2009 Season Completed
The best season in St. Michael's Softball history has ended. We finished in 1st place during the regular season, with an undefeated record of 7-0. We finished in 2nd place during the playoffs, losing our only game of the year, to finish with an overall record of 8-1. We know in our minds and hearts that we truly were the best team in the league this year, and that's how I'm remembering this season. We were the champions in my book.
With the end of any season come goodbyes. This season, especially so, with our large class of 8th grade student athletes. It will be hard to replace the leadership and experience of our 8th graders, but I'm sure the team will be fine as the years go on.
Playing softball for your school team is a special experience that not many girls get to enjoy. There is a certain pride in knowing you represent your school on the softball field and a special camaraderie that grows among the team members. I hope you all learned a little bit more about softball and had a fun time in the process.
To the departing 8th graders, thanks for the many good years you gave this team and this school. To Angela Busichio, Brianna Fleming, Geanna Moreno, Mae Rose Adubato, Jessica Nesi, Annabelle Hartnett and Caileigh Mulligan, we'll miss your experience and leadership, and we wish you well in high school. You are a great bunch of kids; it just won't be the same without you guys around.
To the underclassmen who will be the leaders of the team over the next few years — Lexi Mironski, Julie Byrne, Laura Sabatino and Samantha Vincencio, we wish you good luck and the same level of success that we achieved this season. To Victoria Mettlen, good luck as you leave St. Michael's and continue your activities in the Cranford schools.
As for me, this is it. After coaching the SMS softball team for the past 10 years, I bid farewell to the program. To all the girls that have played for me over the years, I thank you for the many fond memories, commend you on your achievements and wish you only the brightest futures. To all the parents, grandparents, friends and classmates who have supported our teams over the years, I thank you for your patience, understanding and encouragement.
And one final word to the team of 2009: Keep your heads up and look forward to the many things that life holds in store for you. You are young; enjoy your youth and always remember this special team and the special memories we built together. After all, there is no one else like you.
Thank you all.

Warriors win semi-final; advance to championship game
The SMS Warriors beat St. Mary/St. Elizabeth Academy (SME) 6-1 on Tuesday, June 16, to advance to the championship game against Holy Spirit on Wednesday. What a game! This was one of our most complete and consistent games all season, with timely hitting, great pitching and clutch defense. The highlight of he game, and, for that mater, the season so far, was an unbelieveable, over-the-shoulder catch by left fielder Caileigh Mulligan, which saved a few runs and killed an early rally by SME. The catch prompted a spontaneous celebration with SMS teammates who mobbed Caileigh in on-the-spot!
With one game left in the season, the Warriors are back in action on Wednesday to play for the championship against Holy Spirit. Go Warriors!!!
NEWS UPDATE FOR TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2009
I just received an e-mail from the Archdiocese of Newark CYO office. In summary, it says that we have won the regular season championship of the league this year. Congratulations! I can't tell you how proud I am of all the girls this year. What a season -- undefeated, and league champs!!
The other news is the schedule. I had requested that we not play on Friday due to the Pool Party, however, we are in no position to dictate the schedule at this point, and we have been scheduled to play on Friday. The good news is that if we win the next two games, we are playoff champs, too.
SMS wins rain-shortened game 2-1; finishes in first place
Before the skies opened up on Tuesday, June 2, the St. Michael's Warriors were leading St. Theresa's 2-1 after two complete innings. With the approval of St. Theresa's, the league has decided that St.Michael's will be credited with a victory. This leaves us undefeated at 7-0, and likely not making up the St. Gen's rainout. This means that we have finished the regular season in first place. Congratulations Warriors! You all worked so hard and deserve this honor. Our work is not over, however. To make this season even more special, we need to continue our mission. Beginning next week, we will start the playoffs. I will keep you posted on when we will be playing. In the meantime, I want to let you know how proud I am of all the girls on this team. Keep up the good work, and let's not rest until we hang that championhip banner in our school's gym!
SMS beats Holy Trinity for sixth in row
The SMS Warriors overcame some early shaky defense with an offensive outburst that secured a 14-10 victory over Holy Trinity on June 1. The Warriors straightened out their defensive problems and held Holy Trinity in check the rest of the way. We continued on our offensive roll by scoring 14 runs; the Warrior squad is averaging 12 runs per game this season.
Five in a row!
The SMS softball Warriors won their fifth game in a row on Tuesday, May 26, by beating St. Bart's by a score of 14-4. Another strong pitching performance by Angela Busichio, assisted by some solid defense held the potent St. Bart's bats in check all day. Brianna Fleming provided the defensive highlight with a game-ending catch in centerfield. Offensively, Brianna contributed to the win with her aggressive baserunning and scored three runs on the day. Angela also scored three runs in the win and knocked in four runs with a single, double and a triple. The Warriors are back in action on Monday June 1.
Four down; four to go!
The SMS Softball Warriors remained undefeated this year with an impressive 12-8 victory Friday, May 22, over a strong St. John's team. The hitting was lead by Victoria Mettlen and Annabelle Hartnett, who delivered two home runs on the day. Great job to all. Have a restful and enjoyable holiday weekend, since we get right back into action on Tuesday, against St. Bart's.
Warriors win third in row
The St. Michael's girls softball team is now 3-0 to begin the season. We overcame a slow start to get back to our game and beat Holy Spirit of Union 12-2 in a five-inning contest on Friday, May 15. We continued our timely hitting, solid fielding and strong pitching in the win, which featured Mae Rose's mad dash around the basepaths. Let's keep up the good work as we approach our next game on Friday, May 22, against St. John's on field #3. Because of the heavy schedule with the play this week, we will not have any practice or games before Friday.
Warriors 2-0 to begin season
The St. Mike's softball team won its second game of the year on Wednesday, April 29, in an exciting, come-from-behind, extra-inning game. The game was tied after seven innings, and The Academy of St. Mary/St. Elizabeth took a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning. Victoria Mettlen scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, and Jess Nesi's clutch, two-out hit drove in Gianna Moreno all the way from 1st base with the winning run. Way to go, team; we never give up!
SMS Warriors win first game of season
What a great way to start off our season. St. Mike's beat St. Agnes 14-2 on Monday, April 27. All the girls did a great job in the field, at bat and on the basepaths. The team was led by the pitching and hitting of Angela Busichio who had a single, a double and a triple, and drove in five runs. She also shut down the St. Agnes Ravens by giving up only two hits and not allowing a walk to their lineup. The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, April 29 against The Academy of St. Mary/St Elizabeth.
