Statesmen Continue Excellence in Classroom

For the 7th straight year and 17th consecutive semester the LTC Baseball team carried a team GPA over a 3.0.  This semester the Statesmen finished with a 3.10 cumulative gpa.  Eight members posted gpa’s over a 3.5 including Cory Baker, David Bishop, Derek Grabner, Travis Issak and Adam Richart who finished with perfect 4.0’s for the spring semester.  Way to go Gentlemen.

Several Statesmen Garner Post-Season Awards

RHP Brent McNeil, who went 7-2 for the Statesmen in 2009 was named to the ALL-GRAC team. 
OF Shawn Ferguson was named ALL-GRAC and was runner-up for Conference Player of the Year.
SS Kevin Gillespie was named the ALL-GRAC and All Region XXIV teams

Ferguson Decides on Eastern Illinois

All-Conference Outfielder Shawn Ferguson has signed with Eastern Illinois University.  Fergie was not only ALL-GRAC but was runner-up Player of the Year after hitting a school record .476 in league play. He joins fellow Statesmen Brent McNeil, who signed in the fall, and Jake Samuels who was the starting 1st basemen for EIU this year.

Bishop inks with Pikesville College

Academic All-American Pitcher David Bishop has signed a letter of intent to continue his career at Pikesville College.  Pikesville College is located in Pikeville, KY is a member of the NAIA and competes in the Mid-South Conference.

Williams Chooses Lincoln Memorial University

Outfielder Deaun Williams has signed with Lincoln Memorial University located in Harrogate, Tennessee.  LMU competes at the NCAA II level and in the South Atlantic Conference.

Anderson Signs With Kentucky Wesleyan

Pitcher Jake Anderson has signed a letter of intent to play for the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan University.  KWU is located in Owensboro, Kentucky and compete at the NCAA II level in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Smith Signs With Delta State

After mulling over several offers, RHP Justin Smith has decided on Delta State in Cleveland, MS.  Delta is a D-II national power that has made 10 trips to the College World Series and 26 trips to the NCAA Tournament .

Richart Chooses Indiana State

Sophomore catcher Adam Richart has decided on Indiana State to continue his college career.  Richart was a 2 year started for the Statesmen, joins a resurging Indiana State team that finished with it's best record in 14 years,  and finished 2nd in the Missouri Valley.

Gillespie Signs with UNC-Charlotte

Shortstop Kevin Gillespie, an ALL GRAC and ALL REGION XXIV selection  has signed with National D-1 power UNC-Charlotte.  The  49'ers have made NCAA region tournament apperances in 2007 and 2008.

Bates Inks with Cleveland State

Pitcher Coty Bates has signed with Cleveland State.  The Ohio native chose to stay close to home and play for CSU.  The Vikings were recenlty elimitated from the Horizon League tournament in the semi-finals.

Schmidt Signs With IPFW

Closer Taylor Schmidt has signed a letter of intent to continue his career at IPFW.  IPFW is a D-1 school located in Fort Wayne, Indiana and recently joined the Summit Conference.

Klatka Inks With Southern Indiana

Pitcher Adam Klatka has signed with th University of Southern Indiana.  USI has made two straight trips to the NCAA D-II tournament including a World Series apperance in 2008.

Mirizzi Chooses School

Sophomore outfielder Steve Mirizzi has signed with Ouchita Baptist University.  OBU, located in Arkadelphia, AR, had spent the majority of the 2009 season ranked in the Top 20 and was a 2008 D-II World Series participant.

Two Statesmen Sign in Early Period

LHP Derek Grabner committed to Ball State joining former LTC standout Morgan Coombs.   Derek averaged over a strikeout an inning last season as the 1st option out of the pen for the Statesmen last year.  Grabner, an accomplished actor, was recently acepted into the prestegious School of Teatre and Fine Arts at Ball State for the 2009-2010 school year.

RHP Brent McNeil has signed a letter of intent to Eastern Illinois University.  McNeil worked his way into the starting rotation after spring trip and compiled a 4-2 record with a 1.75 era.  EIU is the current home of former Statesmen Jake Samuels and Chris Ulrey.

Statesmen Bow Out of Region Tourney

Wabash Valley 4-LTC 3

Adam Clark surrendered a couple early runs but settled in and pitched 4 2/3 strong innings. Adam Klatka came in and worked out of a 2nd and 3rd jam in 4th and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings giving way to Taylor Schmidt who blanked the Valley the rest of the way. 

