ball thru hoop.gif
The Southern Ontario Renegades came into the Ontario Cup Provincial Championship as the #3 seed in Division I of the Junior Women's draw. Upon completion of the weekend, the Renegades returned to their rightful place as the #1 team in the Province as they won the 2003 GOLD Medal with victories over #6 Toronto 5-0, #4 Windsor A.A., #1 Waterloo Wildhawks and #2 Niagara Rangers in the final.

Julie Anderson was named tournament Most Valuable Player in a close decision over S.O.B.C. teammates, future Miami Hurricane Amy Audibert and future Virginia Cavalier Alisa Wulff as these 3 players dominated the Provincial Championships.

Full results are posted in the SOBC scores section.

5-1 record in the 2002 Outback International tournament.

At the Outback International tournament in Altamonte Springs, Florida, the 2002 summer Renegades finished the event with a very successful 5-1 record. S.O.B.C. was the only International team participating this year in the 10 team event.

Thursday, July 11 saw the beginning of the event as the Renegades played against the local Florida team, F.A.A.B. in their first game ever as a unit. A quick start by our run and gun team put S.O.B.C. ahead with a 14 point halftime lead that F.A.A.B. could not overcome. Ashley Watt, a 5' 9" shooting guard from London, ON. led the first half charge by scoring all of her 10 points. The final score was a lopsided 71-40 tally. Miami Hurricane signee, 6' 2" forward, Tatjana Marincic led with 13 points while 6' 3" center Amy Audibert chipped in with 11.

Game 2 of the tourney saw the Bay City All-Stars from Tampa, Florida as the opponent. Another quick start by the inside power of Marincic who finished with 12 points to lead the team and Audibert, who added 10, proved to be too much to handle. Outstanding 3 point shooting from 5' 9" Waterloo, ON. native Ashley MacSporran and 5' 7" Jacqui Precious from Fonthill, ON. pushed the Renegades to a 55-38 victory.

Friday's games began with S.O.B.C. playing against the All-Stars Team BALL from Florida. In this tough battle, the Renegades prevailed with an all-round excellent team effort to come away with the 55-41 victory in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. Marincic led all scorers again with 10 points. MacSporran (9 points), Audibert (8 points & 11 rebounds) along with a trio of 7 point scorers, 5' 7" Dina Atanas along with the 5' 11" forward duo from Windsor, ON., Andrea Eansor and Jessie Plante contributed to the victory.

The final game of pool play saw the most ridiculous group of players as the opponents. This game was out of hand from the beginning as the Lady Dreamers of Florida were trash talking and taunting from the opening tip-off. It was the WORST group of individuals that S.O.B.C. has ever encountered...this team pushed players from behind into the stands, ran people over as if it was a football game and even dove at our players legs to try and tackle them once they were beaten. Although the first half was fairly calm, the second was a joke with the 2 teams combining for 15 total points. S.O.B.C. came away with the 33-27 victory and a 4-0 record in pool play. Marincic led in scoring with 9 points with 7 from Audibert. 6' 1" forward Natalie Thomas and 5' 7" Mississauga, ON native Kayla Butler each had an excellent game by hauling in 9 and 7 rebounds respectively against this dirty team.

Saturday brought on the quarter finals of the event. The opposition was provided by a very talented team from Georgia who had the trash talking Lady Dreamers in the stands cheering for them as they had already been eliminated from the event. Marincic nabbed the first double double of the event with 10 and 10, while the London, ON pair of 5' 9" guard Candice Borrows and Watt each chipped in with 6 points. 6' 3" center from Toronto, ON. Elanor Welmers provided a big lift off the bench by grabbing 5 rebounds in limited action in the 44-38 victory.

An all-star team comprised of local Florida junior college players and Division I scholarship signees were up next in the semi-finals. Some serious "home cooking" provided by the referees aided the cause as the Renegades came up on the short end of the 52-45 final. Audibert dominated the inside by scoring 14 and grabbing 7 rebounds. Help was provided by Marincic and Eansor who each added 7 points.

The tournament was a resounding success for S.O.B.C. as all 11 unsigned players were scouted by numerous N.C.A.A. coaches who inquired about their availability/interest in attending an American Educational Institution. For complete Florida stats, please access the summer stats page.

