Clay attempting to go where no man has gone before!

Clay Watkins will attempt to win the Camden Classic from the lowest mark the race has been won from. Former YGTS champ, Duncan Tippins created history in 2008 by becoming the only man to ever win Camden from a single digit handicap whhen he stormed around the field to win from 9m. Following a rehandicap for his 45.95 PB on Saturday in Canberra, Clay has the incredibly tough task of trying to win from 4m. Whilst the history of the event suggests it is an incredibly daunting task, Clay is looking forward to the challenge. YGTS has 12 athletes entered for the Camden Classic with James Boden (off 13m), Ira Thomson (18), Jordan Tronnolone (23) and Oliver Preston (24) probably our best chances to make the final. Chris Burckhardt (19) meets Clay in the last of the seven heats. In the Women's Claassic, Abbey Dunn (24), Bridgid Connolly (25), Lucy Buckley (41) and Emma Burckhardt (50) have all got chances of making the final from the four heats where first & second will progress to the final. In the 120m Gift & Skins, YGTs will be well represented by Robbie James, Dale Woodhams & Dylan Hicks. Watkins runs 45.95 for a Commonwealth Games B qualifier

CLAY Watkins ran a massive PB of 45.95 on Saturday in the 400m at the Australia Cup meet in Canberra. Clay finished in 2nd place behind the run away winner, Ben Offereins who ran a super time of 45.32. Clay's time was his first sub 46s run and smashes his previous PB of 46.43 set in Velenje in July.
On Wednesday Clay ran 21.12 PB, at the Adelaide Invitational at SANTOS stadium to record the fastest time ever by a SA athlete at the track. Clearly this set him up for the break through perofrmance in Canberra. Clay will now set his sights on the SA state 400m title on Friday night. At this stage he will either run the 200m state title or the Camden Classic on Sunday.
Running into a strong head wind Robbie James ran 11.03 for the 100m, just outside his 10.99 PB set in Brisbane last year. Robbie is yet to experience any favourable conditions for the 100m this season, but clearly when he does a PB will happen. Robbie won the 100m at the Invitational last Wednesday before finishing 3rd in the C race at the Australia Cup.
James Boden ran a commendable 1-51.43 in the 800m to record his first national qualifier this season. With several races lined up, Boden should run himself into decent 800m shape and look forward to a PB at the nationals in April. Boden became a last minute addition to the SA 4 x 100m team after the wihdrawl by Mark Ormrod. The team ran 41.65 to finish 6th.
Bridgid Connolly ran 12.73 in the C race at the Australia Cup before anchoring the ream home in the 4 x 100m relay.
AND in other news, Alicia Wrench-Doody enjoyed a return to the track with her first outing for two months with a run in the 2 x 200m relay at SANTOS on Saturday. Alicia should be ready to compete in an individual race some time later this month.

YGTS shine at Club Challenge

YGTS dominated the Club Challenge ensuring Western District won its fourth Club Challenge trophy since 2003. Opening up with a YGTS record of 41.30, the 4 x 100m team of Robbie James, Clay Watkins, Ira Thomson and Dale Woodhams smashed the old Westerns & YGTS record of 41.78, to kickstart Westerns campaign for another Challenge title. Clay Watkins ran a SANTOS stadium PB of 46.69 to win the 400m by a massive 4 seconds, while Robbie James won the 100m by 5m in 11.14 despite a 2.1mps head wind. Oliver Preston fought hard in the 3000m, Dylan Hicks provided vital points in the shot put and soon after the YGTS trio of Ira Thomson, Dale Woodhams and Jordan Tronnolone set up an unbeatable lead in the medley relay to ensure Westerns won the night. James Boden (running for TTG) won the 800m giving YGTS the track treble of the 100, 400 & 800. And Bridgid Connolly ran 3rd in the 100m before running a sensational 400m leg in the medley taking her club Pembroke from fourth to first and securing Pembroke its first ever Challenge title.

Bay Sheffield - Half a win and some exciting moments!