SWIC 9-LTC 5

Ross Overstreet was solid going 5 1/3 innings of work exiting with a 5-2 LTC lead.  Several errors and some walks outta the pen caused the lead to elapse and ending the season for the Statesmen.

Pitching Jem Leads Statesmen to Round 1 Tourney Win

Brent McNeil was outstanding going all 9 innings for the complete game shutout win.  McNeil allowed only 2 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6.  The Statesmen bats were held in check managing only 1 hit off the bat of Travis Isaak, but woke up in the 9th.  Steve Mirizzi lead off the inning with a double, setting the stage for Jimmy Brenneman, who ripped the game winning single to plate Mirrizi.  The Statesmen take on Wabash Valley in secong round action on 5/5/09 at 7pm.

Ross Overstreet(5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 K) kept Vincennes at bay allowing LTC to battle back for the win in the bottom of the 9th.  Derek Grabner(2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K) and Taylor Schmidt(1 IP, 0 H, 0 R) were outstanding in relief.  With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th, Travis Isaak drew the 1 out walk, Tyler Schnebelt got on with an infield single, Adam Richart was hit by a pitch.  With the bases loaded, Zach Tanner(1-3, RS, 2 RBI, SF) delivered the game winning sac fly.  Colt Cattani was 4-4 with a RS and double to help the cause.

Coty Bates(3 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K) David Bishop(1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R 1 ER) and Mark Roberts(2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K) all pitched very well, but the Statesmen bats could only manage 5 hits, in route to the 4-2 loss.  Shawn Ferguson(2-3, RBI) and Steve Mirizi(1-3, RS, HR, RBI) were the offense.
Game 3
LTC 18-VU 3
The Statesemen bats finally woke up and errupted for 18 runs on 16 hits, including 6 home runs.  Adam Klatka(2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R) picked up the win in relief of Cory Baker(3 2/3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 K).  Josh Weninger(1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K) pitched a scoreless 7th, to lock seal the 7 inning run rule win.  Kevin Gillespie(3-3, 3 RS, 2B, 2-HR, 5 RBI), Shawn Ferguson(2-4, 3 RS, 2-HR, 3 RBI), Travis Isaak(3-5, 2 RS, 2-2B, HR, 4 RBI), Zack Tanner(2-4, RS) and Steve Mirizzi(2-5, 2 RS, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) were the leading hitters.

Brent McNeil(7 1/3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 8 K) worked around a swirling wind to hold at bay, to pick up his 6th win of the year.  Derek Grabner(1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 K) was oustanding in relief to seal the win.  Colt Cattani(2-5, 2 RS, 3 RBI), Travis Isaak(3-5, RS, 2B, 2 RBI) and Tyler Schnebelt(3-5, 2 RBI) were the leading hitters.

Adam Clark(7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K) was outstanding going the distance for the complete game shutout and picking up his 1st college win.  Jimmy Brenneman(1-3, 3B, RBI), Kevin Gillespie(2-3, RS, 2B, 2 RBI), Shawn Ferguson(1-4, 3B, 2 RBI), Colt Cattani(1-3, 3B, RBI), Adam Richart(1-3, RS, 2B, HBP) and Zach Tanner(2-4, RS) paced the Statesmen offense.

LTC 16-Olney 6
Justin Smith(4 1/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 K) battled around 5 hits and 2 BB to pick up his 5th win of the year.  Jake Anderson(2 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) contributed on the mound for LTC. Adam Klatka(1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th and pitched a scoreless 8th to secure the LTC win.  Jimmy Brenneman(2-4, 4 R, 2B, 3 RBI, SB), Shawn Ferguson(3-6, 2 RS, 2B, 3 RBI), Colt Cattani(1-3, 2 RS, RBI), Adam Richart(3-3, RS, 2 RBI) and Steve Mirizzi(3-5, 3 RS, 2-2B, RBI) lead the 14 hit attack.

