Thank You

All Intramural Coordinators and Coaches,

Thank you for volunteering your time towards the players and the program, without you stepping up our program would not be the largest and best on Long Island.

Enjoy your holidays with your families and friends.  The Spring 2010 season is just around the corner, thank you again.

Ken Indovino

FAQ's About Intramurals

FAQ's About Intramurals
Intramural Frequently Asked Questions:

(The following is a reprint of "frequently asked questions" from a prior newsletter issue about our intramural program)

When and Where will my child be playing?

All intramural programs play on Saturdays. with the exceptions of community functions (i.e. High School Home Coming, Marathon Fund Raisers, etc.) when the games will be made up on Sundays. During the course of the Spring and Fall season, make-up games due to inclement weather are attempted to be rescheduled for Sunday.

Practice day and times can not be answered off this table; it is based on the coach’s personal schedule.

The following table should help you figure when and where your child will play.

What is the Clinic?

Clinic and MicroClinic are programs designed to teach "first touch" of the soccer ball aimed at teaching the most basic of soccer skills. The programs are geared towards introducing the very young player to small-sided teams and interaction with others.

What equipment do we need?

All players registered into our club are required to wear shinguards.

All other Intramural players are required to wear the "In House" Smithtown Kicker uniform consisting of one white shirt, one blue shirt, one pair of white shorts and socks. Uniforms can be purchased at Port Jefferson Sporting Goods located at 44 East Main Street in Smithtown. Call 366-2252 for store hours. Cost: about $34.00

Pee-Wee and Midget Division players need a Size 3 soccer ball. Bantam and Junior Division players need a Size 4 soccer ball. Majors and Seniors need a Size 5 soccer ball.

It is important for each player to have their own ball for all practices as well as on game days. Please do not rely on your coaches to always have an "extra."

Who will my coach be and can I request Coach "So and So"?

Coaching positions are not filled until registration has been completed. Coaches are chosen on the basis of volunteerism and past club affiliation. Once the coaching staff has been chosen, teams are created. In an effort to be fair, drafts are held for the Bantam, Junior, Major and Senior Divisions. In the Pee Wee and Midget Divisions, teams are created by distributing the players based on the number of seasons played. We try to maintain balance throughout the club and therefore do not "stack" or create "neighborhood" teams. We do not honor requests for any division except the Clinic where the children at pre-school age might feel more comfortable with a friendly face. And, of course, twins are always placed on the same team.

What division does my child play in?

Divisions are determined strictly by date of birth according to the Long Island Junior Soccer League Regulations. We are unable to move a child from one division to the next regardless of physical size or ability without risking the loss of our sanctioning and insurance by LIJSL, so please do not ask!!

How do I sign my child up?

Registration for the Spring Soccer season will be held at the NY Avenue (see the Welcome Page for info)

Intramural Rules and Regulations
Intramural Play, Field Info & Rules
PEE-WEES Ball Size #3

Field Information:

The Pee-Wee fields are 20 yds. wide x 30 yds. long. The goals are small pop up goals 6 ft wide and 3.5 feet high There is no center line and there is no center circle. There is a line 6 yds up from each goal across the width of the field,

The Pee-Wee program is designed as the first introduction of the players to the use of referees in a game. It is also probably the first time the coaches have experienced referees. The referees are required to assist the players in adhering to the rules of the game and are asked to help the players learn some of the skills of the game goal kicks, corner kicks, etc. There are no keepers and/or sweeper keeper. THERE ARE NO USE OF HANDS.

Game Duration:

The game will consist of 4/10 minute quarters running time with stops when necessary for substitutions. There will be 1-2 minutes between quarters.

Rules:

The rules of the Pee-Wee program are very basic:

The teams can only play 3v3 soccer with substitutions.
There is no offside. There are no penalty kicks.
All restarts are indirect. A goal can only score after two players have touched the ball. There are no direct kicks. The defending players must give 5 yards space.

