Willow Glen Little League: Volunteer Opportunities
For the 2009 Baseball Season, each family with children playing in Willow Glen Little League will be responsible for fulfilling one volunteer assignment within the league. This is in addition to the 1 snack shack shift that each child's parents must serve. The following briefly describes each volunteer opportunity:
1. Baseball Manager - This position is the head coach of a specific team within Willow Glen Little League. The manager essentially runs the baseball side of the team. The manager is responsible for planning and running team practices, making out game-day lineups, and managing the team during games. This position is not as intimidating as it may seem, especially at the T-Ball and Minor A levels! You always have at least a couple of assistant coaches who are there to help you out and cover for you when you need to miss a practice or game due to other commitments.
2. Baseball Coach - The coach is an assistant to the manager and helps with all baseball aspects of the team. Coaches are vital parts of any team, and are often called upon to help run practices and games when the manager is not available. Note that in Minor AA and above only 2 official coaches are allowed. That doesn't stop additional "coaches" from helping out during practices, but only the 2 official coaches are allowed on the field during games.
3. Team Parent - The Team Parent is the Manager's right-hand man (or woman), and is a vital component of the team. Whereas the Manager typically runs the baseball part of the team, the Team Parent runs the administrative side. The Team Parent is responsible for organizing snack schedules, coordinating the team's turns in running the snack shack, planning mid-season and end-of-the-year team parties, and helping the Manager contact parents when practices or games are cancelled.
4. Umpires - One of the most important volunteer positions in Willow Glen Little League is being an umpire, or part of our Blue Crew. We are very proud of the fact that we are one of the few leagues remaining who have a 100% volunteer crew of umpires. This is one of the major reasons we are able to have registrations fees far below neighboring leagues. Umpires are trained and outfitted by Willow Glen Little League, and are responsible for umpiring games at the Minor AA and above. We are happy to schedule assignments around whatever schedule you may have, and it doesn't matter if you are able to umpire 3 games or 50!
5. Field Maintenance - Volunteering for field maintenance simply means that you'll volunteer to help mow the grass, prepare the big baseball diamond, etc. at least one time during the course of the season. That's all there is to it! We'll coordinate an overall field maintenance schedule, and work around your schedule to find a day/time where you can help make our ballpark sparkle!
6. Opening Day - Opening Day volunteers are responsible for arriving early to help set up for Opening Day, help serve lunch during Opening Day, or perform one of countless other tasks to help make WGLL Opening Day a day to remember.
7. Closing Day - Closing Day volunteers perform the same sort of tasks as Opening Day, and it's a great way to help the league cap off a memorable season for our childrent.
8. Team/League Sponsor - If you or your company provides a sponsorship to Willow Glen Little League, we want to thank you. League sponsorships are important part of our financial budget, and our league would not survive without them. As a special thank-you for sponsoring WGLL, you do not need to fulfill any other volunteer requirements (other than your snack shack duty!).
9. WGLL Board of Directors - The WGLL Board of Directors put in an incredible number of hours each year to help make the season a success. It is safe to say that our league would never get off the ground without the dedication of these special people. Our 2007 Board of Directors is full, but consider running for the 2008 Board of Directors (elections are held on Closing Day).
10. Saturday Afternoon BBQ - Got the itch to get behind the BBQ? Then this volunteer opportunity is for you! Spend 2-3 hours on a Saturday afternoon behind the BBQ and help fill the hungry stomachs around the park.
11. Saturday Afternoon Apparel Sales - Help man a table early in the season as we take order for our traditional WGLL T-shirts, sweatshirts, visors, etc. Shifts typically last 2-3 hours.
