Varsity Schedule and Results (reported by Win Zoellner)
Tue, 9/2 vs Park Hill - Olathe Invitational - Won 3-1 (1-0)
Senior Zack Cole started the varsity season quickly with a goal in the first 14 seconds of the game off an assist by Alex Reynolds. The second goal was scored by freshman David Fancher with the assist again to Alex Reynolds. The first half was then stopped for a lightening delay. In the second half, Alex got a goal of his own off of a pass from the right side by Bobby Hoelting. Unfortunately the Cougars couldn't hold the shut out when Park Hill scored with one second on the clock off of a corner kick.
Thur, 9/4 vs Olathe East - Olathe Invitational - Lost 1-0 (4-1 PKs) (1-1)
In a very physical game that saw three Hawks booked, the Cougars and Hawks were scoreless in regulation and after two five minute OT periods only to go down in PKs 4-1.
Sat, 9/6 vs Oak Park - Olathe Invitational - Won 1-0 (2-1)
Kyle Martin made several key saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless at half. Six minutes into the second half, Alex Reynolds scored off of a Zack Cole shot and deflection to put the Cougars up 1-0. The back line, while missing two starters to injury, held the Northmen the remainder of the game and Kyle recorded his first shut out of the season. The Cougars went 2-1 in the tournament to take home the third place trophy.
Tue, 9/9 at Olathe South - Won 3-2 (3-1)
In one of the most exciting games anyone can remember, the Cougars knocked off the just announced #2 team in the state in the final second of the game to avenge last year's final second loss to the Falcons in the state playoffs. The Cougars had the Falcons on their heels most of the night, out shooting but not scoring until the 65th minute when Sam McCrillis, on a slant run from the right side, finished a Zack Cole penalty restart from just past midfield on the left side to put the Cougars up 1-0. The Falcons answered when they received the ball in an arguable off side play. With 1:08 remaining, Bobby Hoelting made a 40 yard sprint to retrieve a ball sent down the right side and lofted a perfect cross to Sam who made a beautiful header to take the lead 2-1. Thirteen seconds later, the Cougars couldn't hold the Falcons and they scored to equalize the game again with 55 seconds remaining (the clock stops after scores under five minutes). As the final seconds ticked down, Garrett Wiegele's perfect slot pass was finished by Jon Kankam as the clock hit zero.
Thur, 9/11 at Olathe East - Won 1-0 (4-1)
Capping off a great week of soccer, the Cougars knocked off the #1 team in the state (in the most recent coaches' poll) on a drizzly evening. The game was scoreless at half time, but in the 48th minute, Alex Gonzalez brought the ball up from deep in the defense to Garrett Wiegele whose shot deflected off the Hawks keeper to a waiting Sam McCrillis who finished a simple ball for the only score of the game. Kyle Martin and a banged up defensive line held for the shut out.
Tue, 9/16 vs Olathe North - Won 2-0 (5-1)
In front of a huge student crowd for the home opener, the Cougars defeated the Eagles 2-0. Owen Martin scored in the 26th minute after a well placed cross from the right side by Alex Reynolds. David Fancher put the game out of reach in the 68th minute with an easy put back of a wicked Jon Kankam shot that deflected off of the ON goalie. Shawn Miles, playing for the injured Kyle Martin, gets most of the shut out, but Kyle came in for the final 38 seconds to seal the victory. The Cougars moved up to #2 in 6A and #3 in Kansas in this week's coaches poll. Olathe North was ranked #5 in 6A this week prior to tonight's loss.
Sat, 9/20 vs SM West - Won 4-0 (6-1)
The Cougars beat SMW 4 - 0 under the hot September sun on Saturday afternoon. In the 13th minute, Junior Sam McCrillis scored off a nice through ball assist from Senior Zack Cole. At half time, the score was 1 - 0. In the 18th minute of the second half, Senior Alex Reynolds scored with an assist from, once again, Zack Cole. After a trip in the box, Freshman David Fancher's PK was deflected by the Viking keeper...Alex Reynolds was there for the rebound to score the 3rd Cougar goal. In the 29th minute, David Fancher took the ball up the right side on a counter attack. He crossed early to Alex Reynolds who put it away for the first hat trick of the season. Kyle Martin was back from injury and got the shutout.
