Club History

Welcometo SJSSC
General Information

Speed skating is to winter sports as running is to summer:  simple at first and beautiful to watch, and yet, amazinglycomplex.  With each key element a skater masters, more subtleties demandattention.   Skating well is hard work for the body and mind! SJSSC encourages participation from people of all ages, from 5 to 95, from casual fitness to aspiring Olympians. Two disciplines exist:  short-track (ST) done in an arena and long-track (LT) done at the Susan Auch Speed Skating Oval.  To fully benefit from the SJSSC program, skaters are encouraged to participate in both disciplines.

SJSSC History

Our club was first established in the early ‘30s.The club’s activities were interrupted by WWII, but the program wasre-established in the ‘60s.  We’ve been going strong ever since, with some athletes reaching the top echelons of the sport and hundreds learning and enjoying the sport for their entire lives.  SJSSC is a member of The Manitoba Speed Skating Association (MSSA) which provides quality leadership, support, and programs for athletes, officials, coaches and volunteers throughout the province.

Classes

SJSSC runs its hour-long classes, in either ST or LT, on Monday & Thursday evenings.   Short track runs from October to March at the AllardArena, 80 Allard Avenue in sunny St. James. Groups are assigned by the coaches by experience.

 Mondays         5:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. or

            6:40 p.m.- 7:40 p.m.

Thursdays         6:40 p.m. -7:40 p.m. or

                       7:50 p.m.- 8:50 p.m.

Susan Auch SpeedSkating Oval

In conjunction with other Manitoba speed skating clubs our skaters practice and train at the Susan Auch Speed Skating Oval at Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, 999 Sargent Avenue during long track season. Long Track season takes place from approximately December 15 to March 15 depending on the weather. It is the traditional form of speed skating and requires a 400-meter oval such as the outdoor track located at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex (previously the Sargent Park Pool and Complex).

Races

SJSSC athletes, coaches, volunteers and parents enjoy wonderful times at the many local meets.  Participants of all ages match their skills in friendly competition.  As skaters get faster, they often travel to meets in Regina, Saskatoon, Minnesota and, of course, Calgary!

SJSSC Club Social Events

We enjoy organizing fun times for the kids such as jellybean counting contests, hot chocolate and cookie nights. Shortly after the last skating practice in March, our speed skaters and their families get together for a barbecue and potluck. Silent Auction, pins and club awards are presented.

Volunteering Opportunities

It’s always fun! It’s a great way to get acquainted with both skaters and parents/supporters as a meet coordinator, announcer, recorder, runner, referee, track steward, starter, clerk, lap counter, timer, line judge, or kitchen/food preparation.

Safety

All children on the ice must have aparent or guardian in attendance at the classes and meets.  As well, basic safety equipment is mandatory for everyone.   Part of SJSSC’s camaraderie comes from combining efforts to put up padded mats around the boards for ST classes.  And finally, our coaches keep a close eye on the skaters during classes as they perform drills and laps in well-organized groups.

Fundraising 2007-2008 Season

Speed Skating Equipment

All Short Track skaters must wear mandatory safety gear consisting of:

  • A well-fitted helmet
  • Cut resistant gloves or mitts
  • Shin pads
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads (for younger kids)
  • Bib-style neck guards
  • Long-sleeved clothing to protect skin from the ice
  • Tights or pants that fit snugly around the ankle to prevent interference when skating

Shannon Rempel is Going to the Olympics
Excerpt from Winnipeg Free Press article written by Paul Wiecek on Thursday, January 5, 2006:

"They'll all wear the colours of Canada on their backs, but the heart of this country's 2006 Olympic speed skating team will be Manitobans hardened by prairie winters.

Five of the 19 members of Canada's Turin-bound speed skating team, unveiled to the media here at the Olympic Oval yesterday, are native Winnipeggers -- Cindy Klassen, Clara Hughes, Mike Ireland, Shannon Rempel and Brittany Schussler.

That's not only more Manitobans than this province has ever had on the national speed skating team at one Olympics, it's also two more athletes than the entire Olympic contingent of three that Manitoba sent to the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. Manitoba sent eight athletes to Salt Lake City in 2002."

"Rempel, who grew up in Charleswood, is just 21-years-old but was hailed yesterday as one of the rising stars of the Canadian skating program -- and a legitimate medal threat in her own right.

Rempel credited former Winnipeg skater and two-time Olympic medallist Susan Auch with giving her the inspiration to persevere through those cold practices at Sargent Park."

Shannon Rempel Wins Silver at Speed Skating Championships
Shannon Rempel, originally from the St. James Speed Skating Club, won silver in the 1,000m at the Long Track Speed Skating World Cup January 14, 2005. Shannon overcame a wobble on the last crossover to finish second with a personal best 1:15.95. It was her second World Cup medal this season."I knew if I wanted to get a medal tonight I’d have to get a personal best," said Shannon, the world junior champion in 2003. "I was aggressive and really psyched for that last lap. It’d been a few weeks since the last World Cup and I was feeling a little bit nervous, but we really prepared well for this."

In the women's 500, Rempel notched another top-10 finish clocking a personal best 38.10 for sixth spot.

Congratulations, Shannon!! We are really proud of you!!
