YGTS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
The YGTS Athlete of the year commenced in the 1999/2000 season - the first season when we had more than one runner! The year incorporates the season ending year - hence Leon Burckhardt won YGTS athlete of the year for 1999/2000 but for simplicity we just use 2000.

Performances in both amateur and professional meets are important in determining the athlete of the year, but with more weighting to the professional results.

In 10 years, no athlete has won it twice. Alicia Wrench-Doody (2009) is the only female to have be awarded YGTS athlete of the year.

At some stage a suitable trophy will be arranged and offered retrospectively.

2000 Leon Burckhardt
(Wins: Mile End 70m, Mile End 200m, Barmera 70m) Leon's first season saw him immediately have an impact when he ran an eye catching 2nd in the 300m at Henley before winning the second double of his career at Mile End. He continued to have a string of solid performances with 4 finals over 400m in the VAL culminating with a close 3rd in the 400m at Stawell.

2001 Jason Neve
(Wins: Lobethal 300m, Plympton 400m). Baulchy was unlucky not to win a few more races and in between several final appearances was able to score at Lobethal and Plympton.

2002 Ben McLean
(Wins: Colley Reserve 70m, Bay Sheffield 120m Restricted, Camden Classic 400m, Bendigo 100m, Stawell 200m) The B-Mac scored the unique distinction of winning at 5 sacred venues for his 5 wins. Colley Reserve Glenelg, Adelaide Oval, Camden Oval, Bendigo and Stawell.

2003 Mark Faulkner
(Wins: Camden Mort Daly 120m, Mt Gambier 70m, Adelaide Oval 300m, Playford 120m Gift, Devonport 200m, Keilor Don Furness 70m, Keilor 120m Gift) Mark won the Mort Daly medal for SAAL's athlete of the year, the SAAL sprinter award & AAC sprinter of the year.

2004 Chris Burckhardt
(Wins: Camden Mort Daly 400m, Mt Gambier 70m, Mt Gambier 120m Gift, Bay Sheffield Invitation 400m) Chris qualified for the nationals with a PB of 47.91 in December 2003, beating Bay Sheff winner & World Junior's 400m runner Keith Sheehy. He was also an integral member of three club record relay teams.

2005 Hayden Cook
(Wins: Flinders 800m, Bay Sheffield 550m, Loxton A 1000m, Flagstaff Hill 550m) Hayden also won the State 800m title in a PB of 1-51.79 after breaking his PB in the Telstra A Series in February. Hayden was runner-up in the Mort Daly Medal - the SAAL athlete of the year. At Stawell he won the Bruce Walker trophy for the best performed middle distance runner after finishing 2nd in the 550m and 4th in the 800m.)

2006: Clay Watkins
(Wins Hallett Cove Novice 400m, Plympton 120m Gift, 120m Bay Sheffield)
After YGTS's most successful season to date, Clay Watkins is a worthy winner of the YGTS athlete of the year for 2005/2006. Clay kickstarted the season with a dominating performance, winning off the back mark in the novice 400m at Hallett Cove. The quality of the win was emphasised later in the season when 2nd placed Ben Koschade won the Camden Classic. He was 2nd in the Reynella Gift and from the extreme back mark of 1m ran a scintillating race to take 3rd in the Under 20's 300m. A solid 4th in the Mt Gambier Gift set him up for the next few weeks. He won the Plympton Gift in a 3 way photo before winning the Bay Sheffield in 11.94 off 8.0m. This was the 100th sash won by YGTS and of course the biggest race ever won by a member of the squad.

In between he continued to improve his 400m PB, twice running World Junior qualifying times including a club record 47.80secs. (Later broken by Duncan Tippins with 47.28). Clay was probably one race away from securing a spot in the World Junior's team. He wa a finalist in the Victorian 200m title and ran in the Invitation 400m at the Telstra Meet on the MCG.

Clay becomes the youngest ever winner of the YGTS Athlete of the Year.

2007: Michael Killicoat
(Wins: Plympton 1000m, Bay Sheffield 800m, Bay Sheffield 1600m Backmarkers, Flagstaff Hill 1600m, Pulteney 1600m)
For the second year in succession, Killa won the SAAL Middle Distance Athlete of the Year and finished 3rd in the SAAL's Mort Daly medal. He had a wonderful season where he finished on the dais on 10 occasions for 5 sashes, improving again from the year before. He closed out the season in PB shape at Stawell, running 3rd in the Backmarkers 1600m and a top 10 position in the prestigious Herb Hedemann.

2008: Duncan Tippins
(Wins: Reynella 120m Gift, Flinders 70m, 120m Pre-Bay Sheffield Gift, 120m Burnie Gift (TAS), 400m Camden Classic)
In one of the greatest all round seasons by an SAAL athlete, Duncan was the dominant SAAL sprinter of the 2007/08 season winning races from 70m to 400m. Dunc became the first SA athlete to win the prestigious Burnie Gift in Tasmania before becoming the first athlete to win the Camden Classic from a single digit handicap. His extraordinary and bold Camden Classic effort will live long in the memory of those who were priveleged to witness it. From the backmark, Dunc stormed through the first 200m in around 22s to take the lead with still 180m remaining. In the amateurs, Duncan smashed his personal best time in the 100m, 200m and 400m with 10.81, 21.51 and 46.62 respectively. His 400m PB occurred in front of a huge crowd at the Melbourne Athletics Grand Prix and is the current Western District club record. He broke 47s three times and was instrumental as the 2nd leg athlete in Western's 4 x 100m relay record of 41.78. Duncan made his second Bay Sheffield final in December before winning the 2008 Burnie Gift. Duncan won the sprinter of the year and was very unlucky not to be awarded the SAAL athlete of the year, missing by one vote.

2009: Alicia Wrench-Doody
(Wins: 120m Women's Bay Sheffield, 120m Women's Burnie Gift)
Little did we realise that when Alicia was preparing for a tilt at the Women's Bay Sheffield it would be the springboard to an extraordinary season that just seemed to get better as the weeks went by. Alicia kicked off the season with a couple of second places in races at Hallett Cove and Flinders. She started the shortest priced favourite in Women's Bay Sheffield history and duly saluted winning by over 3m in an emphatic performance. Four days later and Alicia entered the history books as the first winner of the Women's Bay Sheffield/Burnie Gift double. She joined Dean Capobianco and Craig Brown as the only athletes to ever win the double in the same season.

With her major pro running commitments out of the way, Alicia was back in the amateur arena and quickly made her mark winning a golden double over 100m & 200m in the SA state champs before winning a silver medal behind Sally McLellan in the 100m at the Queensland State titles. At the national titles Alicia confirmed herself as the number 3 sprinter in Australia with a bronze medal (100m) and silver medal (200m). Alicia was a member a of the Australian women's 4 x 100m relay team that ran a season's best 43.95s in Osaka Japan in May.

Alicia received two ASA awards - the female track athlete & sprinter of the year. Alicia's PB's of 11.66s and 23.62 broke the club records that had stood for over 25 years. Her 200m time is the third fastest in SA athletic history.

Alicia becomes the first female and 10th overall YGTS athlete of the year.