Tue, 9/23 vs Lawrence HS - Won 2-0 (7-1)
The Cougars fought a physical game to beat the Lawrence Lions 2 - 0 for another shutout by Kyle Martin and the Cougar defense. Thirty minutes into the first half Owen Martin went to Jon Kankam who dribbled and twisted his way through the Lion defense for a solid goal. The score remained 1 - 0 the entire game until, with 3 minutes remaining, Zack Cole crossed it to Sam McCrillis who shot a bullet to the back of the net. The team looked great and the growing, noisy pack of fans was awesome! (If shots on goal had counted the Cougars would have won in a landslide.)Thur, 9/25 at Olathe NW - Tie 1-1 (7-1-1)
It seemed all 11 Raven players were playing defense so it was tough to get a goal despite clear Cougar domination on the field the first half. At half time, it was nil nil. Eight minutes into the second half, the Cougars moved the ball up the field quickly and Owen Martin crossed to Alex Reynolds for the first score of the game. The Cougars continued to control the game but the Ravens scored with 9 minutes remaining. Regulation play ended at 1-1 and two 10 minute overtime periods followed. The fans were ecstatic when the Cougars headed it in for a goal off a rebound from the Raven keeper's hands with 37 seconds remaining in the second overtime period...and then the fans were clearly frustrated when off sides was called. The game ended 1-1.
Mon, 9/29 vs Rockhurst - Lost 2-0 (7-2-1)
In front of a large and loud student crowd, the surging Cougars suffered their first loss of the season in regulation, going down 2-0 to a very good Rockhurst team. The Hawklets, who started the season ranked #1 in the nation by the NSCAA, recently fell out of the national spotlight, but are still a powerful squad. The Hawklets first score was at the 18 minute mark off of a free kick from just outside the box on the left side after a somewhat dubious call after a dive. At the 35 minute mark, the Hawklets were awarded an indirect kick in the box after a dangerous play call. While the Cougars argued the call, Rockhurst smartly put the ball down and in play, scoring easily during the confusion. Other than these two calls resulting in Rockhurst goals, neither team had much offense during the first half. In the second half, Rockhurst primarily possessed while the Cougars stepped up the offensive pressure considerably, however they couldn't find the net.
Wed, 10/1 vs Washburn Rural - Lost 1-0 (7-3-1)
The Cougars suffered their second shutout of the week against a solid 8th ranked Washburn Rural team. In the 14th minute, WR scored off a free kick from the left side that was headded back across the mouth of the goal to an unmarked Ichabod for an easy tap in. The Cougars had a number of good shots during the balance of the game but the WR keeper came up with several good saves to hold the Cougars scoreless.
Tue, 10/7 vs SM North -Senior Night - Won 4-0 (8-3-1)
The varsity boys didn't turn in one of their better performances but in a very workmanlike manner, they dispatched the Indians to complete a three team NW domination of SMN this afternoon, as well as complete the three team shutout. Matt Spero started the Cougar scoring by headding in a Curtis Martin cross in 9th minute. Matt Bergman started the next scoring drive with a long ball up the middle that was collected by Bobby Hoelting who dribbled deep into the right side of the box before crossing it to Alex Reynolds for the finish in the 21st minute. The halftime score was 2-0 while the Seniors were introduced along with their parents. Twenty minutes into the second half, Sam McCrillis layed off a nice ball to a running Alex Reynolds who juked the keeper for a simple finish. Zack Cole then crossed a ball to Owen Martin for the final score of the game. The Cougars couldn't contain their excitement as Garrett Wiegele and Kyle Moore (yes, Kyle Moore) picked up yellow cards in the waning minutes of the game.
Thur, 10/9 at Leavenworth - Won 3-0 (9-3-1)
The team stuggled to find the net tonight against a winless Leavenworth team. The first goal came in the 18th minute when Sam McCrillis crossed the ball from the left side to Zack Cole who found himself 1v1 with the keeper but beat him to go up 1-0. The Cougars were able to get many shots off in in the next 20 minutes but all were to the keeper, who made a number of solid saves to keep the game in check. As the first half wound down, Owen Martin crossed a ball from the right side into the box where Alex Reynolds headed it in to go up 2-0. Alex got his second goal of the evening when he took the ball from midfield, beat the defender, and made several cuts in the box to beat the keeper for the final goal of the evening.
Tue, 10/14 vs SM East - Won 3-0 (10-3-1)
The Cougars solidified their first place lead in the Sunflower League race with tonight's solid victory over the Lancers. Both teams started out scrappy but in the 34th minute, Sam McCrillis launched a left footed shot from the left side that hit a Lancer defender and deflected into the path of Curtis Martin who shot it in the left corner of the goal to go up 1-0. The second half had barely started when Johnny McNair sent a ball down deep into the left corner to Zack Cole who cracked a high floater from the sideline over the keeper's head and landed in the far side net 45 seconds in to go up 2-0. A minute later, Sam McCrillis brough the ball down the middle of the field and layed it off to Owen Martin on the right side who sent a nice cross back into the box. Zack collected it and shot but it deflected off the keeper. Garrett Wiegele was there to head it in to go up 3-0 with 37 minutes remainining in the second half. Kyle Martin and the defenders recorded their 8th shutout of the season.
