Federal Way rolls to city title with 19-7 win over Decatur

It wasn't the way Decatur High School wanted to celebrate its Homecoming, especially against crosstown rival Federal Way.
The Eagles football team rolled over Decatur Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 19-7, to claim the coveted Federal Way City Championship. The win over the Gators (2-7) completed a three-game sweep of the city schools by the Eagles (3-6) and extends Decatur's losing streak to seven games after starting the season 2-0.
It was Senior running back C.J. Green that again proved to be the difference maker for Federal Way. Green ended the night with 182 yards on the ground and both of the Eagles' touchdown. On the year, the 5-foot-10, 185 pounder has rushed for 918 yards and scored a total of 13 touchdowns. With one game remaining on Federal Way's schedule, Green will have a pretty good shot at rushing for over 1,000 yards for the second straight season. Last year, he gained over 1,200 yards.
The game ends both teams South Puget Sound League South Division seasons. Federal Way will host Kent-Meridian tomorrow night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium in an SPSL crossover game. Kent-Meridian is 0-9 and has been outscored 348-34 during the season. They have been shut out six times in nine games.
Decatur will take on Auburn Riverside tomorrow night at Auburn Memorial Stadium. Auburn Riverside finished the season 3-6 in the SPSL North and feature a pretty solid defense. The Ravens are allowing just 16.5 points a game, compared to the 26 points Decatur is giving up. Beamer (3-6) will take on Kentlake tomorrow nigh at French Field. Kentlake finished 3-6 in the North.
The matchups between North and South were decided last week by standings in the leagues. The top-three teams from both divisions advance to the state playoffs and the remaining teams play crossover games, except for the Thomas Jefferson Raiders, who finished 11th in the South. The North includes only 10 teams and the Raider coaching staff couldn't find another team with an open date on their schedule, ending their season after beating Beamer Thursday night.
Against Decatur, Federal took an early 6-0 lead on a pair of Robby Borden field goals in the first quarter. Borden connected from 30 and 41 yards. Green's first touchdown of the night came in the second quarter on a 30 yard run to give the Eagles a 12-0 lead entering halftime.
Decatur got on the board in the third quarter on a 2 yard touchdown run by sophomore fullback Darrius Harris to cut the lead to 12-7. But Green added a 1 yard touchdown run late in the third to finalize the score.
The Gators got 136 yards from senior running back Stephen Glover.

The Federal Way Eagles didn’t need any extra motivation. But it sure didn’t hurt.
Not only were the Eagles taking on cross-district Todd Beamer for the first time ever, but Friday night also marked Federal Way’s annual Homecoming game. An event that always brings out the fans and turns the on-field intensity up another couple notches.
That wasn’t a good combination for Beamer. The Eagles pounded the Titans, 47-20, at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The win improves Federal Way to 2-5 on the year and drops Beamer to 2-5. The victory also moves the Eagles to 2-0 in the chase for the Federal Way City Championship. Federal Way beat Jefferson earlier this season and will take on Decatur Oct. 29.
“The trophy is sitting at Decatur right now,” said Federal Way coach John Meagher. “We are hoping to bring it back. (The city championship) is one of our rallying cries.”
It was the C.J. Green show against Beamer. The Eagle running back finally got some room to run and racked up a career-high 240 yards on 30 carries. Green also tallied four touchdowns, giving him 10 on the season.
“It was nice,” Meagher said. “The guys up front got the job done and C.J ran the ball well.”
In total, Federal Way rushed for 370 on the ground. Fullback Victor Williams added 98 on 10 carries and a touchdown. That’s over half of the 700 yards the Eagles ran for in their previous six games combined.
The Federal Way defense was also impressive, as they pretty much have been the entire season. Beamer was held to just 41 total yards and ran just 28 plays from scrimmage through the first three quarters Friday night. During that same time, Federal Way ran 46 plays for 322 total yards.
“Our defense has played very well this whole year,” Meagher said. “But I was surprised how much we dominated.”
After a ragged first seven minutes of play by both teams, senior defensive back Roddell Razor got things rolling for the Eagles with his first of two interceptions of Beamer quarterback Cole Bixenman. Razor’s pick came after Beamer had prime field position at their own 27-yard line following a bad snap on a Federal Way punt.
Green then took the first play 56 yards for a touchdown through the middle of the Titan defense to make it 6-0 with 5:15 left in the first quarter. Things got worse from there for Beamer.
After another three-and-out by the Titans, Razor hauled in a 31-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Donny McConnaughey to make it 12-0. The 5-foot-8 Razor outjumped Beamer defensive back Fred Jones (6-2) for the ball. Green then tallied a 2-yard touchdown run and Razor returned his second interception of the game 40 yards with 3:47 left in the first half to make it 26-0.
Beamer got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when senior defensive tackle Cameron Gillespie picked off a pass on a trick play. Dominique Small scored on a 3-yard run to make it 26-7 heading into half time.
Following the halftime Homecoming festivities, Beamer’s Mike Waller returned the second-half kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. But the Eagles followed with a mythodical 15-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with Green’s third touchdown — a 20-yarder on fourth-and-four. The drive took eight minutes off the clock and pretty much put the game out of reach at 33-13.
“That was huge,” Meagher said. “The momentum had shifted to them and we instantly responded with a perfect drive. It was awesome.”
Beamer’s other score came on a 7-yard run from Chris English late in the fourth quarter. English was the Titans’ leading rusher with 34 yards.
The Eagles will host the Bethel Braves (6-1) Thursday night and Beamer will take on Rogers (3-4) Friday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