S.O.B.C. waltzes through T.A.K.E. tournament.
1st.gif

The third summer 2001 U.S.A. trip, this one to Erie, Pennsylvania, proved to be a great success for the S.O.B.C. 2001-2002 Renegades squad. This event held at the Family Sports Park was a four game tournament held July 27-29.

Game #1 pitted S.O.B.C against a completely overmatched Ohio squad. After a slow start in their first effort, the Renegades exploded in the second half, holding their opponents to 5 points on their way to a 59-24 victory. Senior forwards Tina Flynn and Claire Meadows led the balanced attack with 9 points apiece.

Saturday morning saw S.O.B.C. soundly defeat a team from Pennsylvania 63-34. Senior forward Tatjana Marincic led the way scoring 14 points while Meadows continued her excellent offensive play adding 12.

The Saturday evening contest was a tougher match-up as the team from Girard, Pennsylvania, who went 31-2 this past year, provided the opposition. Trailing at half, S.O.B.C. decided to step up the intensity that the game Girard squad could not match. They were outscored 39-14 as S.O.B.C. went on to a 60-37 victory. The barrage was led by Marincic who double doubled with a 10 point 11 rebound effort. Leading the scoring for the second time was the senior small forward duo of Meadows notching 13 and Flynn with 11.

The final game on Sunday morning saw the Brick City squad from Detroit as the opponent. S.O.B.C. strayed from the norm of slow starts and jumped on the Michigan team from the opening tip. The final score of 69-32 was not as close as the score indicates as the Renegades were firing on all cylinders. Meadows and Marincic again led the way with 11 and 10 points while senior forward Carolyn Crnac also chipped in with 10. Flynn and senior forward Jennifer Hitchman added 9 apiece.

The Renegades outscored their opposition 251-127 in the four game event and were not really challenged all weekend. The Pennsylvania trip ended a successful summer of U.S.A. tourneys for S.O.B.C. with an overall record of 19-3.

Mid-West Grand National Champions
button national champs.gif

Our 2001 summer graduating travelling team returned from AIM HIGH in Lansing, Michigan as the Mid-West Grand National Champions. The 5 members of our O.B.A. Bronze medal team combined with 3 Florida 2001 members, 1 Florida 2000 member and 3 new players to run the table and win all 8 games on their way to the Championship. This was an amazing feat as we did not practice and many of the players met for the first time during our warm-up for game #1.

The first casualty along the road to the Championship was a seriously overmatched Michigan Lady in Blue squad. Although S.O.B.C. drove straight to the gym from Canada, the Michigan squad was no match in the 73-16 victory. James Madison University bound guard Ann Ching, led the team with 12 points, while newcomer power forward Lyndsay Munro, who will be attending West Florida University in September, chipped in with 10.

Game #2 of the day, saw S.O.B.C. butt heads with the Under 19 Provincial team from Quebec. In a tough battle, S.O.B.C. came out on top with a 49-36 victory. Tatjana Marincic, a senior to be, led the charge with a big game, leading S.O.B.C. in points(9), rebounds(12), blocks(2) and steals(3). University of Waterloo bound forward Julie Devenny also had 9 points while senior to be, forward Danielle D'Ettore from Sault Ste. Marie scored 8 and grabbed 7 rebounds.

The third game of the day pitted S.O.B.C. against the Toledo Shock. This was a run and gun affair from the start with 5 S.O.B.C. players scoring double figures in the 86-57 victory. Leading the charge was a double double of 13 and 10 from Devenny. Other double digit scorers were Marincic with 13, Ching with 12, Munro had 11 and 10 from Barton Community College bound forward Laura Irvine.

Sunday began with another easy game against a weak squad from Michigan. The final tally was 60-16 for S.O.B.C. Leading scorers were 2 members of our Florida 2001 squad. Junior guard Dina Atanas had 12, while senior forward Claire Meadows scored 11.