Brent McNeil(9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 10 K) was in control the whole day, needing no help from the pen throwing the complete game shutout.  Jimmy Brenneman(2-4, RS, RBI, SB), Shawn Ferguson(3-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Zach Tanner(2-4, 2B), Colt Cattani(2-4, 2 RS, RBI) and Steve Mirizzi(1-3, 2 RS, 2-SB) were the leading hitters.
Game 2
LTC 7-Lake Land 3
Justin Smith(5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) worked around some errors to pick up the win for LTC.  Cory Baker(2/3 IP, 2K, 1 BB) pitched well in relief with Taylor Schmidt(1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R) working out of a basees loaded jam in the 6th and a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win.  Jimmy Brenneman(1-3, 2 RBI), Kevin Gillespie(3-4, 2 RS), Tyler Schnebelt(2-4, RS, 2-2B, RBI), Zach Tanner(2-3, RS, SF, RBI), Colt Cattani(2-4, RS, 2 RBI), and Steve Mirizzi(2-3, RS, RBI, SB) paced the Statesmen bats.

LTC 15-Lake Land 11
Derek Grabner(2/3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER) struggled early and left the bottom of the first inning with LTC trailing 5-3.  Ross Overstreet(4 1/3, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 9 K) worked around some errors to keep LTC in the game.  Jake Anderson(4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K) picked up the win in relief holding Lake Land scoreless for 3 innings, allowing LTC to chip away at the 10-5 deficit, eventually taking a 15-10 lead.  in the top of the 7th, with the score tied 10-10, Adam Richart(1-4, RS, GS, 4 RBI) provided the big blow hitting a Grand Slam to stake the Statesmen to a lead 14-10 lead they wouldnt relenquish. Jimmy Brenneman(1-2, 2B, 4 RS, 4 BB,  2 SB), Kevin Gillespie(3-4, RS, 3B, 4 RBI, SF, 2 SB), Travis Isaak(2-4, 2 RS, 2 BB), Zach Tanner(2-5, 2 RS, 2B, RBI) and Steve Mirizzi(2-3, 2 RS, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 SB) lead the 15 hit attack.

LTC Drops 2 of 3 To Logan

Game 1

Taylor Schmidt(2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K) picked up the win in relief.  Jake Anderson(5 2/3 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 K) struggled early but settled in to allow the Statesmen to battle back, and win it in the bottom of the 9th. Ross Overstreet( 2/3, 1 H, 0 R) and Cory Baker(2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 K) pitched well in relief of Anderson.  With the score tied 8-8 in the bottom of the 9th, Jimmy Brenneman(2-4, 3 R, RBI, 2 SB) lead off with a single, advanced to 2nd on a sac bunt by Travis Isaak(2-4, RS, 2B) and scored on consecutive wild pitches.  Kevin Gillespie(2-4, RS, 2-2B, 2 RBI), Zach Tanner(2-4, 2B) and Steve Mirizzi(2-4 RS, SB) helped pace the offense.

Logan 4-LTC 2
Derek Grabner(6 1/3, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 K) pitched well with Coty Bates(1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 K) comming in relief and keeping Logan in check the last two innings.  Jimmy Brenneman(1-3, RBI) and Tyler Schnebelt(1-3, 2B) were the leading hitters

Adam Clark( 5 1/3, 6 H, 0 R, 5 K, 0 BB) was outstanding leaving the game with the score tied 0-0.  Josh Weninger(2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER) took the loss for LTC.  For the 2nd consecutive game the Statesmen bats were held in check, this time, mustering on 3 hits in the game.  Kevin Gillespie(1-3) and Shawn Ferguson(2-3) had the only hits.

Derek Grabner(6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 5 K) pitched well but took the loss for LTC.  3 errors in the 6th inning led to all 6 Wabash runs.  Kevin Gillespie(2-5, 2B, RS), Tyler Schnnebelt(1-3, 2B, RBI) and Shawn Ferguson(1-1, BB) were the leading hitters.

LTC 6-Wabash Valley 2
Brent McNeil(8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 6 K) was in control thru 8 innings and picked up the win for LTC.  Taylor Schmidt worked a 1-2-3,  9th to seal the victory.  Jimmy Brenneman(2-3, RS, 2-3B, RBI), Kevin Gillespie(1-2, 3 RS, 2 BB, HBP), Jason Spencer(2-3, 2-2B, 4 RBI, 2-BB), Colt Cattani(2-5, 2B, RBI) and Deaun Williams(1-3, RS, SB, BB) paced the offense.

