SMS Boys Basketball
Since 1993 I have had the pleasure of coaching the SMS Boys Basketball team. It has been a learning experience for me as well as my players. Every year, the season leaves me a little better idea how to approach the next one. I have been blessed with many remarkable young men. During the past 11 years alot of memories have been made. Some that jump out are; Kyle Stephenson hitting a layup at the end of regulation to send my very first game into overtime (on an out of bounds play) which we won. The 94-95 team running a perfect out of bounds play, to Chicarian Lee(with 1 second remaining) that enabled us to go into overtime and beat Clayton by one. The 97-98 team that put on a wild rally to come from 10 down, capped by a Jeremy Rouse's 3, in the final 3 minutes against Meadow. Jamie Wilson (98-99) coming back from a broken leg in soccer to hit a three on an out of bounds play (the only 3 seconds he played all season)...we called a time out and took him right back out of the game. The 99-00 team had their back against the walls going into the Selma game. Two starters out for breaking team rules and the 6th man out injured. After the game started with Selma going up 8-0 we settled down to play one of the most inspiring games I have ever been involved in. We won by one on a basket by Darius Lee with 5 seconds left in regulation. In 2006, the year we went undefeated, we held Riverwood to 1 basket in the second half of both games COMBINED! That is a total of 3 points in two halves of play. They finished in second that year, so that tells you how good our defense was! The list could probably go on forever. As you can tell I like out of bounds plays. You can score 4 to 5 baskets a game on these plays. So we practice them hard! When your team only scores 35-40 points a game then that is 25% of your offense! Practice time well spent! Below is a list of every player that has played for me.
