Smoke OF Mike Sansoe Drafted by San Diego Padres

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's senior centerfielder Mike Sansoe was drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday afternoon, going 548 overall to the San Diego Padres, making him the third Saint Mary's player drafted on the day. Saint Mary's junior Bryan Byrne and fall signee Dylan Johnston were drafted earlier in the day.

Sansoe, from Walnut Creek, CA, raised his stock his senior year, having a break out season, while being named to the Second Team All-West Coast Conference.

"It feels good. It's been a lifelong dream to get a chance to play at the professional level," Sansoe said. "To comeback under a new coach and play to my potential was a good way to end my career."

Sansoe's career season starts with his team-leading .352 batting average and a team-leading seven home runs. Sansoe also scored 35 runs, had 11 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI, 11 walks and six steals.

The 6-0, 190 pound right handed hitting Sansoe was one of the fastest on the team and his three triples led the West Coast Conference. Sansoe also shows excellent range in centerfield, another plus for the senior.

1999 Smoke Catcher John Baker One Step Away

John for the AAA Athletics
Former Smoke (1999) and De La Salle player John Baker went on to have an excellent career at Cal Berkeley. He then was drafted in the 4th round by the Oakland Athletics. He is one step away from being the future Oakland A's catcher and many think he will be there by 2006.

From the Scout.com Website: "Baker had a 2003 campaign that was very similar to Nick Swisher's, but it went unnoticed by critics of the A's minor league system. Baker was raking in 2003 at Kane County before being promoted to Midland to replace an injured Jeremy Brown. In Midland, Baker posted an OPS under .600 in 150 AB for Midland. Baker was back at Midland to start 2004 and had an incredibly consistent season hitting .280 with 15 HR. He then saw another in-season promotion, this time to Sacramento, but unlike last year, Baker took advantage of the promotion and hit .408 in 49 AB for the RiverCats. He is now seen as a potential starting catcher for the A's as soon as 2006."

Coach Joel Kaufman had the pleasure of visiting with John at the Oakland A's Spring training camp in 2004. "John is still the same nice kid he was as when he played for us after his senior year in High School. What always stood out about John was his desire, work ethic (always sweaty), and leadership." John actually was a 1st baseman for De La Salle and the Smoke needed another catcher with the difficult schedule and John stepped back there and the rest is history. He led the Smoke in batting average, homers and rbi's in the grueling Connie Mack League schedule. The Smoke finished in 2nd place and John was one of two players selected (by Connie Mack rules) to go on to the Western Regionals.

Congratulations to John Baker on all that he has achieved and maybe we can get some better seats to A's games soon.

You never Know What Position You will Play in College

Smoke 2nd Baseman Daniel Kemper ended up playing centerfield at Santa Barbara. If you have a chance to learn more than one position it makes you more valuable to the college. Smoke CF Kenny Evoniuk had a cannon of an arm in the outfield. After two years at Cuesta, he is now at Oral Roberts University as a hard throwing pitcher.

Smoke Star Jason Young Inks Contract with Rockies

Jason Young, Smoke pitcher and Shortstop, after an incredible College career with Stanford has signed a contract with the Colorado Rockies.

Coach Joel Kaufman recalls the dominance of Jason in Connie Mack. "At age 17, already clocking a 93 mph fastball, I would feel guilty when we threw his dominating curve or changeup. He was just plain overpowering.
I knew this kid was special when he pitched a no-hitter for me at age 12 in the District All-Star Championship game against Antioch.

BREAKING NEWS: SMOKE'S JOHN BAKER REACHES BIG LEAGUES
baker_Fl

John Baker (1999) has finally done it.  He was added to the Major League roster on Tuesday July 8th, 2008.  John played for De La Salle High School and joined the Smoke as a first baseman.  He then played at Cal Berkeley before being drafted in the 4th round by the Oakland Athletics.  The A's traded John to the Flordia Marlins.  Congratulations to John and his family who reside in the Walnut Creek area.

John started his first big league game on Wednesday July 9th and got his first big league RBI with a 9th inning sacrifice fly driving in Jorge Cantu in the Marlins 5-2 win over San Diego.
