games in smaller areas. Footwork over hurdles and lateral movement between cones helps as well. We do this at the Revolution with our conditioning coach in the morning before we train.

Q: What drills would you recommend to help improve a team’s movement off the ball?

Harkesy: Movement off the ball can be improved with various exercises. Put players in game situations during practice. Always have the players move five yards when they pass the ball. Obviously, this will feel strange at first. It is practice, so exaggerate your movement. Make sure that when the players move after the pass, that they are not just running anywhere. They must run to space or in support of the next pass.

GOOD LUCK eteamerz!