If a ball goes out over the sideline, the ball is placed where went out and the player kicks it into play.
If a ball goes over the endline and an attacker last touched the ball, a goal kick is taken from anywhere in the goal box.
If a ball goes over the endline and a defender last touched the ball, a corner kick is taken.

After a goal, the team that was scored upon restarts with a goal kick. The defending team must retreat all players to it's own goal-keeping box.

All substitutions must be requested of the referee and can only be done on a throw-in, a goal kick or a re-start after a goal or a referee time-out.

All players must have equal playing time and the coaches must rotate the players to all positions.

There is no Sweeper keeper the game is to be played 3v3 with no use of the hands.
The game is started with a goal kick and possession should be rotated each quarter.

MIDGETS

Field Information:

The Midget fields are 30 yds. wide x 45 yds. long. The goals are 9 ft. wide x 4 ft. high. There is center line and a 5 yard radius center circle. There is a goal-keeping area marked on the field, but no penalty area.

The Midget program is designed as the first introduction of the players to the center line and the concept of halves of the field. It is also their first introduction to the center circle and kick-offs from the midline and they will require instruction as to the proper way to kick-off and encroachment on the circle. It is also their first introduction to a goal-keeping box, as opposed to just an end of the field which they used in the Pee-Wee program.

Game Duration:

The game will consist of 4/10 minute quarters running time with stops as necessary for substitution. There will be 1-2 minutes between quarters.

Rules:

The rules of the Midget program are similar to Pee-Wees:

The teams should play 4v4 soccer with substitutions. If the teams do not have enough players, they can play 3v3. Under no circumstances can they play more than 4v4.
See Pee-Wee rules 2-6.
After a goal, a re-start is taken from the midline. The defending team must give 5 yds (i.e. be outside the center circle).
Substitutions must be requested of the referee and can only be done on the teams own throw-in, a goalkick, a re-start after a goal or a referee time-out.
All players must have equal playing time and the coaches must rotate the players to all the positions.
Goalkeepers can only handle the ball in the goal-keeping box and should be encouraged to join the field of play in a conventional manner and act as a sweeper.
Any infraction by the defending team in the goal-keeping area results in the awarding of an indirect kick for the attacking team. The ball is placed outside the goal-keeping area.
The referee should use a coin toss to start the game.
The game is started with a kick-off from the mid-line and possession should be rotated every quarter.

BANTAM

Field Information:

The Bantam fields are 45 yds. wide x 60 yds. long. The goals are 15 ft. wide x 7 ft. high. The field has a center line, a center circle, a goal box and a penalty area. The Bantam program is designed as the first introduction of the players to a real goal box and the penalty area. It is also their first introduction to the use of a modified system of FIFA rules including offsides.

Game Duration:

The game will consist of 4/10-12 minute quarters as time allows with short rests between quarters and half.

Rules:

The Bantam program rules are the rules from the FIFA rules book except as follows:

The teams play 6v6 soccer with substitutions. If they don't have enough players, they can play 5v5. If they have too many players, they can play 7v7, but no higher.
All rules should be explained to the players if there is any question as to the reason for the call.
Players are given a second chance on a throw-in.
There are no penalty shots. Any violation in the penalty area results in a free kick from outside the penalty area.
Particular care should be giver to trying to explain the offside rule to the players and coaches since it is their first experience with offside. Leniency in calling offside should be used in the beginning of the season, but frequent explanations should be given.
Remember, these players are still young and this is their first exposure to FIFA rules. Try to help them.

JUNIOR/MAJOR FIELD & RULES

The Junior/Major fields are 45 yds. x 75 yds. with 8x16' goals . They have all the markings of a soccer field within proportions.

The Junior/Major age groups are the players’ first introduction to true FIFA rules of the game including penalty shots, offside & throw-ins. Juniors are required to play 8v8 or less; Majors 9v9 or less. The game consists of 4/15 minute quarters with a 5 min. halftime.

SENIOR FIELD & RULES

The Senior fields are 55 yds. wide x 100 yds. long with all the true markings of a regulation soccer field.

The Senior age-group plays FIFA rules. The teams try to play 11v11 but can play less if there are not enough players. 4/15 min.