Tuesday, 10/21 and Wednesday 10/22 vs SM South - Won 3-0 (11-3-1)
On Tuesday night in the cold rain, Owen Martin scored off an assist from Zack Cole to put the Cougars up 1-0 against the Raiders. Matt Spero then scored with an assist from John McNair. With 17 minutes remaining in the first half, the game was stopped due to weather with the score at 2-0. On Wednesday, the game was resumed with the same score and time and the Cougars made it 3-0 with a Garrett Wiegele score off an indirect free kick. With another shut out for Kyle Martin and the Cougar defense, the Cougars beat the Raiders 3-0.
Friday, 10/24 vs Lawrence FreeState @ YSI - Won 2-0 (12-3-1)
In the chilly, intermittent rain, the Cougars controlled the game with Free State. First, David Fancher went to Alex Reynolds who put the Cougars on the board making it 1-0. With 9 minutes remaining in the first half, David Fancher took a loose ball in the box to the upper 90 for a sweet goal. Going into half, the score was 2-0. Despite complete control of the ball the second half by the Cougars, the game ended 2-0. Another shutout for Kyle Martin and the Cougar defense.
1st round Regional Game: Tuesday, 10/28 vs SM North - Won 6-0 (13-3-1)
Despite the chilly evening, a huge crowd came out to cheer the Cougars while they took care of business in their opening round game of the state tournament. Alex Reynolds got the scoring started in the 13th minute, heading in a free kick taken by Matt Spero from the right side just outside the box. In the 31st minute, an Indian defender scored an own goal on a crossing ball sent in by David Fancher. Two minutes later Curtis Martin sent a nice cross in from the right and Alex finished it again with a header to put the Cougars up 3-0 going into half time. Five minutes into the second half, Owen Martin was taken down in the box as he was advancing on the Indian goal. Owen's circuitous run up on his PK froze the keeper and he buried it to extend the lead to four goals. David Fancher, just 30 seconds back into the game, finished a Zack Cole cross for the fifth goal. Zack got the final goal of the evening, finishing a Bobby Hoelting cross. The large second half lead allowed Coach Boren to substitute liberally, including the return of the injured Adam Zoellner, who hasn't seen action since the Olathe East game on September 11th. Kyle Martin and the Cougar defenders recorded their 11th shutout of the year. The Cougars advance to face SM South, who advanced on PKs vs BV North on Monday night.
Regional Final Game: Thursday, 10/30 vs SM South - Won 3-0 (14-3-1)
The Cougars faced the Raiders for the second time in eight days and despite the same outcome and score, it was a considerably different game. Sam McCrillis had an opportunity to score early after beating the Raider keeper in the 3rd minute but failed to find the net. Four minutes later, in what is becoming a standard play for the Cougar offense, Owen Martin crossed it from deep in the right corner to Alex Reynolds who headed it in to go up 1-0. The Raiders pressed the Cougar defense hard the remainder of the half and it took several key saves by Kyle Martin to hold the slim 1-0 lead. SMNW added a safety goal in the 60th minute after a Zack Cole restart from just outside the box on the left side found Jon Kankam on the PK spot who one touch left foot flicked the ball into the net. The Raiders changed into a more agressive 3-4-3 formation following the second goal and put considerable pressure on the NW defense. Kyle Martin came up big several more times proving why he's the Sunflower defensive player of the league. In the waning minutes of the game, Zack Cole collected the ball and unassisted unloaded a worm burner from the left side at a very tight angle that somehow blew through all the traffic in the box for the final goal. A large and growing crowd congratulated the Regional Champions as they hoisted their trophy and marched on to the state quarterfinal game.