The Quebec under 17 Provincial team provided the oppostion for game #5. In a spirited affair, S.O.B.C. came away with a relatively easy 64-45 victory in a game that was not as close as the score indicates. The twin towers, established in Florida 2000, of Marincic and Devenny led the way with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Grand Rapids, Michigan provided S.O.B.C. with their toughest game of the tourney in game #6. This team was on fire from 3 point land as everything they threw up went in. S.O.B.C. built up a big lead and then held off the charge to claim a 77-74 victory. Senior to be, guard Tara Poulin, stepped up for S.O.B.C. as she refused to back down from the in your face trash talking Michigan squad. Leading the charge of 4 double digit scorers was Marincic who notched a double double of 12 points to go along with her 13 rebounds. Munro led the team in scoring with 13, while Irvine had 11 and Laurentian bound point guard Crystal Blanchard chipped in with 10.

In an exhibition game immediately following the tough Grand Rapids battle, the Quebec under 19 team exacted some revenge with a 57-52 victory. It was the 4th game of the day and 2nd back to back affair for S.O.B.C., while Quebec only had one game prior to this return battle. Marincic showed her offensive dominance once again, missing only 2 shots, while scoring 16 points.

Game #7 of the tournament was against the Michigan Knights. This was another team that was seriously overmatched, yet never gave up. S.O.B.C. had a huge half time lead of 32-8 and cruised to a 51-25 victory. The only double digit scorer was Munro with 10 points. The final game of the tournament had the Chicago Demons as the opposition. Devenny and Munro also had big offensive games in the 58-47 victory. Both stepped up to fill the void caused by the shin splint injury to Marincic. Munro scored her tournament best of 16 points on 6-7 shooting and 4-6 foul shots, while Devenny only missed 2 shots to score 13.

Four members of our squad were selected to the all-tournament team. Tatjana Marincic, Claire Meadows, Ann Ching and defensive specialist Desiree Bacchus who will be attending Colby Community College in Kansas come September.

This event capped off the careers of 4 senior S.O.B.C. members. Guard Ann Ching will be off to Virginia, while forward Laura Irvine and guard Desiree Bacchus both move to Kansas. The fourth member leaving, also for Kansas to Colby Community College along with Bacchus, Alex Kwiecinska is an original S.O.B.C. member as she stands second on the all-time S.O.B.C. games played list.

S.O.B.C. finishes 3rd place in Florida.
3rd
The 2001 Premier summer travelling team won the Bronze Medal at the Outback International Shootout held at Seminole Community College just outside of Orlando, Florida. Aside from the American teams, this event also included junior national teams from Denmark, Finland, Poland and the under 17 & 19 champion Swedish teams.

On Friday, July 6 the under 19 Swedish team was the first opponent. It was a slow start for S.O.B.C. as Sweden just came off their national championship and kept the game close. Sweden hit a last second shot to send the game into overtime where S.O.B.C., led by junior forward Natalie Thomas from Guelph, exploded with 17 points in the 5 minute session to come away with a 61-50 victory. Leading the way for S.O.B.C. was junior guard Dina Atanas from Brantford with 13 points. Burlington native senior forward Tina Flynn had 12 points while senior forward from Mississauga, Tatjana Marincic chipped in with 10.

Round robin games on Saturday continued with game one against an A.A.U. team from Wellington, Florida. After a slow first half, S.O.B.C. jumped out to a fast start and defeated the Florida squad 68-51. Wellington had no answer to a dominating performance by Marincic. She led the squad with 22 points. The second game of the day pitted S.O.B.C. against the eventual silver medalists the Orlando WildThings. In a tough battle S.O.B.C. won 48-45. Marincic led the way again with 13 points.

Daytona Beach Community College was the final opponent for S.O.B.C. in round robin play. The size of the defending Florida Community College champions proved to be too much as they held on for a hard fought 52-46 victory. Leading the way for S.O.B.C. again was Marincic with 18 points. S.O.B.C. suffered an injury set back as 6th man Tara Poulin from Welland was thrown to the floor. She was diagnosed with a mild concussion after spending 3 hours in a Florida hospital.

Sunday's games were single elimination with many division one scouts in attendance. A tough scrappy team from Osceola, Florida provided the opposition. S.O.B.C. struggled all game as nerves took over yet still came away with a 40-37 victory. Marincic continued her dominating ways with 16 points leading S.O.B.C. to victory. Help was provided by senior forward from Brantford, Claire Meadows, who came off the bench with an outstanding performance as she scored 10 points.

