TP Golf Outing Supports Paul Schimanski Scholarship Fund

The Tall Paul Memorial Golf Outing solicits and accepts donations to support the Paul Schimanski Memorial Scholarship Fund. The entire net proceeds are contributed to the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for MUSKEGON COUNTY, a Michigan nonprofit corporation that administers the Scholarship Fund.   A copy of the agreement establishing the Scholarship Fund is attached. The organization has no relationship to the above FOUNDATION other than as a donor.

The Outing raises money through donations of cash and items of golf equipment (e.g., balls, bags, gloves, shirts, etc.). Donated items are given to participants as prizes or raffled.

Donations to the outing are not tax deductible as charitable contributions but may be considered as an advertising expense. However, contributions of cash or stock made directly to the Paul Schimanski Scholarship Fund at the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for MUSKEGON COUNTY are tax deductible. If the contribution is appreciated stock, the donor also avoids the capital gains tax. In addition, those of you lucky enough to live in Michigan may be eligible for tax credit of 50% of your donation.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a Muskegon County high school graduate who majors in Engineering at Michigan Tech University. The fund was established in 2000 by the Schimanski family. To find out how to make a direct donation click here.

    Paul Schimanski's Biography

    Tall Paul
Bill and Marilyn Schimanski established The Paul Schimanski Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of their son, Paul, who died in an automobile accident in 1999. Paul was born in Muskegon in 1963 and attended Mona Shores Schools. He graduated from Mona Shores High School in 1981. In 1985 he graduated with High Honors from Michigan Technological University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Paul also received a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1986. He was an avid golfer and hockey player. Paul was a Project Engineer with General Dynamics at the time of his death.

Paul valued the high quality of the education he received at Michigan Tech. This scholarship will afford others the opportunity to receive these same benefits.

    Tall Paul Golf Outing History

After Paul passed away, his friends decided to hold a golf outing in his memory. The Tall Paul Memorial Golf Outing was organized by Gregg McGahan, Alan Kranzo and Steve Herniman. The purpose of the outing was to raise money for the Paul Schimanski Memorial Scholarship Fund established in 2000 by the Schimanski family. The first outing was held in September, 2000, at the Grand View Golf Course in New Era, Michigan.

Sixty-eight of Paul’s friends participated as golfers along with six volunteers who served the food and ran the prize raffles. Donations were received from twelve businesses and nine individual sponsors. The outing earned $1400 that was donated to the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for MUSKEGON COUNTY that administers the Scholarship Fund.   The outing’s success prompted Paul’s friends to make it an annual affair.
