E-Waste
E-Waste
For the first time ever, the City of Ada is offering an "E-waste" collection opportunity during its annual "Household Hazardous Waste Collection" event in October. E-waste is a term used to describe old or unwanted computer and electronic devices such as monitors, copiers, and cell phones.

Businesses, industries, schools, etc. will be able to drop off all types of unwanted, salvaged and surplus E-waste during the week of October 17 through 22.

During this week, items can be dropped off at the Recycling Center located in the I.C.O.N. Center at 300 East Arlington from 6 am to 2 pm Monday thru Friday. (Please call Trudy at 436-8100 in advance) In addition, E-waste can be dropped off during the HHW event on Saturday, October 22 from 9 am to 2 pm in the Norris Field parking lot at 14th and Stadium.

The following is a partial list of E-waste items that will be accepted: Computers, Monitors, Printers, Fax Machines, Copiers, Scanners, Plotters, Peripherals, Telecommunications equipment, Phone Systems, Security Equipment, Medical Equipment, UPS Systems, Cell phones, VCRs, Toner, Inkjet Cartridges, and much, much more.

The HHW event scheduled on Saturday, October 22 (from 9 am to 2 pm) is for area residents only. However, businesses may still drop off E-waste during the event.

Watch for upcoming details for more information. If you have any questions, please let me know, and I'll be happy to assist.

A Letter from the Chairman
Smith 2005
Garmon Smith, ARC Chairman
The Ada Recycling Coalition (ARC) would like to remind Ada area residents that the City of Ada is providing for its citizens a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on Saturday, October 22 from 9 am to 2 pm in the ECU football field parking lot. For the first time in our community the event will include the collection of Electronic Wastes such as computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, and the like.

This is a very beneficial event that is being offered to the public. It allows residents to get rid of unwanted or accumulated household hazardous waste safely and conveniently. ARC will be collecting latex (water-based) paints from the public during this event and then mixing it and donating it for re-use. This paint will be made available to non-profit organizations for their use in the community.

The following is a list of items that will be accepted: acids, antifreeze, asbestos, batteries, brake fluid, bleach, chlorine, fertilizer, gasoline, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lead, mercury, moth balls, naphthas, oven cleaner, paints (latex and oil based), paint thinners and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals, swimming
pool chemicals, rodent killer, window cleaners, spot removers, wood preservatives, engine
batteries, rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, passenger tires, thermostats, used motor oil, and for the first time, “e-waste” (computers, monitors, fax machines, toner cartridges, etc.).

Ada citizens are encouraged to check their garages, basements, storage cabinets and other storage areas for hazardous materials that may have outlived their useful life, or have been stored for an extended period of time such that the containers are deteriorated or not safe to handle any longer. Please notify your family members and friends of this great opportunity to do something for the environment of our community.

Sincerely,
Garmon Smith, ARC Chairman

Mayor Proclaims Household Hazardous Waste Day
HHW Proclamation 2004

Been wondering what to do with those buckets of paint or dead batteries in the garage?

The city of Ada and Ada Recycling Coalition (ARC) are holding the fifth Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm at East Central University’s Norris Field on Stadium Drive. Area residents are encouraged to drop off all household hazardous wastes free of charge. The city of Ada provides this service to residents once a year.

“The purpose of this event is to help people get rid of household hazardous wastes,” said City Engineer David Hendricks. “These are items that are not supposed to be placed in the trash. This service gives people an avenue to discard these hazardous materials. It also benefits the city by keeping these dangerous materials out of the landfill, and minimizes possible injuries to employees.”

Common household hazardous wastes that will be discarded at the event are acids, antifreeze, asbestos, batteries, brake fluid, bleach, chlorine, fertilizer, gasoline, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lead, mercury, moth balls, naphthas, oven cleaner, paints, paint thinners and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals, swimming pool chemicals, rodent killer, window cleaners, spot removers, wood preservatives, engine batteries, rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, passenger tires, thermostats and used motor oil.

Hendricks said last year’s event was a success. “We had nearly 250 vehicles drop off materials,” he said. According to reports, last year 115 pounds of alkaline batteries, 279 tires, 89 car batteries and 54 rechargeable batteries were discarded.

Hendricks said disposing of household hazardous wastes is a step-by-step process. “The collection is divided into different staging areas, depending on what type of product it is,” he said.

Once the waste is discarded by the individual, the city of Ada hires trained contractors to pack away the materials and discard them in the proper manner.

“Once these materials are collected by the contractor they are either recycled, and quite a bit of it is incinerated,” he said. Last year, 90 percent of the materials were incinerated.

Hendricks said ARC will collect latex paint, mix it and donate it to non-profit organizations.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste per year. The average home can accumulate as much as 100 pounds of household hazardous waste in the basement or garage and in storage closets. When improperly disposed of, household hazardous waste can create a potential risk to people and the environment.

During the 1980s, many communities across the United States began special collection or permanent collection sites for handling household hazardous waste. More than 3,000 collection programs have been undertaken in the United States. (Story by Jeremy Cantrell)

Do Not set out for regular garbage service
The City of Ada held its third local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)Collection Day on Saturday, May 5 in the ECU Norris Field parking lot. Citizens were asked to drop off their unwanted wastes, such as: paints, herbicides, chemicals, pesticides, batteries, tires, oils, etc. that cannot be disposed of with their regular household trash.

The Ada Recycling Coalition (ARC) has worked with the City of Ada all three years by manning, collecting and re-mixing latex paint and donating cans of paint to organizations that were able to put them to good use.