Josh Weninger(2 2/3 IP,  2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 K) picked up the win in relief of Adam Clark(5 1/3, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 5 K), with Taylor Schmidt(1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1K)  picking up his 3rd save of the year.  Kevin Gillespie(2-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Shawn Ferguson(3-5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI), Kyle Strom(2-2, 2 R, 2B) and Jason Spencer(2-4, R, HR, 5 RBI) were the leading hitters.

Statesmen take 2 of 3 from Kaskaskia

Game 1
Kaskaskia 8-LTC 5
Brent McNeil(5 1/3 IP, 14H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) took the loss for LTC with Ross Oversteet(2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K, 1 BB) pitching well in relief.  Shawn Ferguson(4-4, 4 RS, 2-2B), Jason Spencer(2-4, 2 RBI) and Steve Mirizzi(2-4, 2B) paced the offense. 
Game 2
LTC 9-Kaskaskia 8 (11 innings)Down 8-1 in the bottom of the 9th, the Statesmen staged a furious comeback to tie the score at 8-8, eventually winning it in the bottom of the 11th on a Kevin Gillespie(2-5, 2 RS) lead-off triple and game winning sac fly by Shawn Ferguson(1-5, 2 RS, RBI, SF).The comeback was started with walks to Kyle Strom and Tyler Schnebelt followed by a 3-run pinch-hit HR by Mark Roberts, making the score 8-4 with no outs.  With 2 outs, consecutive singles by Gillespie and Ferguson and a BB to Jason Spencer loaded the bases for LTC.  Setting the stage for Travis Isaak's (3-5, 3 rs, HR, 5 RBI) game tying Grand Slam.  In the top of the 11th with runners on 1st and 3rd and  2 outs, Cogan Keith helped keep the score tied with a diving stop for the third out.  Derek Grabner(6 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3K) struggled with command but Cory Baker(3 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K) and  Taylor Schmidt(1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R) were outstanding in relief for LTC.   
Game 3
LTC 6-Kaskaskia 3Justin Smith(7ip, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 K) went the distance for LTC to pick up the win.  Shawn Ferguson(2-3, 2B, RS, 3 RBI), Steve Mirizzi(2-3, RS, RBI) and Mark Roberts(2-3, RBI) paced the LTC bats. 
LTC returns to action this Wednesday versus SWIC in a doubleheader at Parker Field.  This will be a 1:30 start.

Brent McNeil(8 1/3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) was in control the whole game picking up his 2nd win of the year.  Josh Weninger(2/3 IP , 1 H, 1 K) closed out the win for LTC.  Jimmy Brenneman(4-5, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SB), Kevin Gillespie(3-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 4 SB), Kyle Kolat(2-4, 2 R) and Shawn Ferguson(2-5, R, RBI) led the offense.

Derek Grabner(7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) picked up his 2nd victory of the year with Cory Baker(1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, BB) pitching in relief.  Jimmy Brenneman(2-6, R, 3 RBI, 2 SB), Travis Isaak(4-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, 3-2B), Colt Cattani(4-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2B) and Shawn Ferguson(4-5, 2 R, RBI, SB) paced the Statesmen at the plate.

LTC 14-SIC 1 (5 innings, run rule)
Justin Smith(5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 4 BB) was oustanding, losing a no hitter in the bottom of the 5th, in route to the LTC win.  Shawn Ferguson(4-4, 2 R,  2 RBI, 2B, 3B, HR) hit for the cycle with Jimmy Brenneman(3-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI), Steve Mirizzi(2-3, R, RBI) Zach Tanner(2-4, R, RBI, 2B) and Kevin Gillespie(1-4, R, 3 RBI, HR) helping in the Statesmen win.

The Lincoln Trail Baseball team had 25 of its 33 players record a 3.0 or better GPA for the fall semester.  Special congratulations go out to: Adam Richart, Corey Baker, David Bishop, Nick Consigli, Derek Grabner and Travis Isaak who all recieved 4.0 gpa's.  Way to go men!!

Kohan, Bierman and Gerler Named NJCAA Academic All-Americans

Sophomores Pat Kohan, Trent Bierman and Zach Gerler have been named to the 2008 NJCAA Academic All-American Team.  All three carried a GPA above a 3.65 for their two years at LTC.  Kohan and Bierman have been named Distinguished All-Americans for carrying a GPA above a 3.8 for their two years at LTC.