State Quarter Final: Tuesday, 11/4 vs Olathe East - Lost 3-1 (14-4-1)
Copied from Jeff Gelski's article in the KC Star
Olathe East senior Josh Rydberg's free kick from beyond midfield bounced once and went high over the head of Shawnee Mission Northwest goalkeeper Kyle Martin. The ball found the net. Suddenly SMNW's seven-game shutout string was over. The momentum belonged to Olathe East, which rolled to a 3-1 6A soccer quarterfinal victory at SMAC. "I wound up and hit it as hard as I could" Rydberg said. "I'm not going to take credit for anything, but I think that put us back in the game". The goal tied the score at 1-1 about 4 minutes before the half. Second-half Olathe East goals came on a header from Andy Griffin of an assit from Jacob Lundberg and a free kick from Laeth Hamil. "Our strategy coming in was push, push, push," Hamil said. Olathe East, 15-3-1, advances to the Kansas 6A state tournament in Topeka. SMNW, the Sunflower League champion, ended the year at 14-4-1. The teams split matches in the regular season. "We had a great season - league championship, regional championship", SMNW coach Todd Boren said. "Northwest had not had either one of those for six, seven years". SMNW's goal on Tuesday came about 11 minutes into the game when Garrett Wiegele's shot from 15 yards out bounced off an Olathe East player and into the goal. Olathe East had the wind at its back in the first half but could not take advantage of it until Rydberg's kick more than 50 yards away. "I was trying to kick the ball into a dangerous area, not necessarily into the goal," Rydberg said. Olathe East kept up the offensive pressure in the second half even though SMNW had the wind at its back. "We had a pretty good idea about what thye were going to do," Boren said. "We talked about some things we could do as a team. Unfortunately we kind of made some defensive mistakes and gave up some fouls."

C Team Schedule and Results (reported by Win Zoellner)
Tue, 9/2 vs BV North - Lost 2-0 (0-1)
The Mustangs dominated the game for the most part but the Cougars held them scoreless into the 77th minute when they yielded a goal off of a corner kick. The Mustangs scored again a minute later off of a breakaway when the defense was pulled up.
Fri, 9/5 vs Olathe NW - cancelled due to wet fields at Stump Park
Tue, 9/9 at SM East - Won 1-0 (1-1)
The Cougars got their first win of the season in one of the uglier games in recent memory. The Cougars dominated the Lancers early and Bill Kolega scored the first goal of the season and only goal of the game after beating several Lancer defenders in the 8th minute. 22 minutes into the game, goalkeeper Matt Humphrey was kicked in the head after clearly gaining possession of the ball on a routine scoop up play. The offending Lancer was issued a yellow card, which clearly should have been a red for violent play. Coach Driessel was subsequently issued a yellow while expressing his displeasure. In the second half, this particular official issued five more yellow cards to various Cougars, including a second yellow card to Coach Driessel which resulted in his dismissal from the field. The Cougars won in the card count with six yellows and one red to the Lancer's two yellows.
Wed, 9/10 at Olathe East - Tie 0-0 (1-1-1)
The Cougars outshot the Hawks by a wide margin and controlled the game most of the way but couldn't find the net. The Hawks goalie in the second half had several key saves keeping the game scoreless. Coach Boren filled in for Coach Driessel.
Mon, 9/15 vs Blue Valley - cancelled due to wet fields at Stump Park
Wed, 9/17 at SM West - Won 5-2 (2-1-1)
The team turned in an impressive performance this afternoon. After giving up a goal early, they rallied and scored the next two. In the 9th minute, Alec Kremers had a nice finish in the box to equalize the score. Five minutes later, Bill Kolega headed in an Alec Kremers assist after some confusion in the SMW box. As the first half was winding down, Logan Harrold drove the ball half the length of the field off a penalty kick restart and Ben Schmidt headed it in to the far post to go up 3-1 at half. The Vikes scored early to start the second half but in the 66th minute, Bill Kolega sent a rocket into the West net from the right side. And finally, Zack Bundy finished an Arjun Kumar corner kick in the 76th minute to round out the game.
Tue, 9/23 vs. Lawrence HS - Won 5-1 (3-1-1)
The Cougars beat the Lawrence Lions 5 - 1 bringing their record to 3-1-1. The Cougars went up early with Ben Schmitt's high arching shot over the Lion keeper's fingertips for the first goal. After a foul (supposedly in the box), the Lions tied it up off a PK. Shortly thereafter, Arjun Kumar scored off an assist from Logan Harrold. Before the half ended, Sam Filsinger took the ball all the way down for a dramatic goal bringing the half time score to 3-1. After no scoring until the end of the second half, Arjun took a beautiful corner kick and Ben Schmitt scored with a dive in heavy traffic. Just before the game ended, Sam Filsinger had another beautiful high shot just out of the Lion keeper's reach. A very strong showing by these Freshman and Sophomores!
Mon, 9/29 vs SM East @ Stump Park - Lost 2-0 (3-2-1)
The Cougars yielded an early goal at the 6 minute mark off of a PK. The Lancers dominated the most of the remainder of the first half but it was still 1-0 at half time. The Lancers scored again off of a well placed cross and headder combination in the second half while the Cougars couldn't muster any offense until late in the game but couldn't find the net.