Plenty of runners among the prizemoney and in the hunt for a win but the only victory we had a hand in was the great performance of Lucy Buckley in the Women's 550m. Lucy came to YGTS soon after the Reynella meet earlier this month, in superb nick, courtesy of Gary Thompson and the Reynella crew. Always a delicate operation toi 'finish' off an athlete for a major race after the athlete had done the bulk of the work with another coach. Fortunately she was in such great racing shape, we were able to control the situation and assist Lucy to achieve her dream of a win at the Bay Sheffield carnival. Congrats to Lucy and well done to GT for preparing Lucy so well & being gracious in the acceptance of Lucy's situation.

The more home grown results were equally as exciting with the two Bay Sheffield hopes Robbie James & Dale Woodhams running superbly to finish 2nd & 3rd respectively behind the race surprise packet, Russell Scott. Robbie was brilliant in the final hitting the lead for the bulk of the race before a desperate effort by Scott metres from the finish, snared victory for the Luke Hilyard coached athlete. Dale showed he has come of age with a tremendous run, finishing just behind Robbie and edging out Alex Saliu for the important 3rd spot and a trip to the podium.

It was the 6th consecutive year, YGTS has had a Bay Sheffield finalist, with Robbie and Dale joining Clay Watkins (2), Duncan Tippins (2), Mark Faulkner & Leon Burckhardt as our other finalists, making it 8 from the last 8 years.

Other semi finalists were Clay Watkins, Seb Geers and the big shock heat winner - Ira Thomson who held out the more fancied interstaters Jakeman &  Shepherd in the first heat.

Bridgid Connolly demonstrated her much improved sprinting form with a terrific 5th in the Women's Bay Sheffield, again ensuring YGTS was represented in the women's premier sprint event. Bridgid was our 10th Women's Bay finalist since 2001.

Another race, YGTS has done well in the past, the 550m again threw up a strong YGTS presence with Oliver Preston, Jamnes Boden and Clay Watkins all making the final. Unfortunately alack of experience by Oliver might have cost him as he swept to the lead a long way out but as usual he guts it out to the finish holding on for 3rd with Boden rattling home for 4th. Unfortunately Clay did not run in the final due to illness.

Dylan Hicks ran well for 4th in the 70m Open, while Rhett Cook & Simon Thompson both enjoyed making a final at Colley Reserve in the Restricted 120m.

Nathan Batley ran superbly in the under 20's 120m only to run into national under age 200m medallist Michael Brusnahan having his first start off a generous 4.0m. Brusnahan is undoubtedly one of the super talented athletes coming through and hopefully his debut at the Bay Sheff won't be the last we see him in the League.

Overall the squad added another 5 placegetters to the list to date and another $4000 to the prizemoney collection with both Bridgid and Robbie passing the 2 grand mark for the season.

Four athletes will head over to Maryborough on New Year's Day - Bridgid Connolly, James Boden, Dale Woodhams & Ira Thomson.

Robbie is Back in Town Despite the Rig!

Robbie James returned to Gift winning form on the hallowed turf of Colley Reserve with a narrow victory in the Pre-Bay Colley Reserve Gift. Rob demonstrated he has emreged as aBay Sheff contender holding out Jarrad Dartnall & Russell Scott on the line with Alex Bubner finishing just behind. This was Rob's sixth win with YGTS and first for the current season. Oliver Preston returned to the winner's list after an indifferent effort at the All School's in Hobart, easily winning the 550m open - his first win in open company. Ollie had a set back early in ther season when he injured his back in a soccer mishap at school, but showed he had fully recovered as he powered to the line to win from Kostya Khusodhin. Dylan Hicks ran into the day's surprise packet of Amin Chehade, finishing 2nd in the 70m open. The big disappointment of the day was the disqualification of Bridgid Connolly in the women's 550m after she ran comfortably for 2nd place in her heat. Unfortunately the one steward who had the clearest view of the incident was not consulted and it appears the decision was made hastily withour proper due consideration given. However to finish the day YGTS won a thrilling 4 x 160m relay race beating McKinnon Parade with Dale Woodhams coming from 5m behind to storm to victory to maintain our unbeaten status in the SAAL relays this season. Our second team with special guest PJ Bosch finished last but more importantly 3rd to give YGTS 6 of the 9 placegetters in the 3 relays held so far.