Statesmen Baseball Continues to Excel in the Classroom

For the 5th year in a row,  the Lincoln Trail Baseball Team has been named to the NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.  The Statesmen finished 14th with a team GPA of 3.22.  The 2007 Team finished 4th and the 2006 team was named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.  The coaching staff would like to thank these young men for thier efforts and congratulate  them for this great achievment.

The LTC Baseball family would like to give a special salute to one of our own.  Former Statesmen,  Troy Jeffers, graduated from the Air Force Academy this May and has been commissioned to the Pentagon.  This is a great achiement and proves the value of a an LTC education.

They join Morgan Coombs(Ball State), Zach Gerler(Ausitin Peay), Ricky Marshall(Austin Peay), Chris Ulrey (Eastern Illinois), Bryan Earley (Illinois St) and Jake Samuels (Eastern Illinois).

All these young men have performed on the field as well as in the classroom.  They were twice named to the NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year, finishing 4th in 2007 and 14th in 2008, helping carry a team GPA of over 3.2 both years.  They were also members of the 2007 GRAC and Region XXIV Championship team.  The Staff and Administration of LTC are very pround of these young men and excited about thier futures.

Samuels Named NJCAA All-American

First Basemen Jake Samuels capped off an outstanding season, which saw him hit .457 for the year with 15 doubles, 4 triples and 5 home runs, by being named to the NJCAA All American team for 2008.  Jake is the 2nd Statesmen to receive this honor in the last 2 years, joining David Arnold who received the same recognition in 2006.

Two more Statesmen Sign

Pitcher Bryan Earley has signed to continue his baseball career at Illinois State University.

First baseman Jake Samuels commited to Eastern Illinois University.  Jake joins Statesmen centerfielder Chris Ulrey for the Pathers in 2008-09.  EIU captuted the 2008 OVC tournament title and will be playing in the NCAA Regionals.

Statesmen Finish Third in Region 24 Tournament

Linconl Trail dropped two games in the NJCAA Region XXIV to take third place.  After winning the 1st two games of the tourney the Statesmen lost 4-3 in 10 innings to Logan and was eliminated in the game to go back to the championship 10-8 to Rend Lake.

LTC 5-Kaskaskia 4

Morgan Coombs(7 1/3 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) picked up the win, with Brent McNeil(1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 K's) picking up the save in the opening round game.  Jake Samuels(3-5, RS, 2B), Brent McNeil(2-4, RS, RBI), Trent Bierman(1-3, RS, 2B, 2 RBI) and Shawn Ferguson(1-4, RS, HR, 2 RBI) were the leading hitters.

LTC 7-Rend Lake 6

Ricky Marshall(6 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 K's) picked up the win for LTC, with Scott Schnepp(3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) picking up the save to help the Statesmen advance to the championship round of the NJCAA Region 24 tournament.  Jeff Reinke(3-4, RS) , Zach  Gerler(2-4, RS, HR, 2 RBI), and Trent Bierman(2-4, RS) paced the offense.  Jake Samuels and Justin Smith chipped in with solo homers.

The Statesmen will take on John Logan this Monday at Rent-One ballpark in Marion, IL.  First pitch is 7pm.

LTC comes back to beat Southwestern Illinois

LTC 12-SWIC 9

The Statesmen were down 9-4 in the top of the 4th, but answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning cutting the SWIC lead to 9-8.  Jake Anderson (5ip, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K) came into the game in the top of the 5th and held SWIC scoreless the rest of the way, allowing LTC to plate 4 more runs in route to the 12-9 win.  Andy Betts (2 2/3 IP, 5 R, 3 ER) and Taylor Schmidt(1 1/3 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 K's) also saw time on the mound.  Jake Samuels (4-5, 3 RS, 3B, HR), Brent McNeil(2-5, RS, 2 RBI), Zach Gerler (2-5, RS, 2-3B, 2 RBI) and Tyler Reboulet (2-4, 2 RS, RBI) were the leading hitters for LTC.

The Statesmen travel to Belleville, IL for a DH versus SWIC on Saturday, and travel to Olney Central on Sunday for the final GRAC DH of the year.

The Statesmen bats exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits to take game one.  Morgan Coombs (5ip, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) picked up his 5 win of the year.  Travis Capps (2-4, 2 RS, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), Adam Richart (2-4, 2 RS, HR, RBI), Shawn Ferguson (4-4, 2 2B, RS, RBI) and Justin Smith(2-2, RS, 2B, 2 RBI) were the leading hitters.

