Summer Travel Baseball 2009

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Summer Baseball Program?
South Orange Maplewood Baseball provides an opportunity for interested baseball players, ages 8-15, to participate in several summer travel leagues. Teams are selected through a competitive tryout process in early spring with league play from mid-June through July 31st. These teams will practice 2-4 times per week and play approximately 15 league games within Essex, Union and/or Morris County. Additional tournament play is also possible.

What is the difference between the Summer Baseball program and the spring recreation league?
The spring recreation program is open to all children, regardless of ability. Teams for the summer program are selected during competitive tryouts. Players are expected to have an above average level of proficiency in order to participate. All games are played to win and playing time is solely at the discretion of the coach based on a player’s ability, attitude, attendance and game conditions.

How many teams will there be?
Our goal is to field two teams, an A and a B team, for ages 8 through 13 and one 15U team. The final number of teams selected will depend on the number of qualified players and coaching volunteers in each age category. Teams will be composed of 12-15 players.

Where will they play?
The A teams will play in league play locally as well as some tournament play. The B teams will play in the New Providence Green League (NPGL).

What are the eligibility requirements ?

Team eligibility is based on the child’s age on April 30, 2009. There will be no “playing up” on the summer teams.

How and when are players selected?
Players are selected after competitive tryouts. The tryout schedules have been changed many times due to rainouts.  To see the most current schedule for tryouts, please see below or visit the Home Page of this site.

What can I expect if my child makes the team?
The summer baseball program was formed to allow a child who has a real desire to play baseball to learn and improve at the next level. Coaches will focus on improving your child’s skills, reinforcing sound fundamentals, teaching sportsmanship and stressing the importance of teamwork and commitment. Our goal is for all children participating in the summer program to come away from the experience better players and have fun in the process.

What is the time commitment required?
Practices will begin following team selection in early May. Practices will be held 2-4 days/nights per week at the discretion of the coach and based on field availability. The season begins in mid-June and runs through July 31st. Teams typically play three games per week. With additional tournament games and rain-outs, more than 3 games per week are possible. Games generally start at 6:00 pm on weekdays and players are required to be at the field at least 1/2 hour before game time. Players are expected to attend all practices and games and commit for the entire season. If you are planning vacation during this period, you must make the coach aware at tryouts. Players who fail to comply with this request will be ineligible for summer play the following year.

What is the fee for the Summer Baseball program?
The fee for participation is $160.00 per child.
