Elkland, PA – There will be a new team name this season in the 2008 ESA Fastpitch League, as “Hackett’s Cubs” will debut in May. Seeking sponsorship, HackettBaseball website creator Bruce Hackett decided to sponsor the team himself this season rather than go to a local business. Hackett will serve as a player/sponsor of the team, while nephew Justin Cevette will serve as the player/manager. Hackett’s Cubs will feature many players from last years Foghorns team that played in the ESA League. Last season the Foghorns squad posted a 12-7 overall record, including a 10-6 record in the ESA league. League players returning to the team include: Bruce Hackett, Justin Cevette, Cody Orchowski, Ben Geist, Mike Wells, and Joe Cevette. Perhaps the most notable addition to the team this year will be pitcher Sherri Thompson. Thompson, a sophomore at St. Bonaventure was a Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection last year, while throwing 109.1 innings and totaling a 1.15 ERA for the season. Thompson, out of eligibility to play with local summer women’s leagues, decided to give the men’s game a chance in order to stay polished as a hurler over the summer. Other new additions to the team include: Jim Bentley, and Anthony Costelic. It is unknown at this time if last season’s pitcher Grant Sherman will return. Sherman threw every single league game last season. If he does return Sherman will have help on the mound and may be allowed to return catching, a position he normally holds when playing. With nine current players on its roster, the team is looking for one to two more players to complete its roster for the 2008 season.