The LTC bats picked up where they left off pounded out 12 hits leading to the 15 runs.  Brent McNeil (5 ip, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K's) provided another solid pitching performance to pick up his 4th win of the year.  Jake Samuels (1-2, RS, 2B, 2 BB, RBI), Brent McNeil(1-3, 2 RS, 2 RBI), Shawn Ferguson(3-4, 2 RS, 2B, 3B, RBI), Zach Gerler (2-3, 3B, 3 RBI) and Tyler Reboulet (2-3, 2 RS, RBI) lead the offensive attack.

Jake Anderson (2 ip, 2 r, 0 er, 2 k) and Andy Betts (2 ip, 0 R) pitched well in relief.  The LTC bats were paced by Jake Samuels (2-4) with Trent Bierman (1-4, RS) and Shawn Ferguson (1-4, RBI) chipping in.

First inning errors lead to 4 unearned runs for Cody Bates(2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 ER) with Justin Smith(3 IP, 0 H, 2 K's) and Scott Schnepp(1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, K) pitching in relief, and Statemen bats managed just 4 hit.  Travis Capp, Zach Gerler, Steve Mirizzi and Jake Samuels each tallied a hit

Ricky Marshall (5 1/3 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 K's) left with a 10-2 LTC lead only to see Sinclair score 9 runs in the sixth to take an 11-10 lead.  The Satesmen scored 3 in the bottom of the 6th to take a 13-11 lead.  Morgan Coombs (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 3 K's) pitched around 3 LTC errors to pick up the win.  Chris Ulrey (2-3, 2B, 2 RS, RBI), Shawn Ferguson (2-4, 3 RS, 3 RBI), Jake Samuels (2-3, 3B, RS, 4 RBI), Travis Capps (2-3, 2B, RS, RBI), Trent Bierman (1-3, 3B, RS, RBI) and Zach Geler (1-4, RS, 2 RBI) lead the offensive attack.

LTC 8-Sinclair 1

The LTC bats exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st, and Brent McNeil (7 IP, 4 H, 1 RS, 0 ER, 6 K's) kept the Sinclair bats in check to pick up the complete game victory.  Shawn Ferguson (2-4, 2 RS, RBI), Travis Capps (2-4, RS), Chris Ulrey (1-3, 3B, RS, 2 RBI, SB), Pat Kohan (1-2, RS, RBI, SB), Zach Gerler (1-2, RS, RBI, 2 SB) and Adam Richart (1-4, RS, HR, 3 RBI) were the leading hitters.

The Statesmen host Vincennes on 3/26/08 at Parker Field with 1st pitch slated for 1pm.  LTC will travel to Decatur, GA to take on Young Harris in a 3 game series this Friday.

Rend Lake 4-LTC 3

Bryan Earley(6 1/3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 8K's) pitched well and left with a 3-1 lead in the 7th, only to see Rend Lake plate 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to pick up the win.  Brent McNeil(1-3, 2B, rbi), Shawn Ferguson(2-3) and Zach Gerler(1-2, rs, rbi) were the leading hitters.

Sophomore Brian Earley picked up his 1st win of the year going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, scattering 8 hits, while striking out 5.  Derek Grabner was very good in relief allowing just 1 hit and no runs, striking out 5 in 3 innings of work.  Morgan Coombs picked up his 1st save of the year striking out both batters he faced in the 9th.  Trent Bierman (3-4, 2 rs, hr, RBI), Justin Smith (2-5, 2-2B, RBI) and Jeff Reinke (1-4, rs, hbp) paced the offense.  

WVC 5-LTC 3

Zack Gerler's 2 out double in the bottom of the 11th plated Jordan Foster for the game winning run.  Ricky Marshall (4 2/3 ip, 3 h, 3 r, 0 er, 2 k's) pitched well in his 2nd start of the year, with Morgan Coombs (6 2/3 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 4 k's)  working big innings out of the pen to pick up the win.  Chris Ulrey (3-4, rs, 2B), Adam Richart (1-4, 2 RBI's), Steve Mirizzi (0-2, 2 rs, 3 BB) and Tyler Schnebelt (1-3) were the leading hitters.

