Vipers Win the Sacramento County Memorial Day Challenge!
Click here for more...With a 4-1-1 record the San Jose Vipers took the 18U division of the Sacramento County Memorial Day Challenge. It was an 11 team tournament and the Vipers were seeded 2nd in the Sheldon pool. They faced the #1 and #2 teams from the Florin pool to take the title.
In Saturday's tournament action the Vipers defeated the Delta Indians 1-0. Great pitching and solid defense held the Indians scoreless. The Vipers lone run crossed the plate on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
Next were the Tri-City Titans. With several of the players familiar with one another, it made for an exciting game. Once again, great pitching and solid defense helped the Vipers to a 5-0 win.
Sunday morning the Vipers lost their only game to the team from Pacifica. The Vipers seemed to be a bit "foggy" in the early morning start and lost 5-2.
Sunday afternoon brought an intense battle between the undefeated Ripon Angels and the 2-1 Vipers. Good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting were key in this game. The Vipers scored both of their runs on a 2 out base hit up the middle that tied the game at 2-2. Then came the throw that put the Vipers into 2nd place. On a base hit to rightfield, an Angels runner tried to score from 2nd and was nailed by the throw to homeplate. The runner was called out, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. When pool play was finished, that tie, sent the Angels home.
After a good nights sleep, the Vipers came out of the dugout swinging. They defeated the #1 seeded Modesto Pirates by a score of 8-6. A lead off triple started the Vipers day and the hits just kept coming. Key hits, good baserunning and solid pitching helped the Vipers advance to the Championship game.
After a quick break for field prep, the Championship game was on. The Vipers took on the #2 seeded River City Wolverines and once again came out swinging. The score after 2 innings, 7-0 Vipers. Then the heat began to take its toll. The Wolverines started chipping away at the lead, but the Vipers were able to hold on and answer back. Teamwork and clutch performances were key in this game. Every Viper on the field contributed. Pitchers caught, and catchers pitched, even the shortstop recorded a few K's. Several Vipers found themselves in unusual positions for an inning or two. The Vipers began and ended the game by sitting the Wolverines down in order, 1-2-3. The final score, Vipers 11 - Wolverines 10.
Thanks to the players and coaches for a great weekend of baseball! You showed us what teamwork, dedication and leaving it all on the field means! Thanks to the Vipers and Vipers parents who were able to make it this weekend. And a big "Thank You" to our hosts, Sacramento County Baseball, Sheldon High School and USSSA Baseball.