After a short break and a team meeting, S.O.B.C.'s next opponent was the heavily favoured Jacksonville Sisters. No Jacksonville opponent had come within 20 points all tournament due to their serious full court pressure defence. Junior guard Atanas had a phenomenal game, wowing the U.S. scouts by shredding the full court defence to the point that for the first time Jacksonville removed their vaunted press. Flynn led S.O.B.C in the 45-33 victory with 9 points, senior Burlington forward Carolyn Crnac had her best effort scoring 8 while Thomas chipped in with 7.

In the semi-final game, S.O.B.C. ran into the powerful Poland squad who easily defeated everyone in their path on their march to the Gold Medal. The final score was 52-41 in Poland's favour which proved to be their closest margin of victory in the tournament. Marincic, the talk of the whole event, closed out an outstanding tournament with 12 points against the huge Polish front line. Thomas also had a strong offensive game with 8 points.

A fine performance that deserves mention is that of senior point guard Sharon Gabuat from Mississauga. In the 7 games that S.O.B.C. played, the starting guard had only 3 turnovers while distributing 16 assists.

The event was a great success for all the S.O.B.C. players with respect to the exposure they received from the U.S. scouts and their performance on the court. The scouts were all amazed at how well this team has gelled in the 6 weeks they have been together as well as how hard the kids played all weekend.

S.O.B.C. wins Bronze Medal.
The 2001 club basketball season Provincial Championship came to a close this past weekend (May 4-6) and the Southern Ontario Basketball Club in their second year of existence came away with another medal. Although it wasn't the Gold like last year, it is the second consecutive year that the team has won a place on the podium.

S.O.B.C. began defence of their crown on Friday, May 4th in pool play against the #7 ranked Ottawa Xcels. The game was a rout as Ottawa seemed sluggish in the 65-40 loss. The game was over by halftime as S.O.B.C. had built up a 33-16 lead. Senior forward Laura Irvine led the charge with 14 points with a perfect game from the field.

Their opponent for game 2 was the #6 seeded Toronto Cyclones on Saturday morning. S.O.B.C. started slowly as usual, but had the lead at half and ended up winning 60-46. Senior forward Andrea Clarke was on fire in the first half, scoring 13 points. She finished with 18 to lead the squad. Also in double figures were senior guard Ann Ching with 12 points and junior forward Tatjana Marincic who double doubled with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The second seed Sudbury O.P.P. was the opponent for their final pool game. The winner avoided playing the #1 seed, Transway, in the semi finals. The sheer size of Sudbury was too much to handle as they came away with the 60-50 victory. Junior forward Marincic led S.O.B.C. with yet another double double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. S.O.B.C. suffered a big loss as senior guard 6th man Desiree Bacchus went down with a concussion.

The semi finals pitted #3 S.O.B.C. against the hometown favourites, #1 Transway. This game should have been for the championship as S.O.B.C. had the only legitimate shot at upsetting the prohibitive favourites. A slow start and long stretches of poor basketball by both teams kept the score low at half. Transway's pressure proved too much as they came away with a 54-40 victory in a game that was much closer than the score indicates. Questionable scorekeeping hindered S.O.B.C.'s quest for the upset. Senior forward Clarke played her best game of the season before she went down with an ankle injury that knocked her out for the rest of the tournament. Andrea double doubled with 15 points and 10 rebounds and was easily the best player on the floor.

The bronze medal game had #4 Burlington Panthers as the opposition. S.O.B.C. missing spark plugs Bacchus and Clarke started out slowly as did Burlington. The halftime score of 24-23 in S.O.B.C.'s favour showed that both teams were deflated from their semi final losses earlier in the day. Senior forward Irvine led the way with 12 points in the 54-36 victory. Senior guard Alex Kwiecinska played her best game of the season, picking up the slack for her injured teammates.

The team M.V.P. for the tournament without a doubt was Kentucky Wesleyan University bound forward Andrea Clarke as she rightfully earned the Toronto Raptors fair play award.

