MARTY STILLMAN SELECTED FOR PLAY BALL! MINNESOTA COACHES AWARD

Marty Stillman of St.Louis Park has been chosen by Play Ball! Minnesota and the Minnesota Twins Community Fund as a recipient of the Play Ball! Minnesota Coaches Award. He was honored at a pre-game reception ceremony on the Metrodome field on Wednesday, August 12 and received a certificate and Twins jacket.

This is Stillman’s third year as a Little League coach in SLP. He served as an assistant coach for two years, and this summer served as head coach of his son’s Minors team, General Sports. He also served as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Park Little League 9-10 year-old All-Star Team.

The Coaches Award “honors youth baseball and softball coaches who work to provide a positive youth athletic experience for their players,” according to the criteria described on Play Ball! Minnesota’s website. “Coaching youth baseball and softball should be as much about developing positive character traits as it is about teaching the fundamentals of baseball/softball or creating winning teams.”

Stillman was nominated for his role in improving the competitive fairness of Little League baseball in St. Louis Park, and for his effectiveness in cultivatingstrong team coherence and sportsmanship. Paul Provost, assistant coach of the General Sports team, described how Stillman designed a new method for player evaluation and tryouts that improved the tryout procedures and the overall team compositions in the League. Little League President John Gordon openly complimented Marty for his vision and commitment to improve the baseball experience for over 160 kids.

Provost commented, “Marty is a terrific teacher of the game. Effort, teamwork and positive competitiveness are his coaching goals…Everyone is provided the chance to contribute and improve themselves at a rate they’re capable of. . .Games to Marty are celebrations for the kids and their families.”

VOLUNTEERING AND SLPLL

SLPLL, is a volunteer run, not-for-profit organization, which strives to provide a youth baseball program in St. Louis Park which is equally accessible and affordable to all.  In keeping with that mission, each family registered in SLPLL will need to complete 12 hours of volunteer time each season. Some parents will volunteer as coaches, team parents, or board members.  Other families will reserve shifts in the concession stands at Rotary or Skippy by using an online scheduling system. Click on the link above and follow the directions to get started. If you have any questions regarding your volunteer commitment, please contact Lisa Campbell. slpcamfam@gmail.com