Spring Trip Update

Gulf Coast 11-LTC 1

LTC pitchers allowed 11 runs, 7 earned on 8 hits in the season opener.  Bryan Earley (3 ip, 5 r, 3 er), Brent McNeil (2 ip, 2 r, 2 er) and Derek Grabner (1ip, 4 r, 2 er) were the pitchers of record.  Chris Ulrey (1-3, rs, bb), Steve Mirizzi (1-2, sb, bb) and Jordan Foster (1-3, 2B) were the leading hitters.

Gulf Coast 8-LTC 7

LTC took a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the 9th but were denied the victory when a 2-out, 2 rbi double allowed the winning run to cross the plate and secure the Gulf Coast win.  Scott Schnepp (3 1/13 IP, 1 h, 0 r) pitched well in relief of Ricky Marshall (3 1/3 ip, 4 h, 6 r, 5 er) and gave the Statesmen a chance to take a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the 9th.  Morgan Coombs (1 2/3 ip, 2 rs, 2 er) took the loss for LTC.  Jeff Reinke (2-4, rs, 2b, rbi), Chris Ulrey (2-4, rs, hr, 2 rbi), Justin Smith (3-4, rs, rbi) and Trent Bierman (3-5, rs) led the offense.

Iowa Central 6-LTC 0

The LTC bats managed just 4 hits and no runs in route to the loss.  Coty Bates(5ip, 5 r, 5 er, 5 k's) settled in after a shaky 1st inning where 4 IWC runs crossed the plate allowing 1 run and 1 hit in the next 4 innings.  Deaun Williams (1-3, 2b) Jeff Reinke (1-2, 2b) and Shawn Ferguson (1-2, sb) paced the offense.

LTC 14-Kankakee 3

Greg Harrington(5ip, 3rs, 1 er, 5k's) picked up the win on the mound for LTC, with Taylor Schmidt(1ip, 0 h, 0 r, 2 k's) pitching well in relief.  Jake Samuels (3-4, 3 rs, 3 rbi, hr), Shawn Ferguson (2-3, rs, rbi), Zach Gerler (2-4, 2 rs, 2 rbi, hr) and Travis Capps (1-4, 2b, 3 rbi) were the leading hitters

Derek Grabner (4 2/3 ip, 4 h, 2 r, 2 er, 4 k's) and Andy Betts (2ip, 1 h, 1 r, 0 er) pitched well in relief of Jake Anderson, who spotted Kankakee and 6-0 lead in the 1st inning.  Chris Ulrey (2-2, 3b), Andrew Mosbarger (1-1, rs), Travis Capps (2-3) and Adam Richart (1-3) led the offense

Danville 4-LTC 2

Brent McNeil (4 ip, 4 r, 2 er) took the loss for the Statesmen, with Morgan Coombs (3 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 4 k's) pitching well in relief.  Zach Gerler (2-2, 2 2B, rs), Jordan Foster (2-3) and Justin Smith (1-3, 2b) were the leading hitters.

Three Statesmen Sign

Three Sophomores signed at Division I schools during the early signing period. 

Righty pitcher Ricky Marshall signed with Austin Peay University.  Marshall averaged a strikeout an inning last year with a 2-1 record.  Austin Peay advanced to the NCAA regionals last year and joins former Statesmen Brooks Hunton.

Morgan Coombs-RHP signed with Ball State.  Morgan was an All-Region XXIV Tournament performer and served as the closer for LTC last year finishing with a 5-2 records with 7 saves.

Chris Ulrey signed with Eastern Illinois University.  Ulrey lead the Statemen with 10 homeruns last year along with 15-2B and 6-3B, and committed just 2 errors in CF.

Baseball Honored Again for Work in Classroom

Baseball finishes 4th in the country for team GPA.  The 2006-07 LTC Baseball team had some big shoes to fill in the classroom, after the the 05-06 team was named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year; they did just fine, achieving a team gpa of 3.29.  26 out of 30 players had gpa's of 3.0 or higher, they are: Andy Betts, Michael Manus, Brendon Smith, Michael Lucas, Bryan Early, Craig Bunten, Riley Tincher, Morgan Coombs, Nick Lacy, Pat Kohan, Brooks Hunton, Ricky Marshall, Trent Bierman, Adam Klatka, Corey Fagg, Ty Ethington, Kevin Gillespie, Travis Capps, Josh Hillyard, Zach Gerler, John Schlichter, Tyler Rehmel, Devin Taylor, Jeff Reinke and Chris Ulrey.  Way to go men