The bronze medal brought to a close an excellent season for the 2001 Premier squad, as they finished the year with a record of 32 wins and 9 losses.

N.A.Y.B. Mid-West Region NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
jam woman.gif
S.O.B.C., the Ontario Provincial Premier Women Division I Champions, can now add Mid-West Region National Champions to their resumes. This N.A.Y.B. event, held in Toledo, Ohio was the capper on an excellent season and high school careers for many of the participants.

Six members of the Provincial Champions, along with seven new players went 13-0 on their way to the championship.

The final pitted the Canadians against the Ohio Vipers, a strong A.A.U. team. S.O.B.C. waltzed through the preliminary rounds with a 10-0 record securing the #1 seed for the playoffs while the Vipers only lost once to gain the #2 seed.

The final started quickly for S.O.B.C. as they jumped out to an early lead that the Vipers could not overcome. The twin towers of 6'4" Shannon Presswood and 6'2" Meghan Eves caused too many mismatches for the game Ohio squad.

Tough full court man to man defence enabled the eventual champions to keep the Vipers off balance on their way to a 48-25 victory. Eves led S.O.B.C. with 14 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists, while Presswood chipped in with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 6 blocks. Tatjana Marincic, Jovana Topisirovic and Ann Ching also had strong games for the champions.

The National Championship brought to a close the high school careers of 3 integral parts of the Provincial championship squad. Center Shannon Presswood is off to Wilmington, North Carolina to continue her basketball career as a Seahawk, while Swing Forward Meghan Eves and Point Guard Kate Walker will stay together and head to Sudbury, Ontario to play at Laurentian University.

2000 PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS!!!

The Southern Ontario Basketball Club Premier Women's team won the Provincial Gold Medal at the year end tournament in Ottawa, Ontario.

Coming in with a 27-8 record as the #5 seed, S.O.B.C. had to defeat #1 seeded Transway, #4 Niagara Rangers, #6 Windsor and #8 Pelham before beating the #2 seed Weston Spartans in overtime to capture the biggest prize in high school girls basketball.

Tournament Most Valuable Player, Meghan Eves from Barrie North C.I., helped lead the charge as S.O.B.C. clawed their way to a 5-0 record and the Championship.

MVP runners-up Shannon Presswood from Orangeville D.S.S., who averaged a double double of 22 points and 12 rebounds for the tournament, and Tatjana Marincic, a grade 11 student at T.L.Kennedy in Mississauga, helped seal the victory against Weston in the final with monster games.

Kate Walker from Barrie North had an exceptional tournament at the point guard position, playing over 160 minutes in the 5 games and committing only 8 turnovers. Dawn Martin also from Barrie North, Donna Fantauzzi from Cardinal Newman R.C.S.S. in Scarborough and Alex Kwiecinska from Port Credit S.S. in Mississauga also had strong tournaments for the champions.

S.O.B.C. had a tougher road, #1 Transway and #4 Niagara, to reach the Championship game. In the other bracket, the Spartans waltzed through the early rounds and survived a semi-final overtime game with #1 Transway.

In the final, Weston led for the majority of the second half until S.O.B.C. battled back and tied it at 70, when point guard Walker scored on a driving pull up jumper on her only shot of the second half that sent the game to overtime. An early 2nd half ankle injury to starting shooting guard Kwiecinska knocked her out for the rest of the tournament.

In overtime, the inside twin towers of Marincic and Presswood were too much to handle as they scored at will. MVP Eves, a 6'2 post player took over the point guard duties, created major defensive mis-matches and pounded the ball inside to her fellow towers who finished with 24 points each as well as 13 and 12 rebounds respectively. Eves finished the game with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

S.O.B.C. took a 79-77 lead with 15 seconds remaining and then forced a critical turnover with 4 seconds left. Presswood proceeded to hit 2 foul shots to help seal the win. A last desperation effort by Weston was thwarted by Marincic as she tipped the inbounds pass that Martin chased down to preserve the Gold Medal.

The underdog #5 seed finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark to win the Gold and completed a successful season with an overall record of 32-8. On their march to the championship in Ottawa, they avenged losses from the regular season by beating 5 of the Premier teams that had previously defeated them.