Wed, 10/1 at BV North - Lost 1-0 (3-3-1)
The team played a very even first half against a solid Mustang team with no score at halftime. The Mustangs scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute off a cross from the right side that was headded into the Cougar goal. Two minutes later the Cougars failed to convert a PK which would have equalized the game. Both teams had several more good opportunites late in the game but failed to convert. The effort this evening was considerably better than the prior game.
Tue, 10/7 vs SM North @ Antioch MS - Won 6-0 (4-3-1)
The C team started what would become a rare three team shutout of three SMN teams this afternoon. Ben Schmidt finished a Bill Kolega cross for the first goal of the game. Jose Martinez had a nice high cross into the box that was headded in by Matt Humphrey for the second goal. Shortly before half, Nathan Palmer was pulled down in the box and Jose finished the PK after a nifty stutter step run up that froze the Indian keeper. Chris D'Silva finished Ben's cross to start the second half scoring. Bill Kolega made his PK about halfway through the second half, and Jose got his second goal of the afternoon when he collected a slop ball in the box and finished it for the final score.
Fri, 10/10 vs Olathe NW @ Stump Park - Won 3-0 (5-3-1)
On a gorgeous sunny Friday afternoon, the C team played a complete game, scoring three times while shutting out the Ravens. The first goal in the 31st minute came off a Jake Gipple assist to Jose Martinez who after collecting the pass, made several nice cuts to beat the keeper. Midway through the second half, Logan Harrold settled a ball well outside the box and cracked a nice ball that found the net. The final goal came off of a Jake Gipple shot that hit the crossbar but deflected back in bounds. Jose settled it before passing it to Luis Fernandez who put it in the near corner.
Mon, 10/13 vs BV West @ BV West - Won 2-0 (6-3-1)
On a drizzly day, the C team played one of their best games of the season in shutting out the Jaguars. Bill Kolega put the Cougars up 1-0 after converting a PK in the 22nd minute on a call that no one seemed to realize was even a call or on whom. Logan Harrold connected on a free kick 20 minutes later that was collected by Jose Martinez and shot by Nathan Palmer but didn't score. Derek Armstrong made several nice defensive stops shortly before half to preserve the lead. The second half was a well played 40 minutes by two very evenly matched teams with both teams with several good offensive opportunites and defensive stops. With three minutes remaining, Jose beat several defenders deep in the left side of the box and shot a ball across the mouth of the goal that found the far side net for the final score of the game.
Tue, 10/14 at Olathe South - Won 5-2 (7-3-1)
The C team is continuing to play more and more as a team and extended their winning streak to four games ahead of what will be a tough Aquinas tournament. Bill Kolega got the scoring started early, beating several defenders and scoring to go up 1-0 in the first minute. At the 13 minute mark, Arjun Kumar's shot hit the keeper and deflected out and Thomas Vershelden chased it down and scored to go up 2-0. Several minutes later, Jose Martinez' shot landed in a large puddle in the goal mouth and died. Nathan Palmer smartly was there and finished it just as the Falcon goal keeper dove into the puddle only to come up emptyhanded. At the 23 minute mark, the Falcons slipped a ball past the Cougar defensive line but Matt Humphrey couldn't get to the ball first and the Falcons were on the board for a 3-1 half time score. In the second half, Sam Filsinger's well placed corner kick hit the keeper's hands and Bill finished it for his second goal of the day. Luke Moore played a pass back to near the PK spot where Nathan Palmer head flicked it past the keeper for his second goal of the day. Nathan celebrated with a head first dive into another puddle of standing water on on the field. As the game was winding down, the Falcons converted a PK after a poor call on Christian Caldwell for a trip after what was a very nice defensive clear.
Fri, 10/17 at St. Thomas Aquinas - STA Tournament - Lost 2-1 (7-4-1)
In the opening game of this four team tournament, Bill Kolega got the scoring started early off a pass by Ben Schmidt. Bill beat the defender then got past the keeper for the first goal. But 20 mintues later, the Saints equalized the score off a PK. Then shortly before half, the Cougars committed another foul just outside the box which the Staints finished to go up 2-1. Despite controlling the ball most of the second half, they couldn't score again. The team was playing down two defenders which didn't help their performance this afternoon.
Sat, 10/18 vs Park Hill South - STA Tournament - Won 2 -1 (8-4-1)
The Cougars controlled and won the game against a strong Park Hill South team. The Cougars had so many shots on goal that we lost count. Park Hill went up in the first half with a long, very, very high and tricky ball in the sun that fell into the goal. The Cougars tied it up with a shot by Alec Kremers off a rebound from the Park Hill keeper. In the second half, the Cougars went on attack with a cross from Luis Fernandez to Eric Zoellner who took the quick shot as the ball reached his feet to put the Cougars up 2-1.