Game 1
LTC 12-Southwestern Illinois 2
Michael Manus(6 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 K's) and Morgan Coombs(2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K) combined to no hit the Blue Storm, in route to the opening round 12-2 LTC victory.
The offense was paced by: Brooks Hunton (4-5, 2B, RS, 3 RBI), John Schlichter (2-2, 2 RS, 2B, RBI), Chris Ulrey (2-5, 2 RS, 2B, RBI), Devin Taylor (1-3, RS, RBI), Travis Capps (2-4, RBI) and Zach Gerler (2-3, 2 RS, 2B, HR, 3 RBI)

Game 2
LTC 4-Wabash Valley 2
Michael Lucas (8 IP, 6 H, 2 RS, 2ER) picked up the win, with Morgan Coombs (1 IP, 0H, 2 K's) getting the save. Kevin Gillespie (1-2, RBI), Chris Ulrey (1-2, RS, HR, 2 RBI) and Jake Samuels (1-3, RBI) were the leading hitters.

Game 3
LTC 6-Olney Central 4
Bryan Earley (6 1/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 K's) got the start pitching leaving in the 6th with LTC trailing 4-0. Ty Ethington (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K) held OCC in check to set the stage for the 6-4 comeback victory. Morgan Coombs picked up his second win of the tourney going the final inning and a 1/3 of hitless baseball. The bats were lead by: John Schlichter (1-3, RBI), Jake Samuels (1-3, 2 RS), Devin Taylor (1-2, RS) and Travis Capps (1-3 RS). Tyler Rehmel and Kevin Gillespie pitched in with RBI singles in the 7th.

Game 4
John Logan 12-LTC 10
Brendon Smith (4 IP, 3 H, 4 RS, 2 ER) got the start and left the game with a 4-3 lead. Kyle Switalski (1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 K's), Ty Ethington(2 1/3, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER), Ricky Marshall(2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 RS) and Morgan Coombs(2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K's) also pitched in the 12-10, 11 inning loss. The leading hitters were: Kevin Gillespie (2-5, 2 RS), Tyler Rehmel (3-4, 2 RS, RBI), Chris Ulrey (2-6, RS, GS HR, 4 RBI) and Trent Bierman (2-3, 3 RBI)

Game 5
LTC 4-John Logan 3
Robbie Reeves (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K's) got the start and pitched well, leaving the game with a 3-1 deficit. Michael Manus (4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K's) entered the game in relief of Reeves and was outstanding, blanking the Logan bats for the final 4 frames. LTC trailed 3-1 until the 9th when; Gillespie lead off with a walk, and Schlichter followed with a 1 out single, setting the stage for Brooks Hunton. Hunton drilled a fastball down the right field line for a double scoring both Schlichter and pinch runner Jeff Reinke to seal the victory and secure LTC's 2nd Region XXIV title in 3 years.

Former Statesmen Get 's Call to the Big Leagues

Former Statesmen Kevin Mahar has been called up to the Texas Rangers from the Oklahoma Red Hawks, the Triple A farm team. Mahar was an All-GRAC and All Region outfielder for the Statesmen in 2002. We will be posting more information on Kevin's play in future weeks.

Former Statesmen Taken in MLB Draft

TJ Brewer was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 35th round of the MLB Draft. TJ was the winning pitcher in LTC's 2005 Region XXIV Championship. He signed with Arkansas State and was named 1st Team All-Sunbelt in 2007.

Former Statesmen Signs Contract With Astros

Former Statesmen Tyler Evans spent just 2 weeks in Independant Frontier Baseball League, before the Houston Astros inked him to a Free-Agent contract. Tyler played in 17 games with the Florence Freedom before reporting the the Lexington Legends a minor league affiliate of Houston. Congrats Tyler, you earned it.

The remaining six sophomores from the 07 team have signed scholorships to continue thier baseball careers.

They join Ty Ethington(Lipscomb), Michael Lucas(Ball St), Michael Manus(Indiana St), John Schlichter(Illinois) and Brendon Smith(Indiana St) who signed in the fall. Congratulations go out to all these men who won 2 GRAC conference titles and a Region 24 title during thier time at LTC.

Since 2002, 49 players have signed with D-I schools.
