Coach Bill McCreary
Congratulations to the boys for earning their second consecutive Ann Arbor Tournament Division Championship this weekend!
The first game was a rematch of last years District Championship against an improved Monroe Team. The boys brought their best effort to date for three full periods and earned a 6-0 victory while only allowing 4 shots against the entire game. The speed and intensity with which we played dominated the play and most of the game was in Monroe’s defensive zone.
The Championship game on Saturday, against a hard working, well coached St. Claire Shores team has been our toughest challenge of this young season.
The first period was dominated by St. Claire Shores as we continue to struggle with undisciplined, unnecessary penalties. Although having to kill 6 penalties in the first period and being outshot 15-4, our solid power play and penalty kill execution earned us a 2-1 lead.
The second period we played with more discipline, energy, and focus and late in the period we were enjoying a 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, once again a needless penalty was taken and St. Claire Shores scored on the power play as the period was ending.
Our 4-2 lead diminished in a hurry as St. Claire capitalized on our sloppy defensive zone play in the third period. When our clearing attempts were not successful, the puck soon ended up in our net and early into the third period the game was tied at 4-4. Both teams battled hard through the remainder of regulation and the score remained 4-4.
In the first OT period we played with more energy and although unsuccessful in scoring out shot St Claire 7-3 and controlled much of the play.
In the second OT period we once again were carrying the play until a turnover led to a breakaway for St. Claire Shores. Goaltender John Slavik aggressively came out of his net to challenge the shooter, stayed with the player as he made a nice deke and was in excellent position to make the tournament saving stop! A few moments later, as often happens after a big save, with Danny Diroff, Jared Vincek, and Bobby Lane forechecking hard, Bobby and Jared battled relentlessly for possession of the puck and Jared made a beautiful pass to Danny in front of the net. Danny, without hesitation snapped the puck past the St Claire Shores Goalie for the winning Goal!
A great win, a fun weekend, and this will give us confidence going into a very challenging week starting Monday against rival Novi.

Things couldn't have gone much sweeter for South Lyon through the first two periods of the opening game Friday. The Lions racked up a 6-0 lead and went on to win 6-3 against Lake Orion as part of the Metro High School Invitational at Novi Ice Arena.
“If it wasn't for our power play working well, it would've been a much different game,” said South Lyon head coach Bill McCreary. “I think we had two even-strength goals, so the power play certainly helped out.” South Lyon made Lake Orion pay for its mistakes, punching home four power play goals.
Jared Vincek started the scoring with a wrist shot near the top of the faceoff circle on the power play with 14:32 remaining in the first. Trevor Eckler and Michael Hoy assisted.
Bobby Lane pushed the lead to 2-0, beating Dragon keeper Dominic Juncuj blocker side with a wrister at 7:40. Eckler picked up his second assist.
Dan Diroff gave the Lions a 3-0 lead with another power play goal at 5:08 with another wrist shot near the top of the circle. Hoy earned another assist.
The second period started much like the first with Eckler netting a power play goal at 13:32. Colin Tittle and Hoy assisted.
The lead grew to 5-0 when Lane redirected a shot in front of the net off a shot from Diroff for the fourth power play goal.
Paul Durand made it 6-0 with a roof shot close in and with the keeper down with 3:17 remaining in the second. Tittle earned his second assist on the play.
John Slavik made a couple of nice saves, but he held his ground on a penalty shot late in the second to keep the Dragons off the board. Lake Orion finally cracked the scoreboard with a power play goal less than two minutes into the final period. The Dragons picked up the pace and added two more goals, but the game was pretty much decided after the 6-0 lead.
FARMINGTON 5, SOUTH LYON 3
The script was flipped the next day. The Lions fell behind early and were unable to climb out of the hole. Farmington took a 4-1 lead early in the second period before South Lyon regrouped offensively. T
he special teams scored a pair of power play goals, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lions lost their first game of the season, 5-3. “We outplayed Farmington Hills in the second and third periods but could not dig our way out of the hole from the first period,” said McCreary.
