SPARTANS SHUTOUT WEST A TO POST SECOND EVER PLAYOFF VICTORY
The Quigley Spartans beat the West Allegheny Indians 5-0 Monday night in the second round of the PIHL, Class ‘A’ Penguin Cup playoffs. The Spartan victory was only the second ever playoff win in school history, the first coming in 1994.
Quigley killed four penalties, including two 5 on 3 power plays in the first period. Shorthanded for much of the first period, the Spartan offense had trouble getting revved up and the period ended in a scoreless tie.
Quigley got its first goal at the 8:11 mark of the second period as Chris Cummings lifted a shot into West A goalie, Phil Sweet’s, upper body and watched as the puck rolled over his shoulder and into the net. It was poetic justice as Cummings scored his goal shorthanded.
Less than two minutes later, Matt Puntureri put Quigley on the board again as he lifted a shot over the outstretched blocker of the West A goaltender. The second period ended with a 2-0 Quigley lead.
The third period began as a tight checking contest with neither team wanting to make a mistake. Each player knew the next goal would be a huge one. At the 10:24 mark of the third period, Quigley struck again. Freshman Ken Lytle took a pass from John Bryner just inside the blue line, skated toward the net and beat Phil Sweet to score Quigley’s third goal and take the wind out of West Allegheny’s sails.
Lytle would score again at 4:24 and ice the game for Quigley. Matt Puntureri added his second goal of the game two minutes later and the Spartans had their first playoff victory since 1994.
Quigley goaltender, Luke Belsky, played a spectacular game posting 34 saves to secure the shutout. At one point in the second period, Belsky stopped West A cold on four consecutive shots from point blank.
Quigley moves on to the PIHL, Class ‘A’ semi-finals which will be played Monday, March 19th at Bladerunners – Warrendale. Time of the game will be announced.
QUIGLEY FRESHMAN INSURE SECOND PLACE FINISH
The Quigley Spartan Freshman team captured second place in the 9 team West Division last night with a 3-2 decision over Montour. Nathan Puntureri, Jake Belsky and Josh Druzak scored to lead the Spartans to the hard fought victory. The Freshmen compiled a 12-4 regular season record.
The Spartan Freshmen will participate in the Freshman Cup tournament in March. Details will be forthcoming as soon as they are available.
CONGRATULATIONS FRESHMAN ON A GREAT SEASON!!!
SPARTANS CAPTURE DIVISION TITLE
By virtue of their 14-0-1 current record, the Quigley Catholic Hockey team has not only secured a PIHL playoff berth, but has clinched the Class 'A', West Division title for the second straight season.
The Spartans received help last night, as Westmont-Hilltop defeated Quaker Valley 6-1. Going into last night's action, the Spartans magic number to clinch the Division title was 2 points. The Quaker Valley loss gives the Spartans that magic number and the Division championship.
The Division championship enables the Spartans to enjoy a first round bye in the upcoming playoffs. Prior to getting there, however, the Spartans have five tough regular season games remaining on their schedule.
PIHL president, Jeff Mauro, will be on hand at the Spartan's February 15th game to present the team with the Division Championship trophy.
CONGRATULATIONS SPARTANS AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR RUN FOR THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
